We're hearing that Harry Potter sets are now being shipped by LEGOshop.com and are indeed showing as 'available now' in the UK, a few days earler than their October 1st release date.

However, it may be worth holding off ordering them just yet as we're also hearing that during October LEGO is offering double VIP points online and in-store, which is effectively a 10% discount. Perfect -- that's just in time for the release of Tower Bridge!

Do you have the new Harry Potter sets? If so, let us know what you think by writing some reviews. Are they good value for money? I've had them for a while. I haven't yet built Hogwarts or Hagrid's hut but my verdict on the others is to buy them all but Hogwart's Express: They are expensive but the figs are excellent and the sets have a decent selection of pieces, particularly The Burrow.

Hogwart's Express has excellent figures but the train itself is atrocious: it's a very lazy design. The loco looks good above the solebar but the wheelsets are totally wrong and make the finshed model look like a cross between a steam train and a diesel. Why they didn't use the new large train wheels, I don't know. Maybe the target audience won't notice or care, but with a little extra effort it could have been superb: on a par with Emerald Night. A wasted opportunity...

With the LEGO double VIP points, Argos, Toys R Us sales and the LEGO fayre in Swindon this weekend, October is going to be a very expensive month, but worth it :-). Can't wait.

Posted by Spindarren in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 08:28

Damn!! and i just put in a £100 order to the online store, oh well no double VIP points for me! lol

Posted by mysterygoo in United States, 28 Sep 2010 08:44

Is it possible to add a brick database as well and make links to bricklink for that piece?

Posted by DrDaveWatford in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 09:24

Huw, aside from the valid point about the poor design of the Hogwart's Express (I fully agree that Emerald Night wheels or even the red wheels from the Toy Story 3 train should have been used), will it actually sit on standard rails and move along them without derailing ?

Posted by Captain Blockbeard in United States, 28 Sep 2010 10:21

I haven't ordered the new Harry Potter Legos yet but look forward to eventually getting The Burrow. (The review of it on Eurobricks certainly helped convince me.) That double VIP points in October sounds enticing, especially with the arrival of the Winter Bakery on Lego S@H on October 1st.

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 10:36

Funny you should say that about Hogwarts Express Huw, my husband bought it and put it together. I like the mini's and the owls. Love the paint job on the owls, but I am not too fond of the train. I thought it should have had another train car. And where's Hermoine? She should have been in it. We ordered our sets on S@H. They shipped ours early. We received them on Saturday via FedEx. As for double points, I wish we had waited but what is done is done. I plan on going to the grand opening of the Phoenix Legostore next month and will rack up those double points!!!!

Posted by vman100 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 11:01

Starfire - we also got ours through pre-order - I was talking with the manager at our lego store and she said we could just buy them in store using our coupons, double points etc in October, then return them using the shop at home packing receipt. Just a thought.

Posted by Zuma in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 11:06

Double VIP points in October would be most welcome! I delayed buying the UCS Imperial Shuttle until October to save shipping costs from S@H, and am glad I did. Looking forward also to the Tower Bridge and the Winter bakery, not looking forward to working out where to display the Tower Bridge ... There are certainly some good deals for Lego around, but I guess that this is a sign of a shrinkage of disposal income for many people. The manager of my local Argos said last week when I picked up my 3 for 2 Star Wars Lego that sales have been very bad and they had to do a good offer.

Posted by finger2314 in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 11:36

Does anyone know exactly when the offer comes into play? Oct. 1st? Later?

Posted by rainstorm26 in Europe, 28 Sep 2010 13:18

Huw - I am disappointed in your opinion of the Train in the Hogwarts Express as I really was interested getting the set. In particular, the flying car. Maybe I'll have to pick up the flying car via ebay or Bricklink.

Posted by Zybak in United States, 28 Sep 2010 13:44

I got my HP sets on 26-Sep-10 (US)

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 13:56

@vman100: we asked our local Legostore in Chandler about that and they said they would only be able to give store credit not a monetary refund. So basically I would be buying those same HP sets twice just to get points. Not worth my time or effort.

Posted by Tervlon in United States, 28 Sep 2010 14:09

My local Target in Northern Virginia has had Harry Potter sets out for over a week. Is this unusual or is everyone seeing them?

Posted by goldfish in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 14:28

If the new Harry Potter film gets good reviews and is popular (almost certainly the case), there is a chance that the Lego Hogwarts Castle might be unobtainable during December. Its definately a buy early job for me.

Posted by brickupdate in United States, 28 Sep 2010 15:15

@Goldfish - is there a history of LEGO Hogwarts' Castle's selling out around the holidays? With the higher price point, I imagine it will be like many of the other amazing but expensive sets - plentiful because a small percentage of parents can buy them, especially when that same money can buy a video game system or several videogames.

Posted by Doctor Leg O'Brick in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 15:42

As DrDaveWatford said, can the train be put on train tracks from the city line?? I'm not going to buy any sets from the HP line but i have friends who think they might.

Posted by Firox 5000 in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 15:55

I was hoping to buy all the sets but maybe now I will wait until the express goes on sale somewhere like amazon.

Posted by grelb32 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 16:51

I'm probably not going to wait for the VIP points. Instead, I'm going to buy the sets on Amazon, where I can get free shipping deals, instead of paying $5 - $15 bucks more than their MSRP.

Posted by itsaturkey in United States, 28 Sep 2010 17:38

Are those mushrooms in Hagrid's hHt set new? I think I've seen them before, maybe they were at brickforge.
imagine ordering the death star with the double vip points, you'd get $40! which means it would only be $360, or the UCS MF were you'd get $50.

Posted by Crt2 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 18:03

Does This Mean I'll Get $10 Off The Castle?

