Review: 76350 Spider-Man vs. Hulk Epic Clash

Minifigures are often the priority in LEGO Super Heroes sets, sometimes to the detriment of the actual models. There are few examples as stark as 76350 Spider-Man vs. Hulk Epic Clash, which seems extraordinarily bland, particularly for the price of £79.99, $89.99 or €89.99.
There is something interesting about such a set, however, with a brilliant selection of minifigures and potentially an enjoyable function. Spider-Man: Brand New Day is out now, so it is time to examine one of the stranger Super Heroes sets of recent years!

Minifigures
Spider-Man features a new suit in Brand New Day, appropriately, so this minifigure is also new. The updated spider symbol on the torso looks superb and I like the blue details providing some muscle definition, though that shade of blue would arguably be more accurate for this particular suit than dark blue, considering its vibrancy onscreen.
Even the head has been marginally updated around the eyes, while the dual-moulded legs and printed arms look splendid, as always. To my surprise, the standard pack of web accessories is not included, although there are some other web parts attached to the model and the minifigure comes with a 1x1 round plate with bar to climb on walls and ceilings.
There is no shortage of villains in this set, but it seems Spider-Man's primary conflict is with the Hulk, who we have seen damaging the Department of Damage Control building in trailers. This version of the character is similar to others released recently, with olive green skin and separate head and hair elements, although his expression with gritted teeth is new.
The torn reddish brown trousers are unique too, seemingly based on concept art because they look darker onscreen and other toy companies did the same thing. While complete accuracy is ideal, relying on concept art sometimes results in compromises, so I cannot be too critical here.
Mac Gargan appeared briefly in Spider-Man: Homecoming in 2017 and takes on his Scorpion persona in Spider-Man: Brand New Day. The armoured suit is very detailed in shades of green and dark bluish grey, with small silver scratches and bolts on the back. I love the use of brighter green to give the impression of reflective metal.
The warm tan head looks nice as well, decorated with facial hair and Gargan's distinctive scar above his left eyebrow, which he acquired during the Staten Island Ferry scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming.
Of course, Scorpion's most important feature is his mechanical tail, which matches the colours on the minifigure, so it really seems like part of the suit. The tail is fully articulated and I like the use of a jetpack element to attach the tail, again cohesive with the mechanised attire.
Boomerang is a lesser known opponent of Spider-Man, but I am pleased he is included here, dressed in his dark blue garb from the film. Though a separate helmet piece would have been great, electing not to make a specialised element for such a minor character is understandable and I think the printed head works. The boomerang-like designs on the suit are a nice touch.
While not among his most recognisable foes, Tarantula seems like a natural enemy for Spider-Man! This version of the character is dressed in dark red and black, again covered with details on the torso and legs. The mask looks great too and I can imagine this versatile design proving adaptable for other characters.
It goes without saying that Boomerang wields a boomerang and keeps a couple more on his back, while Tarantula includes poison-tipped blades on his gloves and boots, represented by black spikes on the minifigure. Spikes are provided for his feet, attached via 1x1 round plates with hollow studs, but not pictured here.
An unnamed Hot Dog Vendor completes the group of minifigures, though I have seen people suggest the figure could be inspired by Hailey Cooper from the Spider-Man video games. This does seem plausible, given her hearing aid and vibrant clothes, which I doubt were a complete coincidence.
Regardless, the minifigure looks great, featuring a new torso and a detailed hair element often available in LEGO Friends. The head has appeared before, although only in four sets released before this one, so it remains uncommon.
The Completed Model
In contrast with the Department of Damage Control building, the hot dog cart provided is highly detailed. I like the stickered advertisements on the side and the sign on top, with a reference to 1962, the year of Spider-Man's introduction. Similarly, the blue accents look nice and the typical selection of condiments adds a little more colour.
The hot dogs and buns are kept in two containers, with trans-light blue doors on top. The door closer to the condiments is obstructed by the roof assembly, though it still opens far enough to reach the sausages inside. However, it could be tricky for a minifigure to reach them, given the relative size of the cart!
As a LEGO Star Wars fan, I have absolutely no aversion to grey. Nevertheless, this is probably the ugliest LEGO building released in recent memory. The onscreen tower is not very attractive either, but there is a way of adding architectural details to even a relatively bland building, which has simply not happened here. The few tan pieces are awkward and relying on masonry bricks for any texture whatsoever is poor.
This set is compatible with the Marvel street developed since 2025, with the familiar eight stud depth and Technic pins on each side. Unfortunately, the tower looks rather disappointing when connected to the likes of 76342 Spider-Man vs. Mysterio: The Daily Bugle, so much so that the DODC building honestly looks like a model from the early 2000s!
The windows are a particular issue, using trans-clear panels and therefore lacking any kind of frame or texture to delineate them from the walls. At least the door features the Department of Damage Control branding, albeit using a sticker, while the small park space adjoining the tower introduces some colour.
I am glad to see the pigeons available in another set because they have been relatively scarce thus far. The tree looks quite sparse, although I like the mix of colours and the lavender flowers underneath, plus the dark green bench. The armrests are especially effective, as they resemble wrought iron.
I like the sticker applied on this side of the building, packed with references to the prior Spider-Man films. Toomes Salvage is a company owned by Adrian Toomes or The Vulture, hence the company's neat logo, while Delmar's Deli-Grocery appeared in Spider-Man: Homecoming and Far From Home. J. Jonah Jameson appears on an advertisement for The Daily Bugle and the Mysterio graffiti refers to the villain's claim that Spider-Man betrayed him.
Three more stickers decorate the other side of the tower, including graffiti depicting a scorpion and a tarantula, plus a circular Spider-Man bumper sticker. A sticker is also placed on the door, which is needed because this is the only Department of Damage Control branding anywhere in the set.
The upper levels look especially bland, interrupted by webbing on the front of the building and another sticker on the side. Despite the lack of detail, the tower's general design is reasonably accurate to the movie, with a slight projection in the centre, so I suppose that is a positive.
You can see a lime green button in the photo above, used to collapse the front of the tower as Hulk emerges. The function does work, breaking the façade into four sections, although these pieces are weirdly uniform and leave behind a perfectly rectangular hole, so the damage does not look realistic or natural at all.
Perhaps I would be more forgiving of the building's appearance if the destruction feature was genuinely creative, but sadly not. There are multiple sets with similar functions, but the key to successful examples is usually leaving behind jagged edges or triggering a total and dramatic collapse, as with last year's 75638 Battle at Arlong Park. This set does neither.
There is a dedicated space for the Hulk to stand inside, surrounded by angled plates connected to clips and intended to resemble a smashed floor. This is quite effective, although I cannot help wondering whether they could have been designed to fold down and create a proper floor, which could then explode as part of the destruction function.
Such a feature would doubtless be difficult to integrate, but it would certainly be a lot more fun than the completely static interior we have instead. I like the uneven texture on the floor under the Hulk, although the gaps in the floor are unnecessary and they remain even when the walls are reattached.
Unusually, the box features no images focused on the interior, so I was concerned there would be no detail inside. That is not the case though, as the reception area actually improves on the prior Marvel buildings in some ways. I like the distinctive desk, using the new 6x6 curved slope created for 76354 S.H.I.E.L.D. Helicarrier, with devices flanking the door that the movie reveals to be metal detectors.
A couple of stud shooters are stored on a rack against the wall, which rather highlights the lack of DODC staff included to carry them. Their uniform already exists in 76349 Spider-Man Prison Transport Chase, so it would surely have been easy to add one here. There is even a stickered computer screen alerting the non-existent personnel to danger!
The floor above uses the age-old excuse of renovations happening to avoid the need for much furniture or detail, which I particularly associate with 10218 Pet Shop. The paint roller, sofa and tools look fine, but the building still has absolutely zero character, nor anything to do with DODC inside, to my disappointment.
Continuing further up the tower, these floors are empty, apart from the aforementioned angled pieces. There is nothing of interest on the roof either. Boomerang has evidently decided to tag the base of the antenna, but for me, putting the name of a character on a sticker is not enough to qualify as a reference or detail.
Having said all that, three curved minifigure supports are included and these are welcome, as they are helpful for posing characters around the tower, in conjunction with the web parts. You can even use them to capture the tower in mid-collapse, as I have in the image at the start and end of this review.
Overall
76350 Spider-Man vs. Hulk Epic Clash includes some superb minifigures, especially Scorpion, but apart from that, the word that comes to mind is embarrassing. I struggle to think of another set so lacking in detail or frankly so ugly. The park area and hot dog cart really seem like part of an entirely different set because they look good, in sharp contrast with the DODC building.
Its appearance might be excusable if the collapsing function was in some way remarkable, but this is actually one of the weaker destruction features I have encountered. The characters may be enough to justify purchasing the set at a substantial discount for some Marvel fans, but from my perspective, this is a set to avoid.

