That looks cool! But it also looks like its fan made.

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 11:14

YAAAA!!!!! This is brilliant, I can only hope it becomes a 'big' theme like Star Wars or City, Rather then flopping in the second 'wave' like Mars Mission, Power Miners and Indy Jones. But then Atlantis has done well, coming to rest somewhere in the middle...

So what does everyone else think? Will it be like Star Wars, Atlantis, or Mars Mission?

Posted by Markey in Belgium, 18 Nov 2010 11:19

I'm not a big pirate fan myself, and not a fan of licenced lego themes either. I'll spend my lego budget on the new pharao theme in stead (and a few others as well of course).

@DrathMaul1997 The themes you mention didn't flop, TLG only wanted them to last 2 years.

Posted by jake9 in United States, 18 Nov 2010 11:23

I'm not a fan of the movies, or any license themes for that matter, but Lego sure knows what appeals to kids.

Posted by Sky-guardian in United States, 18 Nov 2010 11:29

It will be interesting to see which scenes they make...

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 11:35

Really? I stand corrected then, However my point still stays, Mars Mission was (as far as I know, which apparently isn't very far^^) very popular in the first year with 12 sets, however next year Lego 'forgot' about it, with it going back-stage. Most of the 8 sets in the second wave were smaller, Impulse sets.

You may note that people only own about 5000 1st wave sets, but 5500 2nd wave sets. This is most likely because, as noted above, most of the sets were smaller and thus more affordable.

Posted by Huw in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 11:40

It almost certainly won't be 'big': I predict there'll be one wave of sets to coincide with the movie and possibly a few beforehand based on previous movies, if we're lucky.

So, more like a Prince Of Persia than a Harry Potter...

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 11:46

*Desperately Hoping there'll be more then one wave*

Posted by jatonaz in Taiwan, Province of China, 18 Nov 2010 11:59

At least two ships-the black pearl and the flying dutchman? If so, count me excited. Hope the crew looks nice. Don't see a possiblity for a ground based set, other than the watermill fight scene, which'll be a definite pickup if made. A watermill along with the rumored Kingdom windmill will make my year, so to speak.

Posted by VonVeederVeld in United States, 18 Nov 2010 12:03

Johnny Depp minifig will = instantly bigger than prince of persia....imo

Posted by vamproe in United States, 18 Nov 2010 12:20

a black peril
a flying dutchman
the gaint octopus
the cannibal scene with the bone cage would be great

I see the firs twave based on the new movie and then additional sets after that of ships and stuff from the first 3 movies

Posted by skullsndogbones in United States, 18 Nov 2010 12:39

Jatonaz - For land based sets, they could make something involving Port Royal, Tortuga, or the cannibals village. Didn't one of the fantasy era castle sets have a hanging cage made of "bone"? Something like that would be perfect with the cannibals. (oops, just noticed that Vamproe already mentioned that!) Of course, I'd be mostly interested in the ships, but as a huge POTC fan, I'll likely buy most or all of the sets they come out with.

Posted by Wiseman_2 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 12:51

My bet is it'll have two or three waves. If they're releasing a Lego POTC game, then it stands to reason that they're making as much use of the licence as possible, so will put out more than just one wave.

And though I quite like Pirate stuff, I don't usually buy much outside of Technic as I have very little display room as it is :)

Posted by legowomen1980p in United States, 18 Nov 2010 13:10

Huw,
I think your wrong about these sets.. Harry Potter was huge and so will be Prince of Persia too. This will be like all the rest have been.. even Batman sets were once sold on e-bay and amazon for less than they were worth... now look at the prices..

Disney sets will continue to come out as the movies do.. I can't predict there will be a Prince of Persia 2 or maybe a Pirates of the Caribbean 5. But if there are, there will be sets made, I bet you..

It's not an end.. It's an end to the first year's line... there will be others...

I think that like any other theme from Lego the resale value will be huge.. To a collector and reseller.. If I had a boat load of money in this bad economy I would invest it all in these sets..

8 Sets, wow.. that is huge.. I can see maybe 4 or 5 sets, but 8? does that mean there will first be 5 then then through out the year others will be released? or will some be Duplo and others be mini-figure size?

I love the Pirates sets and am a ship collector AFOL. Jack Sparrow looks awesome and I can imagine seeing him sell for $20 after they end the series on E-Bay..

Themed sets = Money$$$$

maybe not at first.. but once they cancel the line.. their prices jump up a lot...

Awesome News! 8 Sets, Can't Wait to Review Them. Here are the top 3 things I'm hoping for:
- The Black Pearl
- Flying Dutchman with all those CRAZY minifigs
- The enormous amount of gold pieces these sets should have.
Bring it on. THE BRICK SHOW!

Posted by vamproe in United States, 18 Nov 2010 13:46

and don't forget a skeleton monkey......gotta have a skeleton monkey

Posted by MisterGeolix814 in United States, 18 Nov 2010 14:04

@vamproe:YEA!!!!!!

Posted by carding in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 14:16

oh no it sounds like those of us who wanted pirates to return permantly not for a year :( will have to wait longer.

