The Exo-Suit has been revealed!

Posted by ,

OMG -- I am blown away! The animation is fantastic! GREEN classic space minifigs!

The LEGO Ideas blog provides no further information or images, hopefully they'll be forthcoming later today.

For now, then, we will have to make do with this one. Last Friday LEGO published revised instructions for the Ecto-1 on their customer services page and eagle-eyed member OscarWRG spotted that it contained this image at the back. Knowing that its release would undermine the unveiling that the Exo-Suit team had planned for this week, I asked Oscar to keep quiet, and told the Ideas team so they could get it removed, which they did. Thankfully no other bloggers found it so the reveal was not spoiled.

So, we can see then that it comes with two classic space minifigs, a male and a female, in green, which of course is unprecedented, and the turtle too!

LEGO has sent out review copies today so I hope to be able to bring you a review middle of next week.

By in Australia,

Wow what a great set, it is very faithful to the original submission. I can't wait till August.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I dunno why, but there is something very odd about green astronauts with a British accent... Brilliant movie, and the suit itself looks spectacular. I've not looked at Peter's MOC's and prototypes so cannot comment on which is better, but as a stand alone model it is impressive. I'm just concerned what the price will be for such a detailed kit. I really hope it becomes part of a larger theme with some decent bad guys.

By in United Kingdom,

I am delighted with the final design, in fact I can see no way I would change it! A brilliant model, great reveal, well done to Pete, Mark and the animators!

I had a feeling the Minifigures might be an unusual colour, although my money was on pink. Green looks fantastic though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh my god! Wow great piece of animation and the exo-suit looks amazing

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Goodbye money. :'( :P

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Green minifigs :-) Yeah, they look great, and a welcome surprise for this Neo Classic set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Amazing... and I had a feeling for a while that the minifigures would be green.

Buying this straight away, no doubt...

Gravatar
By in France,

That's fantastic! I'm going to need at least two if not more!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The figs are quite cool... would you say the minifigures are 'classic space' or 'classic space style'?
The exo-suit is great without a smooth finish, much more realistic that way.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Loving this. Great work on the campaign, and many thanks to Huw and OscarWRG for not spoiling the fun.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

All I could think of watching that animation was... "Don't forget to put your helmet down so your poor Lego eyes don't explode in the vacuum of space outside!"

The set looks fantastic. And a very cute little animation too

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Oh wow, thats awesome. And a great video. I knew I was going to buy it, the question now is how many... ;-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Y'know, I wasn't actually that taken with the original prototype (sorry Pete!), but this is something else... I might actually have to buy it...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I want to know how many takes Pete needed on the voice over!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow, what an amazing set!!!
Sadly, I fear that this will have the same result as the original minecraft set though- it being sold out and the prices skyrocketing on eBay and bricklink....
Better be alert on the Lego website the first day released!!:)

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Looks like a great set! Naturally I'll have to build the yellow loading rack to house it too..

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Okay, now get us some space pirates, Lego! :o) Wooohaaa.... That's a great set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Amazing set, very happy with how it turned out. I think it's become my new favorite Cuusoo set. It's a definite buy for me, but those green classic space guys make it and INSTANT buy for me! Can't wait

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@kevbags Quite a few. Mostly for technical reasons. He nailed the scream in one take. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@OldScratch Technical reasons like everything has to be just so right or it won't do ;-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

What a brilliant set. I didn't really think so much of the original - it sort of passed me by - but this looks quite something.

I just hope it doesn't go the same way the Curiosity Rover went, with people only looking to make money snatching them all up then listing them at ridiculous prices on the secondary market... I don't know if that's because Lego didn't put a limit on how many you could buy, or whatever, but I seriously hope they implement some method to stop it happening with future sets like this.
The real fans miss out on some good stuff otherwise -.-

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very nice. And this has to have been the best reveal for a set in many years.

Here's hoping that they now re-release classic space minifigs / torsos in a range of colours.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I have really enjoyed the build up to this reveal. Peter Reid has done a great job creating a world for these Space figures to live in. I feel as if a new Space theme is looming! Also, a massive thank you to the Brickset team for not leaking the image on the back of the instructions! That really would have spoilt the story line.
Can't wait to buy my own Exo-suit and complete the story now!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I went from "yeah I'll probably buy one" to "I'm getting at least three" based on the green classic spacemen alone, not to dismiss the suit itself because it's awesome in it's own right.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

It's crazy how much craziness has circled this set release. I hope this is just the begining of a long slow journey up the classic space . . . mountian of a theme.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Words cannot express how much I LOVE this set! I have never been so eager to get hold of a set, I am definitely going to Bluewater to get at least two, 26th July (to get them signed, obviously), whether my friend who drives the car likes it or not... ;-P

Mind you, it looks quite tall compared to the original, but I'm glad the greebling remains :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Fantastic reveal!!!
Well, I can never have enough Classic Space, now we have New Classic Space, which is only ever going to be a good thing!
The only problem for me is deciding how many to buy :-)

Gravatar
By in Hungary,

I don't know what I like the most: The exo-suit, the turtle, the green space-suit or the wonderful music when the door opens. All of them are brilliant!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The build-up to this set - just brilliant.

