Bricklist notes
Before Spider-man was his own theme, he made appearances in the LEGO Studios theme where he "filmed" his movie. This set marks the first appearance of Peter Parker, and the first ever LEGO alter ego. Unlike other Spider-Man sets, this one does not depict a certain theme from the film, instead it being its own original creation.

Bricklist notes
Considering that this set was an origins set, it was meant to tell the story of how Peter Parker and Norman Osborn became Spider-Man and the Green Goblin respectively, as portrayed in the 2002 movie.

Peter's origin story, according to the film, is that at a school field trip, a radioactive spider bit him, giving him superhuman abilities. After his uncle's death, it drove him to fight crime masked. Osborn's origin story has Oscorp developing a special strength enhancer who Osborn tests on himself. It fails and instead makes him go insane, to the point where he basically becomes Doctor Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

Peter Parker appeared in his polo and jacket outfit along with a camera, and Norman Osborn appeared with just pants on- hey, at least it's movie accurate.

The climax of the 2004 film Spider-Man 2, this set represented the scene where Spider-Man and Doc Ock clashed for the final time, before Octavius drowned his fusion reactor in the Hudson River. A flesh Peter Parker was included in the set, wearing a blue vest and black pants. This is the only set so far that has a physical, flesh colored Peter Parker.

Two years later, a new Super Hero theme was released- Batman. The Batcave set included a Bruce Wayne minifigure, wearing a suit. This figure was not based on Christian Bale's portrayal in Batman Begins, as the set is instead comic book based.

Wayne's origin story has him witnessing his parents' death as a young child. Seeking justice, he trained physically and mentally so that he could don the bat costume and fight crime.

It would be a long six years before a superhero was given another alter ego. 2012 brought the release of another Bruce Wayne minifigure, who was once again wearing a suit, this time a light blue. Again, he was comic book based, which explains his cartoony appearance. His face resembles that of Superman's minifigure appearance.

Arkham Asylum Breakout includes Harley Quinn's alter ego- Harleen Quinzel. A 1994 graphic novel titled Mad Love reveals that Quinzel was a psychiatrist at Arkham who treated the Joker. Joker fascinates Quinzel so much that it actually drives her to crime so that she may win over Joker's affection.

This set includes a separate jester headpiece so that she can "transform" into Harley Quinn.

Bricklist notes
Unlike other sets, this one includes Spider-Man's alter ego not in physical form, but rather on a tile piece showing Spider-Man's face on one side and Parker's on the other- showing who Spider-Man really is. I'm not too sure why he keeps his identity at a place that could easily expose it, but hey, what do I know?