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 18 Nov 2010 14:24

Maybe I'm alone on this but I thought the Prince of Persia sets were, as a whole, phenomenal and I cannot wait for Pirates of the Caribbean especially after the incredible Imperial Flagship!

Posted by Pulpdiction in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 14:24

Love the pirsates sets and think these will be a good addition, but they will also break records for most expensive lego sets ever in terms of price per part. That Johnny Dep fig can't be cheap to produce.

Posted by v3dev in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 14:32

For land based, I can also imagine the final duel in the cave at the end of ep1, with the big chest of gold.
Big set with a lot of minifigs.
Also the execution of Jack. Althoug it's highly unlikely that we'll see an official gallows from Lego :D
But there is always brickforge.

Posted by bader in United States, 18 Nov 2010 14:53

Toy story worked well for me, this could be promising! Minifigs especially! But if it is at all like Star Wars the past few years I think were in for a let down.

Posted by Jarod98 in United Kingdom, 18 Nov 2010 15:10

@Pulpdiction - The sets won't be all that expensive. For Jack Sparrow they use plastic molds with decals and for his hair and hat, the stuff they used for Kit Fisto and Plo Koon's heads.

I'm not all that excited about this licence being made. First off, I've never seen any of the Pirates of the Carribean movies and don't intend to. Second, I'm planning on getting Star Wars (as usual), Pharaoh's Quest (which is re-introducing Adventurers), NinjaGo (possibly), and The City Space sets if they have value and I have the money.

Posted by jatonaz in Taiwan, Province of China, 18 Nov 2010 15:20

Thanks guys for reminding of some land scenes, you people definitely remember it better than I do ha. I totally agree the minifigs are gonna be a huge incentive to buy these sets (or pass them up), and like all licensed minifigs their values will balloon after a couple of years.

Posted by Orange Lemons in United States, 18 Nov 2010 16:24

the setrs will probably be good-great, especially piece-wise depending on how expensive they are. These Disney licensed themes also seem to be more resonably priced than Star Wars/Indy in general.

Posted by damien in Netherlands, 18 Nov 2010 16:24

POTC are great movies, but what news can Lego bring on this theme??? We already got some very powerful pirate-ships, but what's a pirate besides a ship??? On the positive side I can't think of any. On the negative side only a cashcow...

As some of you know I'm only interested in the Star Wars theme, but I love more great movies. For some years I'm wondering how Lego sets would look like if they were based on Lord of the Rings, but that's also a theme from which you can't make nice sets.

... And I'm still waiting on UCS Star Wars B-Wing!!!...

Posted by vamproe in United States, 18 Nov 2010 16:36

maybe they could somehow do minifigures that when placed in the dark you see a glow in the dark skeleton patern.
this would be a great way to show the curse effect; in day light a normal pirate but in the dark you see the glwo in the dark skeleton patern on it.
a davey jones figure. even the oriental ships from the 3rd movie.

Posted by c.lee.r in United States, 18 Nov 2010 16:37

looks like i know what i am getting in the future beside the new star wars sets. i remember a few years ago megablocks had the POTC sets. they stunk. daughter wanted the will turner set just for will turner. my tax return is going to legos i see already. i like jack sparrow alot and hope the sets are outragiously cool, and complex to build, and a Black Pearl that is to minifigure scale, bigger than the UCS falcon. anyone up to making a mosaic of the map? then posting a great pic? this is going to be a great year i see. now if they only made them affordable this would be a year to remember.

Posted by jonbuddy in United States, 18 Nov 2010 17:09

I'm SO excited it's official! I'm seeing a lot of MOCs in the future for this.....

Posted by legobob in United States, 18 Nov 2010 17:15

BOO whats lego trying to to do I mean I hate lisenses

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 18 Nov 2010 17:47

legobob- I heard LEGO was releasing four more licensed themes (probably including POTC).

I personaly don't like the movies, I would like to see it go like POP or at least only two years like IJ. (I don't like any of those three themes.)

I am going to spend my money on Pharoah's Quest (and using my Adventures figures rather than the Kilroy wannabe [Hale]), City, and trying to get more than one Series 3 figure (I live in a rural community where the nearest TRU is at least an hour away, and they charge 10% tax). Sorry for getting of topic somewhat.

A glow in the dark print wouldn't work because if the light hit it right, you would be able to see the print and the normal figure, plus they would have a flat skull face which would look strange. I don't see LEGO making cannibals either, that is a horrible thing that you would expect that from a toy company of such quality!

Posted by spency13 in United States, 18 Nov 2010 18:08

It would be awesome if they had a Flying Dutchman minifig! I like the POTC movies, but i don't know about these sets. (on another note, I STILL WANT MORE Harry Potter sets!)

Posted by yellowcastle in United States, 18 Nov 2010 18:11

There's one more Harry Potter movie as they've split the final book into 2 films.

Posted by sudorum in United States, 18 Nov 2010 18:22

It was only a matter of time. Lego might as well get a license for every Disney movie that comes out.