Unfortunately, Bluewater is not only too far for me but also working then. However, I will be sure to buy this (or a couple) on release day.

Gravatar
By in Venezuela,

Thanks for mention me

Gravatar
By in France,

mix in some "hot rod red" and... hello hulkbuster!

Gravatar
By in France,

i will be getting a couple of these though. they look awesome! do instructions come with details for the big guns from the Ideas page, i wonder!

Gravatar
By in Czech Republic,

Hmmm, this is awesome! Now thinking about buying all three Ideas sets - GB, RI and ES... Here goes my money :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Now those green guys have got me dreaming about pink, orange, gray, purple, tan, sand blue, earth green etc. Space guys.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope Lego have good estimates for this set as it looks as though we are all intending on buying a couple as soon as we can. I'm sure we all have lots of questions but as I've seen the Ecto-1 and Minecraft in Non-brand stores I wonder if this set will be the same and be available more widely?. I hope so as it really deserves to be a huge seller. I cannot get to the Bluewater signing (inconvenient Daughter's birthday) but I'll be going to the nearest brand store first weekend. I cannot remember a set which met the expectation level more in terms of delivering something new and honouring such a classic theme. Well done to Pete and Mark and thanks to Oscar and Huw for not spoiling the brilliant reveal the guys put together over the last few days.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

*@#?ing brill!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looks fantastic have to get a few of these, yeah to green space guys

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ahhhh now I am definitely buying 2!!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Pete screaming. Excellent.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wow Wow Wow! love it. I thought the original was good but this is even better, so pleased to see the turtle included aswell and that we not only have space figs but in a new Colour. Pete and the desgin team at TLG have done an incredible job, just praying I can get one now.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Oh my god. I just love it. I have t have that! Green minifigs. Classic space logo. I am so excited. Oncve more congratulation to the creator of this wonderful idea. I voted for Exo Suit many months ago and it seems like all this time was worth waiting. This is certainly the best Cuusoo/Ideas set so far!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

In my opinion, the Exo-Suit is very well represented by the LEGO Ideas team, but I would have liked if they could have retained some illegal building tactics :P.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

And I thought the exosuit would be a crappy-set... Well after this animation, I'm ready to buy my first space set since the 6801 moon buggy!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Okay, way too excited for the public release now. Have to get one on release day before they sell out. Even tempted to get two...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Green spacepeople AND a turtle? Sold!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not really seeing where these revised instructions are or any mention of it. Did they remove the entire file or just the image?

The suit looks amazing, I will definitely be buying this as well as more pieces to build a lot of those little turtles.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

has the price been announced?

Gravatar
By in Norway,

British space people, that can only mean one thing.... a Doctor Who set is coming soon.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It looks incredible. I was a little afraid that they'd ruin the originality of the first design, but I'm proud of LEGO for what they've done. This is a set that I will undoubtedly buy.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^^ $34.99 so probably £29.99

Gravatar
By in United States,

Im definably buying. Might buy two. One to collect and one for parts and green space figs :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

WOW! So awesome! Everything is terrific, from the green classic space people to the look of the finished Exo-Suit . . . and especially the reveal video!!!!
Is this ushering in a new Classic Space Theme? Space Pirates? Seems like there is an open window for a new space theme with the retiring of the Galaxy Squad theme. . . Huw. . . any thoughts?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I will be buying 2 for sure. I really do hope they are producing it a large enough quantity. And hope it is indeed the beginning of a new space theme. How awesome would it be that a fan based idea launched a whole theme?!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I love it. The final model is amazing and the green minifigs are awesome. I really hope this doesn't turn into another Curiosity, I have a feeling this could be hard to get unless Lego learned from their mistakes.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, it looks better than I expected from the leaked arm image, and the green figs + turtle are instant win. It mostly looks great and faithful to the submission; I only have three quibbles. The use of grey barrels in the arms combined with the extra finger doesn't work for me; the reuse of the canopy technique from the Thunder Raider; and the extra greeble-spikes on top, which just don't work. I also don't think that's a suitable replacement for the tubing around the hips. A little modding, and this could go from incredibly good to outstandingly amazing. Great work, Mark Stafford! I also spy four new recolors: Green helmet and CS torso, LBG lampshade, and DBG 1x2 plate with single clip, introduced in 2013 in LBG. EDIT: And green airtanks!

