- Favorite Themes: Star Wars, Super Heroes, Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings/Hobbit, Indiana Jones
Other themes of choice: Collectible Minifigures, LEGO Movie, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Toy Story, Cars, Disney Princess, Pirates of the Caribbean, Lone Ranger, Ninjago, City, Pharaoh's Quest, Dino, Alien Conquest, CHIMA, Simpsons
Growing up I would only get small sets every so often from all different types of themes just depending on if they had a cool new animal or item/weapon/accessory. So my childhood collection is a hodge-podge of Knights, Pirates, Space, Aquazone, and others.
Then in 1999 my dreams came true and LEGO came out with Star Wars sets! Most of the time I was just playing Star Wars out of the LEGO sets I had anyway, so to get the actual minifigs and ships and accessories was great. From that point I was pretty much focused on Star Wars sets. Then when Harry Potter sets came out I went for some of those too, but not as diligently.
Nowadays my top priority is still Star Wars, but I haven't been able to resist getting sets from other licensed themes as well. I have been particularly impressed this year (2011) by Pharaoh's Quest and Ninjago so I've branched out a bit more than usual there. I've also spent a lengthy amount of time feeling Collectible Minifig packages trying to pick out the one I want. Haven't made a mistake feeling the packages yet.
I hope to attend a LEGO convention at some point; maybe if one comes a bit closer to my area. And while the thought of making a grand MOC like some AFOLs out there do would be really great, these days I just don't have the time or resources to take on such a project. For now I just admire the work of others and observe the unique building techniques that are out there.
On a side note, I'm excited to see where this partnership with LEGO and Disney will keep going. I'd be very excited to see sets come out of classic Disney movies like Aladdin, Hercules, Beauty and the Beast, and many more in addition to more Pixar sets like Monsters Inc. and the Incredibles.
UPDATE (July 2011): Went to my first LEGO convention Brick Fiesta in Austin. I have to say it was very impressive to see in person the models I usually see on brickshelf.
UPDATE (July 2013): I've been to the Brick Fiesta exhibit all three years now and this year was the first time I did the multi-day membership. Going to the panels and getting tours of the MOCs was awesome! I learned a lot of new building techniques and had a lot of fun. The experience definitely fueled my creativity and in future years I hope to have something on display myself.
