Random set of the day: CHI Cragger

Today's random set is 70203 CHI Cragger, released during 2013. It's one of 58 Legends of Chima sets produced that year. It contains 65 pieces, and its retail price was US$14.99 / £10.99, which equates to about US$21 / £15 in today's money.
It's owned by 1,776 Brickset members. If you want to add it to your collection you should find it for sale at Brick Owl, BrickLink, where new ones sell for around $29.90, or eBay.

I liked how the Constraction sets were utilized in the show as big holograms when the CHI was powering up the characters. Now if the characters transformed into the Constractions sets on CHI, that would have been something else which honestly still feels inline with Legends of Chima. That show was insane.

Oh, the gods of Chima. I loved these big figures. They were cool as hell.
They weren't all winners but I honestly think the chima constraction sets were probably the strongest case LEGO ever made for the idea that CCBS could be used for non-robotic characters. The stylization is done really well here.

I thought it might have just been because this guy’s a crocodile, who are all rough edges and sharp lines anyway, but they do pretty well at getting a great look for the mammalian characters too. It’s just the birds that come off worse I think

I think this might have been the first set to bring earth green back into CCBS. Only real time Olive Green appeared in a CCBS set too. In particular, I liked Cragger's head with the working jaw here, which was a level up over some of the other Chima characters single molded head. (The following wave of Chima CCBS figures were pretty good too, but it was a shame they were limited to a European only release.)

They were the only constraction sets that never really interested me, as I was was big into Bionicle from the beginning, enjoyed Hero Factory (although I never consumed any of the story material, just bought the sets), and bought several of the Star Wars Buildable Figures.
The shaping on this set is really well done. The minifigures were really cool (lots of prints and special elements like the heads and harnasses) but these CCBS figures showed off a lot better how anthropomorphic characters can be shaped. The hunched back goes really well with the staff and gives off a strong reptilian look.
Which is funny, because the Rahkshi from Bionicle coincidentally went for the same principles. I only now see the connection there!

My main gripe with the model is the literal bare bones of the lower extremities of the limbs. Those feel a bit scrawny for the character.

yeahh the wing builds for the birds never really worked, wave 2's were a little better but not by much.
