By in United States,

Is this the first time we've gotten a minifigure scale Red TARDIS in a set?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Very nice, but a bit steep. £330 would have been about right

Gravatar
By in South Korea,

Is it possible to display Gringotts, Diagon Alley, & Ministry on the same shelf? They all have different levels.

Also while i'm here, the chinook from 6597 is life changing!

Gravatar
By in United States,

It really is a shame.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Interesting build but I'll stick to 76403, which also had a better selection of minifigs imo. This one sure looks more impressive but the whole section at the top feels unnecessary and everything at the back of the main thing looks so crammed.

Gravatar
By in Slovenia,

The set looks fine, but its price is horrific, when you compare it to Gringotts and Diagon Alley.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Am I the only one in fear of it tipping over?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'll be pillaging the parts list and instructions for the phone booth, but beyond that?

To hell with this set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Absurd price tag

Gravatar
By in United States,

Shame on LEGO for the price- $450 is riddikulus.

10316 Rivendell and 76269 Avengers Tower are both only $50 more than this.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

All I am happy is that we are getting LYNX mold.
This is another confirmation of the leak of CITY forest Police <3

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Well, this is. Or at least, it's going to be.

I like that phonebooth. Not enough to spend the additional 415 Euros, but you know, it's a very cool phonebooth. I daresay it is nearly... EXCELLENT *sick guitar riff*.

No functional lifts or trapdoors from toilet or few levels descending phone booth? Where is any playability? Department of mysteries feels also very bland... Previous regular set was better..

By in United Kingdom,

I’m so, so close to packing Lego in as a hobby. It’s just ridiculously expensive to the point where it’s not fun anymore.

Still, can’t wait to have all the usual LAN members who get this for free tell me how awesome it is.

How many times do we see people being Chicken Little with the prices of LEGO on here? With that said, these prices, especially as of late, are concerning for the future.

Having checked the link, this appears to be the first *good* red TARDIS.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Isn’t the entire design mostly a facade? I’m not surprised they didn’t include a side view as the entire structure seems to be only 10 studs deep, extending to 13 studs on the top level. That price seems extremely hard to justify.

Gravatar
By in United States,

A swing and a miss, IMO.

They tried to include too much, which greatly compromises the end result. It's also at least $100 too expensive.

Also: making an expensive Ministry set and then not including the Minister of Magic is kind of insane.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Less than 3,500 pieces
$450

??????????????

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

There's some good here, but not for that price. I'm sure people will just buy the Cornelius Fudge banner separately and add it to the 2022 version.

Also, while Richard Harris is generally the more beloved version of Dumbledore, there was no excuse to put him in this set. Firstly, it's inaccurate, as the Ministry only appears in OotP and DHp1, and by that point, Harris had long been recast. And, in my opinion, using the Richard Harris Dumbledore in this particular set is both lazy and an insult to the memory of Michael Gambon.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

It appears to be a bog standard red telephone box (see set 21347) rather than a blue Police Box. They are substantially different beasts.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The price gouging is so absurd anymore. The Diagon Alley set, with 17 characters and 4 very nice and well done buildings - cost $450 and had over 5500 pieces!! And still available end of last year.

This is 2000, yes two thousand LESS pieces, fewer minifigures (I see 13ish? - oh 14 confirmed) and costs the same price for one overly tall building. GIGANTIC no thanks LEGO. :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

$450 for this is obscene. Lego, you've lost the plot, my friend.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not entirely convinced that so many minifigures were required in this set. I don't see many functions or playability in this set. They've tried to cram so much, maybe too much here. I understand the need to include the addition of the London street up above. Honestly, it's not necessary because the London buildings look so small and squat. They're silly the phone booth is cool.

Gravatar
By in France,

It looks good but OMG the price hike compared to previous HP sets of this type.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I hope the LSW designers take note…

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

What happened to the cool spells from 76415 ? Yes I know that part retired.
No hoods or capes for our death eaters and the same torso as 76459

Gravatar
By in United States,

Thank god there's no set-exclusive GWP tied to this. No reason to pickup at anywhere near full price. 30 percent discount when it flops I will consider it.

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

Whopping AUD700 / NZD800

Personally, I'd rather spend US$400 on the Hogsmeade Village. Or US$500 for another Rivendell or Avengers Tower.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Who is that Death Eater? Dolohov?

Gravatar
By in Spain,

So, the Ministry of Magic without the Minister of Magic? I mean Fudge, not Shacklebolt.