I hope LEGO realizes there's more of a market here than the Mars Rover and implements a limit 3 per customer. Another 3 production runs like with BTTF would be great, too,

Happy 4th of July everyone!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The English accent on the astronaut seems a little far-fetched, but the green suits are nice. I must have those figs.

Gravatar
By in United States,

......NOT.........WORTHY!!!!!!!!!!
Oh my G-O-S-H, this is absolutely perfect! This thing will look great killing buggiods for my Galaxy Squad, or arresting outlaws in my SP3!!! One question though, does this come with WEAPONS? :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The whole package looks great. I'm not as worried as others seem to be about availability, BTTF and Ghostbusters have been made in much greater numbers than all the previous Cussoo/Ideas sets and have been available in most of the major outlets aswell (UK). I can definately see this as a multiple purchase for me so I can build the hanger scene from the video.
Great job all round.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

This looks fantastic. Great job by Pete and everyone involved. I'd like to buy several, not to re-sell but to use for figs and parts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I want to buy more so I can have more. :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@BrickSnorter:
Farfetched? Compared to what, the robot and giant mech suits in a moonbase?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Going to have to build an army of these

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@BrickSnorter I think have the designer as the voice is perfect

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Trandoshan, Yes absolutely a moon base and mech suit are more plausible.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I must say, I have been absolutely thrilled with everything regarding this set's reveal. The cryptic clues and now this stellar animation, as well as an absolutely spectacular LEGO set? Count me in, this is the way you involve and get your fan base excited, LEGO. :D First LEGO Cuusoo/Ideas set I thoroughly intend to purchase. (Also, adding the mecha-turtle is nice touch, love those little fellas!)

But, yeah, pretty excited, looking forward to release date.

EDIT: Forgot to mention this, but anyway, congratulations to Peter Reid, it would appear he's living every LEGO fan's dream right now. :D

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@BrickSnorter - As kevbags said, having the designer voice the main character in a film promoting the set seems like an ideal situation. If an American had designed it, I am certain that an American could have provided the voice.

I hope it does not detract from your enjoyment of the set too much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I had no interest in this set.
Notice the key word had?
The reveal was great, and the green space suits, two characters and a space turtle?? Yah, I have to get this now.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@CapnRex101, the designer as the voice may be "ideal" (at least cost-wise), but it nonetheless sounded odd to my ear. I would have said the same if the voice was in Kenyan, Mexican, North Korean, or any other country that hasn't had an interest in manned space flight. Oh, and no it doesn't detract from my wanting this set; I loved Dr. Who (especially Tom Baker) and Red Dwarf growing up. Also, I'm pretty sure Patrick Stewart is English and also the greatest Star Trek captain of all time.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LOL! This is the first time I have seen Huw start an article with OMG. Or write OMG at all! Where did that British reservedness go? But yeah, that's all there is to say; OMG! Take my wallet now! :D

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wow! I love this set! Two classic Lego cosmo/astronauts in GREEN! And of course a phenomenal looking exosuit which it is all about. I like the fact that it contain both a male and female minifig. The turtle robot is a nice bonus too.
I have not been tempted to buy any of the Cusoo/Ideas sets so far, though the BTTF as well as the Ghostbuster sets are pretty good too, but I will definitely be getting this Exosuit set when it comes out.

I would love to see more (neo) classic space Lego sets in the future, next to this Exosuit and Benny's Space ship.

Gravatar
By in Denmark,

Loving all of your reactions to this very special LEGO Ideas set. And as a CS fan it's been hard to keep the minifigs a secret...