X-Force Deadpool when, LEGO?
Having seen the movie, I'm now disappointed because the actual building in the movie is a full on skyscraper.
This set is repulsive. And Punisher is missing in all brand new day sets.
I feel the need to compare it to 76057, which also managed a large scale battle between multiple special minifigs but fit in far more play features, personality and cute little references for not that much higher a price. Did fitting a bigfig in this really effect the pricing so much?
Yikes, this set looks pretty rough. Bland interior, bland exterior, overpriced….
Definite pass for me.
All of these Marvel street/mini modular sets have been disappointing, I think. Even the ones I like feel very expensive for what they are, and several of them have done poorly on detail and playability. (Additionally on detail: While I’m not keen on stickers I’m also not one to discount their contributions to a set’s looks, but in these sets they’re often so heavily reliant on stickers that they stop feeling like a fun extra and more like the main trick, which when Lego has so many other ways to do it ends up feeling almost lazy.) The gimmicks haven’t been particularly satisfying, either.
This one doesn’t even deliver on superficial facade looks. Not a good showing.
I want to like them! I think the concept is really good. The execution though… I had the first one on my wishlist for quite a while but even at a 30% discount I’d keep putting it off because it still felt like too much for what you get, and none of the subsequent additions have changed that.
Addendum: I do think that the artists and graphic designers have done an amazing job of the sticker/print graphics, it’s just a shame that energy wasn’t matched by the builds themselves.
I’m just hoping that the printing on Spiderman’s arms look that good in North America.
I wonder if we’ll get Punisher and Jean Grey figures later on? Perhaps in a smaller set down the line. I would love to get a Punisher van set.

