The classics are the best

Posted by Rollo Tomassi in United States on 05 November 2009

Finally aquired one of these (30 years later) and I have to say the original Space Sets have a functional elegance about them. Many of the later sets opted for more pizazz in their aesthetic design, but with less functionality.

This set, however is exactly what it says; a Mobile Rocket Launcher. The front vehicle has a cool, spinning radar station with a computer and dish on a side attachment. And the rear has the actual rocket complete with a hinge launch arm and an early prototype 'satellite'. There is a slight design fail in having the gray right angle bracket right in the middle of the rocket, but I figured you can detatch the gray bracket along with the rocket. It's much easier than dismantling the rocket every time. Aside from that one flaw, this is a great early set with lots of play value. Highly recommended.

Not Much in the Bag

Posted by bmwlego in United States on 05 November 2009

This set has a grand total of 12 parts! I bought this set simply for the Rock Monster. It does launch like it shows on the package which is a cool play feature but you get what you see with this set. Not even any extra parts. I now have 5 of these little Rock Monsters so if I want to make a Power Miners scene I have the Rock Monsters to do so.

Great Impulse Set

Posted by bmwlego in United States on 05 November 2009

Power Miners have really grown on me. I've become a sucker for lime green LEGO and the PM minifigs themselves are really cool. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the head has 2 expressions. I don't know what the first reviewer was talking about when he said this set didn't come with spare parts. They come with an extra lime cheese slope, 2 extra control hinges, 2 extra lime round plates and 2 extra Technic connectors for a total of 7 extra pieces. The set itself comes with 2 lime 1x2 plates and a lime curved 1x3 slope.
The set itself looks cute and fits in well next to other PM sets but it is basic and small! It is an Impulse set so this isn't a complaint just pointing out the obvious. You can move the arm on the vehicle up and down which is a neat play feature. The blue crystal is cool as I didn't own this piece before buying this set.

Command of what?

Posted by Rollo Tomassi in United States on 05 November 2009

I'm not really sure what you're supposed to Command, mobily or otherwise with this set. Sure, it's a rugged little wheeled vehicle with some greebles on it, but I'm not sure what the point is.

The highlight is the two minifigs that come with jetpacks. But otherwise this is just a non-descript ground vehicle that gets a couple guys from point A to point B.

Fast little troublemaker

Posted by Rollo Tomassi in United States on 05 November 2009

So I won this on eBay today in a mixed lot. I actually wanted the 2 Blacktron figures the seller had in the lot (instead of the Futuron minifig it comes with) and I honestly thought this was just some little ship he had cobbled together out of spare parts. But after I started researching it here at Brickset I discovered it was an actual set.

I really like how the wings and the tail fold up to cut the size in half. It's like a portable one man drop ship you can hook to a larger craft for deployment. Then four little engines and three laser cannons open up for some serious damage. And even though there aren't many pieces in the set, there is a nice variety of parts for creativity.

For 35 cents I am very impressed with my lucky purchase!

Nice toa set

Posted by K---The-Bionicle-fan in Iceland on 05 November 2009

This was my first Toa metru set.
It´s a really great set because the mask looks nice the colorscheme is great and the tools look good.

Pros
- Good Price
- Great Mask
- Cool weapons
- Nice Design his body configuration which is shared with toa nokama makes him one of the bigger toa metru sets.

Cons
- The Angle of the arms causes them to swing a lot by the weight of the weapons
- Unrealistic poseability in the arms, they dont bend as far as the new designs that was shown first in the inika.
-Armor pieces, mask and torso armor piece are made of softer plastic than the rest and it causes them to get scratched or bent easily.

CLAAS Act

Posted by Monty in United Kingdom on 05 November 2009

Not bought much Lego for ages as there was nothing in the 2009 sets that really inspired me, and the few I have bought have not been made up yet. When this first appeared in the catalogue I thought it looked good, but I also thought it was a bit pricey for what it was so I didn’t get it. When the Xmas catalogue arrived last week my wife said have you seen this combine harvester – it looks really good – so with that seal of approval I went and got one. She was actually with me when I got it and I also persuaded her to get me the Venerator for Christmas – result!

I have made this straight away and it looks pretty good to me. Combines are a fairly distinctive vehicle anyway, but this does look very accurate compared to photos of various machines I have studied. I love watching them in operation for real – they can usually be spotted by the huge cloud of dust that accompanies them, or you drive round a bend in a country lane and have to brake sharply as one is coming at you taking up the whole road like some sort of lumbering monster on its way to the next field because they cannot be bothered to remove the cutter. The modular build technique of this set does allow you to remove the whole cutter assembly just like on the real thing.

The colour scheme of green and white is quite good, as it is seen on the CLAAS machines, but I would have liked it better if they had used the more accurate lime green colour and the rotary collector/cutter could have been in red to complete the authentic appearance of those machines.