Huw and Oscar, thanks again for the heads-up and for keeping the surprise under wraps. The reveal has been a lot more fun this way! :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't like mechs, I'm not particularly into Classic Space, and I had no trouble at all leaving the SPACESHIP! off my want list...but this is a must-have, and I might well buy two--one to keep pristine and sealed, and the other to play with and use for parts! The reveal sold it to me--great job of attracting my attention and helping me see what's so brilliant about the original design and its new, "legal" variation. I'm particularly impressed by the price tag--frankly, I had expected it to be almost twice the price Huw quotes! Great job by everyone involved--including Oscar and Huw for making sure the surprise wasn't spilled early!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@BrickSnorter, who knows who will be the global super power and leading the space race in 2564...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm sure every country has a chance to be at the top. *cough cough 'Merica cough* Ah well, it doesn't matter who's going to be at the top, as long as we get our LEGO Exo-Suits!!!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

@BrickSnorter
Who knows what kind of English accent space cruising extra terrestrial dwelling humans in five centuries from now will have, if they speak English at all?!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Be thankful its Romford twang, bit of broad Yorkshire, North Eastern or Glaswegian and the whole thing may have needed subtitles for international markets ;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Obi_G: Its like you read my mind! Even if I don't buy this (I probably will, since $35 is a reasonable price), I will definitely get the instructions and mod a Hulkbuster.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@kevbags, speaking of subtitles for international markets, be thankful it isn't with a strong Westcountry accent (which I speak fluently, I might add)! The video might have been completely different:

"'Ello ther, and 'ouse ye all doin' then? I got me a gert big clankin' machine out back, come up a pro'er treat, 'ee 'ave!"

Gravatar
By in Canada,

i like this version MUCH better than peter reids original verson! So much cooler!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

SOOOOOOO Gettin this set!

Gravatar
By in United States,

@arl100 - you've perfectly described the Killa Kan in the Warhammer 40k Dawn of War games...

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Huw, at the current pace of globalization and homogenization, we should be one world by 2564. By then, a united front may be the only way to defeat the sentient androids (with superior exo-suits). Either that, or everyone will just be half Chinese and half Latino :)

Oh, and happy Independence Day everyone in America (marking freedom from our British overlords)!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Should we expect a proper press release for this before it is released? Looking forward to seeing some alternate images.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@BrickSnorter, I'd be careful what you say, there are an awful lot of Brits on this form, just sayin :) . Other than that, I want to buy so many of these things! At first I didn't know what to think of the use of the grey barrel or the spines on top, but I'm perfectly fine with them now that I can see the result.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

I really like this set. It could be a nice additional to my soon expanding space base.
The green minifigs was a surprise.
With the presentation of this set and we first got Benny and his ship. then the white space guy set and now this. I feel there could be more coming. I hope !

Gravatar
By in Australia,

wowwww that is fantastic i really like the set and the animation was brilliant, i would love to have this set especially the added greatness of those classic space mini figures!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The box makes it look weird, but seeing it in closer detail in the reveal animation shows off its true awesomeness! Definitely a set I'm interesting in getting, and considering that my birthday is in August...

And also green minifigures; I love green. :3

Gravatar
By in United States,

soooo.... i think its safe to say everyone in this thread is going to get one, if not 3 (or more if they let us) its probably going to be 2 for me :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I may get a couple of these. Really cool.
...just a thought, but how much cooler would these new classic space figs look with trans yellow visors instead of clear?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I think that this article might just break Huwbot when it compiles the most viewed articles next week...

I love the set. Green classic spacemen!! If this turns into a theme, I would not complain in the slightest.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow! Awesome video and set. Have to get one of these.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Dragon_Master_48, I couldn't agree more. The position of the legs makes it a little off-putting. That and green is awesome. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

@T-Lars agrred

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Can't wait to get this. I am a huge fan of the Space sets from the '70s and '80s, but never have collected any, as there are some large prices on Ebay. I hope this will re-boot Classic Space! How great would purple spacemen be?!?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

there always has to be a female....seriously. There were no original female space models, so that is not an original look.

Gravatar
By in France,

@Mayors Corner Shop - How could you tell under those space suits and with helmets on? I never thought of them as male or female just base and spaceship crew members!

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

@Mayors Corner Shop
To be realistic, the classic Space didn't really give us identifiable female faces, and we don't have to assume all of them are guys. If the original creator accepts, it's not a bad direction.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

wow, i was not impressed with the original model. Had some boring colors.

But now that I've seen this pic, I really, really want it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Want it!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Well, the reason the female fig has a markedly female face is because the other face is obviously male-- it's the face of a male ninja! I do wish the figs had been fleshie, though. It would have been closer to the original proposal.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This one is the coolest set from Cuusoo/IDEAS themes, I think.
And the classic space minifigs with green suit ... it is a very unique notion and good idea.

Gravatar
By in United States,

August can't come soon enough, this is the first Ideas set that I'm really excited about :) I think because of the release of Benny's Spaceship and the Exo Suit, hopefully Lego might reboot Classic Space in the near future.

Gravatar
By in United States,

My Rule of Two has just been updated to a Rule of four, for this set. Nice!

Gravatar
By in United States,

YES, YES, YES!