Going by the film, I'm guessing the box will label him "Frank."
A few weeks ago I built the 10327 Dune Ornithopter....and somehow even that was a lot more colorful than this dreary abomination.....

These are pretty decent minifigures, and I can appreciate some of the updated designs.
But until Hulk puts on some purple trousers, he ain't no son of mine.

Somebody once wrote a list of "DC and Marvel characters with the same name" and it was shockingly long. Although Marvel does just have a regular "Boomerang," no rank.
This set looks horrendous. Just a giant grey brick. At first i thoguht the set was a building that was undergoing demolishment but no its supposed to be a regualr building which hapepns to be ugly grey. Even accounting for the hulk big fig, this is a bad as most other parts are tiny. The onyl nice thing is uironically the hotdog stand.
The onyl way this building might see any use is as a under cosntruction building in a lego city.

I can probably live without Boomerang and Tarantula but I do like that Scorpion, though not enough to ever consider this set. I’d rather my kids Marvel-up a current Icons/Ideas/Friends/City building.

But yes you’re right, one of the fun things about any standard building is you can just have your superheroes hang out there, it works fine. They don’t have to be Official Superhero Branded Buildings.

Mac Gargan was an objectively terrifying Venom, possibly more unhinged than Carnage.
Passenger at least tries to be heroic. Somewhat. Because Fun Fact II*: Boomerang has been Peter Parker's roommate, and has helped Spider-Man on more than one occasion. Fred Myers may be a cowardly weasel, but every now and then, his heart is in the right place.
Fred DOES NOT REQUIRE a symbiote in order to be interesting.

Yes, I got that, but it still doesn’t seem to fit the premise. Dax isn’t a lovable cowardly weasel and neither is Mac Gargan, and the combination seems unlikely to produce it.
Also, the humour of a symbiote that doesn’t want to come out and play and be a visible change to the entity they’re combined with is somewhat lost when applied to symbionts, which literally can’t do any of that. I’m just a little confused!

I was just like, oh come on. This is not too much to ask. At least give people a week to see the damn film.

I remember the blissful three years or so after Doctor Who got popular in America (at least in geek circles, which was all I cared about socially) and suddenly Americans everywhere were discovering that people could spoil *them*. They got much more respectful about spoiler warning for things everyone else couldn’t see yet for a while. Alas the lesson has since gone the way of the dodo.
I’ve stopped caring out of spoilers out of self-defence, on account of how long it takes for me to see things, but it’s still exasperating to see people with platforms be so careless about it. Clear sign of someone who cares more about clicks than anything else.
Any alternate build would look better than this. So might i end up with this set (and i really like Boomerang - although i love his old garb better) i will just build something from those pieces the lego way.
I even have issues with the hot dog cart being too big.
I thought this set looked potentially fun when it was revealed -- I love a good destruction feature and I thought maybe the interior would have some cool features not initially visible... so as a concept, I still like it!
The review shows that sadly in execution, it does seem disappointing. The lack of interior is almost shockingly bad and the destruction feature isn't great. I might end up buying it anyway but this is making me consider picking the tank and just bricklinking Scorpion and Boomerang.

That's one of the best sets Lego has ever produced, in any theme.
Great selection of minifigures and so much play and fun for kids.
The price though...ouch!

Having now seen the film, it is really insulting that The Punisher isn't in these sets seeing how much screen time he gets. Holding out the tiniest hope (but lets be honest it isn't going to happen) that they do one more set with him and Saddie Sink's character included.
Very fragile, it falls apart too easily without needing any help from the Hulk. If this set had the usual 800 pieces maybe the architecture could be made more interesting and detailed.
Why do I get the feeling that there'll be a lot of copies of this on Bricklink sans minifigures soon?

Occasionally I do silly “skits” with photos & short videos (I’d do stop motion if I had the spoons but such is life) and combining superhero minifigs with random bits of scenery and confused civilians is basically always a good time.