I think the cab detail is good as is the cutter and the detail on the top of the machine with the exposed drying gear fan is good. As had been said the cutter rotates as you push it along, and so far mine has not fallen apart as suggested by others – it needs to be tight on tolerances as otherwise it would foul the support arm as it rotates. Rear steering wheels might be an easy addition, and I am working on adding external mirrors and an accurate ladder arrangement so it actually reaches down to nearer the ground, and I am tweaking colours to a better combo rather than say a green 2x1 plate where a white one should be used. There are some stickers, but in view of the fact that I now know through bitter experience (see my earlier reviews) these will go brittle, disintegrate, and peel off in about 2 years time so it means I am no longer applying and stickers to my new Lego models.

The big disappointment for me was the bales falling out of the middle of the underside of the vehicle. I had expected some sort of mechanism or similar worked by pushing it along that would have worked them through to the back, but you just lift the top of the grain bin off and drop them in so they can fall straight through or just as easily stick and never come through. They really should be falling out nearer the back and assisted by some sort of mechanism driven from the wheels would have been better – especially for the price.

Although the finished vehicle is quite large and does contain the new hexagon plate elements to make the collector/cutter, I feel the set is overpriced – especially with the bale drop through. But it continues to impress me as a static model and has potential for tweaks so I will give it a 4.

Better than people say it is.

Posted by deadtree103 in Canada on 05 November 2009

Despite what quite a few people say about this set, it's one of my favorite sets.

THE MINIFIGS
*The new King figure is pure WIN. I mean, who can resist those beautiful printed legs and the chrome gold sword?(I had an old silver version a while ago, but I can't find it)I much prefer this style of sword to the tiny ones that the random soldiers have.

*The crownie figure isn't really anything special, but he does have the best torso out of the three that the Crownie's have. And he also has the type of helmet that I've never had before.

*The trolls aren't anything special either, but they each have the Troll shield (Which I can't get enough of). But the Troll with the bronze helmet (Which I hate with a passion, as the gunmetal helmets look much better)looks disgusting with that Torso and the bronze helmet.

THE CHARIOT
It's actually really good. I've never seen that size of wheel before, and more gold flags are always welcome. really the only downside is that there is NOTHING to keep the chest from falling off the back.(I would have mentioned the price, but I got this as a birthday present, so the price doesn't matter)

Well now that that's done, I can get on with the Pro's and Con's.

PROS :)
*Awesome King.
*Chrome Gold sword.
*More Troll shields.
*New type of wheels(I think).

CONS :(
*Poor choice of helmets for the Trolls.
*Nothing stopping the chest from falling off.

Well, I give this set a 5/5. The Pro's heavily out weigh the Con's.

Not bad not bad whatsoever.

Posted by kibble123456789 in United States on 04 November 2009

So when I got it I was pretty lucky because it was the last one at the lego store. But anyway on to the review.

First of all the figures. Nute Gunray is exclusive so obviously he's pretty cool. If you want a droid commander this is probably the cheapest set with some one to command your droid army! Ocanda Farr is exclusive as well the only con is that he has a very short head making him very short compared to Nute gunray with his tall hat. The droids are average but a nice addition because first of all you need some one to drive it. And second you have 2 droids to escort Gunray.

Now on to the ship allot bigger then i expected. Pros are the landing gear, the color scheme, it has nice landing gear, a passenger seat and pilot seat, and the technic-like opening back door. The only con is the stick-like piece falls off allot.

so there you have it. Definitely worth it for the many mini figs, the color scheme, the size, 2 seats, and the technic-like doors

It works!

Posted by Tommy_60 in United States on 04 November 2009

My friend got me this set along with the rock hacker when he went to Legoland California last week. I love this set! The catapult function actually works! If you hit it hard enough, the rockmonster or whatever you're catapulting can go up to 7 feet! Maybe farther!

Pros : The catapult works!
Sulfurix rockmonster included!
Yellow crystal!
3 2x3 slanted bricks!
There are extra pieces! Tons of 'em!
Cons : WHY IN THE WORLD WOULD THIS SET HAVE CONS?!?!?!?!?!?! Lego made it, thus it's perfect!

Overall rating : 100/10

Small but amazing!

Posted by Tommy_60 in United States on 04 November 2009

This set has less than 40 pieces, but it's still amazing!

My friend got this set to me when he visited Legoland California last week. I built this model in a few minutes since I was in a car at the time. The instructions are like that of any impulse set's. Now onto the pros and cons!

Pros : Cool double headed minifigure!
The claw actually goes up and down!
Blue crystal!
4 nice sized wheels!
Cons : Once the set is built, there are no spare pieces!

I'll still give this set a 10/10.

Pretty Good I Guess

Posted by KennyD99 in United States on 04 November 2009

Swordsman should not have a turban. I didn't see the movie, but in the trailer, (Which I saw) there were like 3 thugs. Swordsman should have a better scimitar, not a goblin sword. I LOVE the swordsman's face! I could look at it for hours without getting bored! I make lego animation videos, And this set has so much potential. The build is boring, but the minifigs are cool. The ninja mask is really really really cool

Pros:
Minifigs
Club is AWSOME!
Swordsman face is hillarious (but it kinda scares me!)

