Promotional/LEGO Store Grand Opening Set, 2009
    More details...
    ©2009 LEGO Group

Since 2008, new Lego Brand Stores have celebrated their opening with exclusive in-store sets that have typically been limited to the first 300 customers (sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less) who have spent at least US$35 (or the local equivalent) in the store on the opening day. As you can imagine, these are pretty rare sets. They are usually modelled on something of local interest, which means some of the subjects are a little obscure to non-residents.

These sets are usually provided in a zip-lock bag with colour photocopied (or inkjet printed) instructions, with the obvious exception being the 'Big Apple' poly-bagged set from earlier this year that was used as the opening day set for the New York city store. According to our research, there have been 28 of them released since 2008 (and an additional one released way back in 1992).

Today we've added to the database all the 'Grand Opening' sets that we've been able to track down. If you know of any others, please let us know. It looks like we'll need to update this list quite frequently with the new stores expected to open in the coming months!

How about instructions for these? I can start it off by scanning the Sacramento instructions if you would like.

You can find the set for the Troy Michigan store that just opened here http://www.flickr.com/photos/reasonablyclever/sets/72157624865263569/with/5004695355/

@Griff (and 'rcritterbug' who emailed this news in) - thanks for the reminder; Chris "Reasonably Clever" Doyle had emailed us about that a couple of days ago & I'd promptly forgotten about it. Now added to the database.

Excellent addition to the database! I have seen a lot of these sets before but not all of them. I am lucky enough to own sets of the stores that opened up in NY this year! Lucky because that means there are finally stores near me to shop at. The Brick Apple is a great set and the core of the apple can be removed! The train from the Queens Store is a beautiful little train car and the plane from the Garden City store is a great design. Great sets in all.

Thanks for this added info bluemoose! Another reason to visit Brickset daily, as if I didn't have enough already!

re: Instructions - we don't host any official instructions here on Brickset, we just provide links to those hosted elsewhere (i.e. Lego for newer sets & Peeron for older sets). I'll have a chat with Huw about the options. In the meantime, if you would like to email us links to high-res scans of the instructions, that would be great. We can't promise that we can do anything with them, but we'll look into it. Thanks.

to all: regarding instructions: yes, yes. Please provide scans. At first maybe put them on Brickshelf, maybe they can later be moved to another location. There are some good models to make.

I heard the Brick Apple set was still on sale to this day in the NYC store? (i.e. it wasn't just an opening exclusive). Can anyone confirm?

Posted by vynsane in United States, 27 Sep 2010 11:20

Yes, the 'Brick Apple' was still on sale at the NYC store the last time I was there (which was early September) - can't say for sure as to "to this day" but I'd venture it's still there. Unlike other Grand Opening sets, it's poly-bagged (like the promo sets), not in a ziplock bag.

Thanks for adding the Grand Opening Exclusives to the database! I think I asked about this a while ago (I'm sure I'm not the only one...) Now to write a review of the Spirit of St. Louis!

As far as instructions go, it seems to be a touchy subject. Since most of the sets come in a ziplock bag, the only REAL 'exclusive' part becomes the instruction sheet - the pieces are rather standard fare, nothing exclusive about them. That said, I'm relatively sure you can find some on flickr.

@ renesisx....I picked up the Brick Apple at the Rockefeller shop about 2 weeks back.
I also have scans of the Queens Center Mall Train Set plus the Brick Apple instructions too.

Is there a listing on Brickset for the exclusive Duplo blocks that are given out at these events?

Posted by pandax in United States, 27 Sep 2010 14:26

Brick Apple set is still available in Rockefeller store at $9.99. I got one last Sat.

Anyone on Brickset know if there's a listing (I couldn't find it on this site)for all the Duplo blocks given out at these Grand Opening or any other givaways...ie: like the blocks with R2-D2 on it, LegoClub Max, Buzzlightyear, etc.?

Posted by miskox in Slovenia, 29 Sep 2010 06:15

@legodad42: try this http://www.bricklink.com/catalogList.asp?catType=P&catID=506
and this (probably outdated): http://www.lugnet.com/duplo/~250/promobricks
And thanks for the instructions.

Posted by legoDad42 in United States, 30 Sep 2010 09:30

@miskox...THANKS! Appreciate the link. Some of the promotional bricks I got at the Rockefeller and Queens store Grand Openings are going for like anywhere from $2-$3.00 dollars on up to like $30.00 each according to BrickLink's Price Guide. Wow!

You're welcome on the instructions. My pleasure.

Thanks bluemoose for adding these. I've managed to build most of them - the instructions for a lot of them are out on the web, but hard to find. Any chance they could be sorted by {city name | date of opening }?

@toplessjeep: I'd love some images of the Newark Cargo Plane, and/or link to instructions. Thank you.

Minor date corrections:

King of Prussia opened 10/2008

Annaopolis opened 6/2009
Cincinnati opened 6/2009
Orland Park opened 9/2009
Hanover opened 11/2009

@cmrt1014: can you post links to instructions please. I am not able to find them. Thanks.

Posted by cmrt1014 in United States, 01 Oct 2010 23:41

@miskox: Did you search flickr and brickshelf (try ash-274) and eurobricks? Any particular one that you are looking for?

Good luck!

Does anyone have an image of the back of the Wissbaden castle? Instructions? I see that there are two people who own the set... Help!!
