I've been playing with LEGO since I was a toddler in the early 1970's.

The earliest sets I played with are:
379 Car and Caravan
1 Basic building set. http://guide.lugnet.com/set/1_7
200 LEGO Family
261 Dolls Kitchen
...and as best as I can tell, my brother and I had either set 513 or 520 (c. 1976) also. I distinctly remember the blue car and the red car, and I don't see a blue car in any other Duplo sets. The cars provided neat building plates for regular-sized bricks.

I think it was LEGO, not me, that went into the dark ages sometime in the early 2000's. I remember being in TRU in Dec 2001 eager to take advantage of their buy 1 set, get 1 50% off sale. The sad thing is that I did not see even one set that I wanted. I ended up buying a Duplo set for a couple that just had a baby and a Racers car for a friend's young son.

Since 2005, LEGO came back making some of their best sets ever.
