Norik fought the Visorak hordes alongside the Toa Metru/Hordika, and when the Toa transported the Matoran to Mata Nui, he and his team remained behind, to cure the Rahi that had been mutated by Visorak Venom.

"I lead only those that choose to follow, that's the difference between being a leader and a tyrant like you."
— Toa Hordika Vakama to Roodaka, Web of Shadows

After discovering the island of Mata Nui, the Toa Metru returned to the ruined city of Metru Nui, to fetch the Matoran Pods.

During their absence, however, Visorak hordes had overrun the city, and the Toa Metru were captured and transformed into half-beast, half-Toa versions of themselves, known as Toa Hordika.
Overrun by despair, he later gave in to his beast side, and temporarily became a leader of the Visorak, but he later came to his senses and rejoined his team.

The Toa Hordika were later cured by Keetongu, and transported the Matoran Pods to Mata Nui, where they sacrificed their Toa Power to awaken the Matoran within the pods.

At the end of their long journey, when the heroic Toa of Ice, Matoro, sacrificed himself to save the universe, he also used the Mask to teleport the Toa Mahri back to their home, Metru Nui, and gave them the ability to breathe air as well as water.

— Narrator, The Final Battle

While the Toa Inika/Mahri were searching for the Mask of Life, the Toa Nuva were preparing to complete their destiny: awaken the Great Spirit Robot.

They were given Adaptive Armor and Kanohi by the legendary Artakha, and journeyed to Karda Nui, the core of the universe, where they would at last fulfill their destiny.
The Makuta were waiting, and after several clashes and the Final Battle, Mata Nui was at last awakened. The Toa returned in triumph to Metru Nui, only to find that Makuta Teridax was somehow in control of the universe.

Thus began the Reign of Shadows.