Cons:
Needs more thugs

I highly recommend it!

Sheriff's Lock-Up

One of the most fun sets ever

Posted by Korik4 in United Kingdom on 04 November 2009

As the box's picture may describe, this is one of the more exciting sets from Lego. And for that reason, one of the best. Whilst not being the biggest set in the world, there's a lot you can do with it.

For starters, there's four interesting minifigs included in the set, two 'bad' guys and two 'good' guys. Also featured are a rather large array of items for a set this size, such as guns, money, playing cards, dynamite and others. There's also a horse, (just one?) and a large-sized barrel not found in many sets.

The best feature of this set is the exploding door, which worked very well as I recall. As previously mentioned, I had a lot of fun playing with this set as a kid, so I would heartily recommend this as a toy for children.

This set is easy to build too, so you won't have to wait long before you can get to grips with this. Inside the sheriff's office there is a desk with a safe, and desk.

This set is average if you're looking for a good build but for fun or collection, one of the best sets of the time. Bring back the western theme!

Another Great Mini-Set…

Posted by LegoCoastalPatrol in United Kingdom on 04 November 2009

Managed to pick this ‘free’ set up from the Trafford Centre this afternoon on my way home, the traffic on the motorway was so busy I was stationary for quite some time so I could have built it while I was in the queue! But I didn’t, I resisted until I got home.

Anyway, my second Daily Mirror promotion kit, the ‘Jeep’ is another very pleasing simple build. The jeep is presented in a red colour scheme with grey wheels and grey wing mirrors. Large round headlights are provided as are a grill and tow bar. The small cab area features tinted windows and a red roof.

Another nice, simple addition to the Creator line…

Shuttle Launch Pad

One of the best sets Lego have created

Posted by Korik4 in United Kingdom on 04 November 2009

There are so many good things to write about this set, it's difficult to know where to start. Well, first off, the set looks fantastic. A fabulous centerpiece of any Lego collection, it also looks realistic as well. I recieved this bad boy for Christmas one year and preceeded to build it straight away, the whole set took around one and a half to two and a half hours to build.

The crane works well too, it's always nice to see a mechanical/electrical element to work well with all those bricks. The seperate parts of the shuttle work well too, the rockets and the fuel tank can all be dismantled in stages like the real thing, and so does the moving launch pad. Also the shuttle includes a cool arm inside the storage area.

The minifigs are great, I love the scientist and the astronaut in particular.

I spent a lot of time with this set as a kid; the amount of hours someone can get out of this set is incredible. Me and my friend both had this set and we both loved them. (I remember my friend dropping his assembled set down the stairs)

I cannot recommend any other Lego set over this one, it really is that good.

One of my first sets

Posted by Korik4 in United Kingdom on 04 November 2009

I do not remember buying this set, or when I first built or played with it, I just remember always having it and spending a lot of time playing with it. The plane is as it looks; simple, easy to build, and a lot of fun.

This set is a great alternative to the larger and more expensive planes at the time, and the minifig was a staple character for the storylines me and my friend made for Lego games. We called the stubbled, sunglasses-wearing man Max, just because he 'looks' like he's called Max.

I would recommend this if bought for a child as a toy, but to a serious Lego builder/collector, well, what you see is what you get with this one. I think you'll be able to make your own mind up.

Rather good space set

Posted by Korik4 in United Kingdom on 04 November 2009

First off, this ship looks very cool once built. Very slick and the colours contrast with each other nicely too. I am a fan of the large speceships that detach into smaller ships, (The Ice planet Deep freeze defender being the prime example) and this is a fine addition to that group. The wings are a splendid little touch, it gives the model a slight degree of personalisation, that some models tend to lack.

There's a lot of interesting pieces in this set, unfortunately I'm petrified of any of them breaking, especially the wings and antennae. The magnets are a nice idea, although the sliding storage compartment tends to come loose and rattle around a lot. The sounds on the electronic part could have been better too.

In all, this is a very good set, although there are some slight negatives which stop this from being a great set. Definately worth a look if you see it cheap.

Great history book

Posted by Panda9001100 in Netherlands on 04 November 2009

What a great book. It tells all how lego ever started and how the name lego came form. It tells everything about the history of lego itself. What theme's there were and how they started. Great pictures and good quality paper.

Only the book looks bigger then it really is and the trains are explained very shortly. For only trains, leave it be. It's more interesting if you want to know a little of everything of lego itself.

For example, the first pirates sets form 1989 were the first minifigs with painted heads and was a bestseller at that time.

Any One Needs Some Batman Figures

Posted by samuraiturtle in United States on 04 November 2009

One of the few "sets" that does not have Batman. Yes this is a magnet set, but unlike the newer sets that the figures stand on a magnet, this one the magnets are in the figures. Do not worry you can still use them like regular mini-figures. The one good thing about this set is if you do not have any of the figures this makes up for it. I just hapen to have another Robin that I got in another set, so that makes this set even better for me since I do not have another Catwoman and Joker figure.
