Quick look: 40896 The X-Files: Scully's Lab

One of the most anticipated releases today is 21369 The X-Files and if you're quick off the mark buying it at LEGO.com you'll receive 40896 The X-Files: Scully's Lab as a gift with purchase.
We weren't sent the large set to review, but the GWP arrived yesterday, so let's find out if it's worth acquiring it while you can.

An excellent accompaniment to the large X-Files set, but not an essential one

The set was provided for review by LEGO. All opinions expressed are those of the author.
The 221-piece set is a sizeable model, sitting upon a 16x18 base, and it's packed with details. On the back wall there are storage cupboards above a worktop with a sink, and on the left, a small desk with a microscope.
An autopsy table occupies the centre of the model, illuminated by a lamp from above.
I particularly like the sunken sink and the clever way the cupboards are constructed, using four 3x4 window frames which surround shelves stacked with lab equipment and potions.
There's not much to see round the back, other than a fly tile on the floor, but it's neat and tidy.
This minifigure version of Dana Scully is attired in white a lab coat with light blue scrubs underneath and latex gloves. It's a shame the lab coat printing is not extended onto her legs, but otherwise it's a nice figure.
It shares the hairpiece with the one in the large set, but not the head. This one has protective glasses on one side and a worried expression on the other.
My only complaint is that it's a shame that an alien to dissect on the table is not included: you need to buy the large set to get one, which is of course requisite for acquiring this one, so perhaps it doesn't matter.
Other than that, it's an excellent accompaniment to the large set, but not an essential one. If you're going to buy 21369 The X-Files, you might as well do so now to obtain it!

This looks great! I have ordered the main set and the GWP, and looking forward to receiving them.
I'm just hoping they survive the delivery experience, as TLG never put packing material inside boxes, and so items bash against each other in transit...
It would have been nice to have an additional minifigure included, but it does spark the creative urge to add a body from our own collections.
My preference would have had a alternate Spooky-Mulder with sunflower seeds included.

I was going to say, if you don't have an alien minifigure a Homer Simpson will do just fine.
This is one of the best-looking GWPs I've ever seen. I kind of love it, even if the subject-matter is a little bit morbid for TLG.

Does Brickset consider this GWP an IDEAS set?
There are no IDEAS logos on the box like there was with the Goonies GWP.

Personally, I preferred the non alien episodes of the series, they were much more interesting.
This makes me think of Buck Teeth, one of my favourite episodes.
Although the lone gunmen office would equally be as good, with the lone gunmen.

I usually get a whole paper towel worth of butcher paper in my orders.

Ah, The Stonecutters. That takes me back. Wouldn't it be great if TLG released a Stonecutter Lodge set, complete with long table, and a who's who of lodge members. Not forgetting a Stone of Shame, Stone of Triumph, and plenty of paddles.

Infection control is one thing. That's why the fly is on the outside of the autopsy room.

This one reminds me of 40531 and I like both of them very much.
The old fashion alien autopsy room....it needs a Zoidberg and deviled egg.
I knew I was saving my Insiders points for something, and here it is!
Negative point: Should not be a GWP, and should be either a purchasable set or attached to the actual set fro the same price.

Pity there’s no Smoking Man (for obvious reasons) or Eugene Victor Tombs in the main set, but can’t have everything I guess.
Great to see Gillian Anderson in the promo shots!
Must be the lab from 'Je Souhaite' so the invisible man is on the slab.

The Cigarette Smoking Man is in the main set, he’s just under his character’s name instead, and you’d have to track down a cigarette accessory elsewhere.

You can take what Lego is calling "outer cable" (this name should be changed since the flex cables that used to go inside do not exist anymore). Element ID 6365707 - there might be smaller ones available . I have plenty of them in all colours; I will pick a white one and cut it at 1.5 stud length.
The other viable option is Element ID 6357680 Design ID 78258 but that will be a bit long.
The outer cables are also available in medium nougat and reddish brown for those who need cigars for their One Piece set.
Is the fly a reference? When I first caught a glimpse of it I thought it was a bee, which would be a more obvious reference to some of those story arcs and the movie.

I could be entirely off base, but a bit of searching turned up the episode Lord of the Flies which does indeed seem to have a fair bit of fly involvement, so perhaps that?
I would buy this just for the cute lab and the fact Scully makes a cute minifigure. Haven't watched "The X-Files" yet.

This is regional. UK orders — and I assume at least some mainland European orders since mine always come from Poland — only have the outer box, no paper. I emailed them asking about it once after the courier apparently decided to play football with the box, much to the detriment of the sets inside, and they said it was part of their commitment to low waste in Europe. Which I wasn’t all that impressed by considering I can just recycle a bit of paper packaging, but that’s what they said, and the partial refund and free insider points were nice enough.
(Although it’s been about a year since my last direct order so maybe they have caved and started adding paper. One can but hope.)

Although it is still available at the LEGO Shop, the Disney Store is also offering the LEGO Ideas The X-Files Scully’s Lab (40896) with purchases of $130. You can pretty much add any general item and have your cart have $130 or more, then use the code ACCESS during checkout to get it. The items do not have to be LEGO but the downside is that you don’t get any Insiders points towards the LEGO Shop. The offer ends on August 11, while supplies last.
Sold out already. Ridiculous prices on ebay as a result...