Posted by Captain Blockbeard in United States, 18 Nov 2010 18:27

I couldn't possibly fit another Lego pirate ship on my designated pirate-themed shelves, so I hope Lego will make sets of interest beyond the Black Pearl or Flying Dutchman. Most likely, I'll collect a few sets for the figures, but as much as I enjoyed the movies, I doubt this series will appeal to me the way the Prince of Persia sets did for their uses beyond simply being PoP-related.

Posted by deiwi in Czech Republic, 18 Nov 2010 18:34

Great news! Attack on Port Royal (EP1) would be also nice set. Can't wait for pics and more info.

Posted by Orthobotrex in Philippines, 18 Nov 2010 18:38

So LEGO has a pirate theme already, yet it still acquired a license for these buccaneers! Will it follow suit with other movie themes? I hope they do with Lord of the Rings!

Posted by Bumblepants in Cameroon, 18 Nov 2010 19:12

I would expect them to make as many minifigs as possible and spread them around the line to make you need/want to get them all. I would imagine Jack Sparrow getting at least 2 variants if not up to 4 with his various costumes and the face paint from #2. I would be surprised if they released more than 1 large ship at a time. I think they will anchor the line with the Black Pearl and then release whatever ship is the main boat for the new film. Blackbeard and the Fountain of Youth are in the next film and should get attention.

Posted by iabstract in United States, 18 Nov 2010 20:19

As much as I dislike what the Pirates series became, I think a Black Pearl set would be pretty cool, as well as one of Davey Jones' ship and crew. It was also announced they were making a Lego Pirates of the Caribbean video game.

Posted by Trandoshan in Canada, 18 Nov 2010 21:44

It seems there will also be a video game: http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2010/11/dive_into_lego_pirates_of_the_caribbean_next_year

Posted by wildcherryp3psi in United States, 18 Nov 2010 22:14

One word....WANT!

Posted by damien in Netherlands, 19 Nov 2010 00:05

Just awake after a night with beautiful Lego dreams ... What about UCS Cars' sets??? Building your own Lightning McQueen with more than 2000 bricks....

Posted by Lego Lord Mayorca in United States, 19 Nov 2010 01:04

No! Pirates of the Caribbean is so 3 years ago, in spite of the upcoming film. Why not TRON? It's release is eminent, and who wouldn't want their own Lego light-cycle, tank, or Recognizer? Plus, light-up pieces can actually be useful and not become some garish gimmick like in 2005 with the Revenge of the Sith sets. Who knows? Perhaps TRON Legacy sets are scheduled for the latter half of 2011?!

Posted by DrathMaul1997 in United Kingdom, 19 Nov 2010 04:21

@above - I don't think Lego will make Tron sets, the whole 'Tron' thing just isn't as widely known as POTC, POP, or Harry potter (Or at least not in Lego's target age group). Don't get me wrong, Tron is good, but not for making money if you get my point...

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 19 Nov 2010 06:30

syahcire-Kind of like they did with Toy Story.

Posted by middlerealm in United Kingdom, 19 Nov 2010 08:36

Huh... Interesting... I wonder (at the risk of starting a pitiful flame war) why MB lost the PotC contract. Glad Lego picked it up though, as I think they'll do the sets more justice.

Posted by Yankeesboy08 in United States, 20 Nov 2010 19:37

Actually, there is a picture of a Lego tron game. It says it's coming next month

Posted by gunslinger69 in United States, 21 Nov 2010 19:01

can't wait huge fan of the orginal pirate set's . say what you will capt jack = money gaming community is going nuts about the video game .

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 22 Nov 2010 06:36

Yankeesboy08-If that was from Eurobricks in April last year, that was a joke.

Posted by BooMakuta! in United States, 22 Nov 2010 14:13

Well, Lego should do something EVERYBODY has seen or read. I mean, for example, I thought Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time was a video game until I actually saw the movie. Harry Potter, good. Star Wars, phenomenal. But I have never watched Pirates of the Caribbean, so I won't be buying any of those sets. I think NinjaGo and Star Wars will produce the best sets...

Posted by Necaradan666 in Australia, 22 Nov 2010 20:32

Oh yuck, seems like I'm the only one reading this that thought the PotC movies were utter trash. I guess my thoughts on the theme will depend on the sets themselves. I can't believe the theme will run very long is there really that much content that can be turned into Lego? Will probably be similar in size with Prince of Persia and Indiana Jones themes.

Posted by Berrybrick in United States, 23 Nov 2010 06:34

^No, I am with you.

Posted by BooMakuta! in United States, 23 Nov 2010 09:33

I agree with Necaradan666. The movies-well, after a while, "Oops! No more content left to make! Better discontinue it."

Posted by johnny-t in United States, 26 Nov 2010 00:36

Now, I'll never put MegaBloks before LEGO, but I have to admit that the MB versions of the "Pirates" ships they did a few years back were actually pretty sweet. I hope that LEGO is going to go back and re-do all of the ships from the movies as well. I would love to see the Black Pearl and Flying Dutchman in LEGO form! WE NEED MORE LEGO SHIPS!!!