Posted by Crt2 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 18:04

@itsaturkey: Actually, There Just 1x1 White Cones with Printed Radio Disks on Top of Them. (Right Huw?)

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 18:07

Sorry to repeat questions but anyone who has the train, does it fit on city tracks?

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 28 Sep 2010 18:09

Yes it does

Posted by legogirl19 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 18:34

For those of you who have received their HP pre-orders, did you also receive the alternate "Burrow" instructions? What do they look like?

Posted by R4-G9 in Canada, 28 Sep 2010 18:54

huw when you got your hp sets you said that you would review them and their have been no reviews yet, why?

Posted by mommylego in United States, 28 Sep 2010 19:04

@legogirl19--We pre-ordered and received the entire HP collection, but the alternate Burrow instructions were NOT included. Thanks for reminding me to follow up with Lego about that.

Posted by Zybak in United States, 28 Sep 2010 19:05

Lego Store (Free Shipping)- The Lego Store offers free shipping if the item is unavailable at the store. Its a good way to get double points and free shipping in October

BTW- Exclusive Halloween sets are on sale from Oct 25-27 according to the Lego October Calendar

Posted by xena6296 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 19:20

@Zybak: What kind of sets to be considered as Halloween sets? Thanks.

Posted by censtar in Germany, 28 Sep 2010 20:24

i was at the lego brand store in Wiesbaden on Monday, they had all the Harry Potter sets, Winter Village Bakery and Tower Bridge in stock already. In Germany we did get vouchers on the store calendar for september, 20% off one product/day for vip customers - so I got Winter Village Bakery at 43,99 €. Tower Bridge didn't impress me enough to spend 176 € on it.

Posted by husher180 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 20:54

@Zyback and xena6296: The halloween sets are available now at some Lego stores. They are $1.99 and consist of a bat, pumkin, and ghost. Certainly nothing you couldn't build with spare pieces you probably already have. You can see them on the Oct. Lego calendar. I also saw a turkey set that was $4.99. The Tower Bridge was available for sale too, but no HP stuff.

Posted by xena6296 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 21:30

@husher180: Thanks, will look for that.

Posted by Legoguy29 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 22:49

Mommylego, I too was shafted out of the alternate instructions for the burrow. As were a few others as I have read...

Posted by ceroknight in Canada, 28 Sep 2010 23:25

question, is the double vip points all month long or one time?

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 28 Sep 2010 23:46

The double points are for evey purchase you make from October 1st-31st.

Posted by ceroknight in Canada, 28 Sep 2010 23:46

sweet thanks!

Posted by Zybak in United States, 29 Sep 2010 00:24

@husher: thanks for the info

What would you choose?

A: Drive up to Lego Store 55mins (Anaheim) get double VIP pts?

or

B" Drive up to Legoland (30mins) and get 10% off?
**has a better pick a brick selection

Posted by starfire2 in United States, 29 Sep 2010 00:43

Depends on the price of the item. 10 % off could be as little as $1.00 but double VIP points could add up to $5.00 off.

Posted by cara in United States, 29 Sep 2010 01:23

Isn't it the same? 10% of $100 = $10, VIP points on $100 set = 5 dollars off, doubled = $10.

But I'm based as I love pick-a-bricking in the few mixed tubs they have on the bottom shelf at Legoland.

Posted by AZFIREWOLF in United States, 29 Sep 2010 01:26

Remember this when it comes to VIP points. They equal .05 per dollar you spend. So if you are saving your points for stuff make your purchases in Oct. then save them for the holidays. Can't wait to get my bakery. I might even get 2 or 3 or more. Just depends on my feelings at the time. I am wondering what the markup is going to be on these on the 2nd or 3rd market.

Posted by iabstract in United States, 29 Sep 2010 10:38

I can confirm the double VIP points for October. Got a flyer in the mail just the other day announcing it. Perfect timing for that Winter Bakery. :)

Posted by Irene in United States, 29 Sep 2010 11:03

Box arrived last night. Haven't opened it, as my working area isn't ready.
My "Castle" set is already on back order... Or it just won't be sent until after October 1.

I'm in Connecticut in the US, so I got charged sales tax and shipping. I probably should have waited and driven to the local ToysRUs or WalMart.

Posted by neilnemitz in United States, 29 Sep 2010 11:54

I called Lego yesterday about the alternate building instructions for the Burrow. The representative said they would be emailing the instructions out as a PDF file very soon. Sounds like we won't be getting hard copies.

Posted by Matthew in United Kingdom, 29 Sep 2010 12:16

neilnemitz - Was that a US only offer? If it was please can you put the instructions on somewhere like file jumbo or email Huw for Brickset so that others can access them? Thanks

Posted by Legoguy29 in United States, 29 Sep 2010 16:24

Irene, I assume you're referring to Hogwarts. I would suggest not going to Toys R Us, they have a crazy mark up on the castle! They're charging $150 for it. So, paying for tax and shipping, you probably saved money over TRU.

Posted by getjudyherenow in United States, 29 Sep 2010 17:47

I finished building the train...must say it was a little disappointing....passenger car needs doors....engine and tender look to small.....I don't know how to motorize the thing....I guess I was spoiled after building the Emerald Night. This engine would have been a winner if it only had the bigger drivers....maybe next time. The flying car and the minifigures are the key pieces to this set. Flying car was a real joy to build with lots of pieces and looks great. Can't wait to start on the castle. Don't forget Mr. Lego, you need to put the bigger drivers on the steam engines.

Posted by lukehankenobi in United Kingdom, 30 Sep 2010 06:41

The car in Privet drive looks better. The Burrow is an excellent build. I want Grimwald place!