Gravatar

@lekalog said:

There is a specific GWP (not a set) for this.... Yet to be revealed.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

430€ for this dollhouse?! And they couldn't even tile off the main floor of the MoM?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Collectors' Edition Harry Potter sets have been excellent up till now. I loved last years 76457 Hogsmeade Village - Collectors' Edition, but practically being a Winter Village set helped that!
This years just feels a bit mediocre. Might get it if it's reduced in a couple of years. But not before.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

This set is in the wrong price bracket.

the big Hogwarts Castle -> spectacular set
the big Hogwarts Express -> spectacular set
the big Gringotts Bank -> spectacular set

This thing is big but not spectacular. Quite impressive, maybe, though I think it looks jumbled together, but certainly not spectacular. It's a bloated version of what could have been a cool €180 set.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Just noticed... it's a bit strange they included Sirius Black for what is basically his death scene but not Bellatrix, who's apparently replaced by some random Death Eater without a mask.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Historically Harry Potter sets have been pretty well priced. Not only is this overpriced it doesn’t look great either for what the price is.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Reminds me of the minifigure selection in 75397 Jabba's Sail Barge, and (sarcastically) the quote from Jurassic Park - "We spared no expense."

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would've been cool to include Albert Runcorn, Mafalda Hopkirk, and Reg Cattermole as well, especially for that price.

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the coolest parts of the Ministry of Magic is getting to the Ministry of Magic. A simple drop toilet in the wrong location won't do.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Pricing and qualitiy and quantity of minifigures are outrageous.
Lego company still testing out, how many middlefingers they can give us. A shame. :/

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I actually rather like this, but question: why does the Dumbledore appear to be based on the Richard Harris version and not Michael Gambon? I was quite fond of those long hair/beret pieces they did for him.

The station and phone box are magnificent though.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Same here. Couldn't care less about the set, but that classic telephone box is a must have.

Gravatar

Wow, this is an impressive build.

Gravatar
By in United States,

LEGO loves shooting themselves in the foot with these prices…..

Gravatar
By in United States,

One of the most visually stunning locations in the films and this is what we get? That price is absolutely shameful, too. This style of build would be amazing for a MOC but for a $450 official set it kind of looks awful.

Nothing about this set is collectors’ quality yet it comes at a price higher than both Diagon Alley and Gringotts. These big Harry Potter sets used to be really impressive display pieces and they just keep going downhill. Last year’s Hogsmeade was a step down from Diagon Alley but still had a lot of good elements. Then we get a set like this where the designers couldn’t even bother to tile over the floors or include a minifigure of the Minister for Magic himself.

I much preferred Gambon to Harris. Gambon’s Dumbledore was much cleverer. Harris’ felt like a performance that was based only on the first few books, before things took a dark turn and Dumbledore had to actually take a more active role in the story. Harris certainly fit with the way Columbus was directing the first two films, but I always felt the movies didn’t really hit their stride until Year 4, after which the tone of those first two films would have been wildly inappropriate, and Harris would have felt out of place, having been cast before anyone knew where the story was ultimately headed. If he truly is more beloved, I have a strong suspicion it’s because he was first, not because he was best. Try to imagine him performing the scene in the cave, the duel in this specific scene, or the moments leading up to Dumbledore’s murder, and tell me if you still think his was the better portrayal for the story.

That said, it is truly bizarre that they included the wrong face. I can’t place the outfit in any of the eight films, but I’m guessing that’s also inaccurate. To date, I can’t remember them mixing up the two versions, but I know a few sets (primarily certain years of the HPAC, and the two CMF waves) have had a bit of leeway in which version was selected for production.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I think this set looks ridiculous! Hahaha! I think it should be pinned against the wall to prevent falling over by accident. That phone booth is only mediocre. I have the Dr. Who phone booth.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is that a new gold tricorn? If that comes in black could be useful for Pirates..

Other than that, I like the set. I like aspects of it. I don't like $450 worth of it though. I may have to see which versions of the figures I want and modify the older smaller set a bit.

I'm thankful LEGO does this so often. My bank account needed a break anyway.

As a single income household with several little ones, I definitely feel your pain. But I think it's important to incorporate some nuance here. LEGO is currently releasing more adult focused sets and those sets tend to be larger and more expensive. And since these sets often speak to me, I get distressed because I simply can't afford to get them all.

I skipped my first modular ever, the wonderful BTAS art, and Dungeons & Dragons, each of which I would have normally planned to buy. But with the Bricklink Designer Program and continuing great sets across so many other themes, something simply has to give. I'm a lifelong Trekker too but have so far been unable to pull the cord on either Star Trek set. :o(

But we should try and keep things in perspective as there are still more than 350 sets released SO FAR this year less than $50.

I wondered about that too, and the character in the blue cap. I wish Lego would give us a clearer picture of the minifigure lineup with names on the box, or at least list them all out in the description instead of just hitting up the A-listers on big sets like this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Given the price per piece ratio here, I think it's fair to say every character from the requisite scenes should have been included. Not bothering to remold the cap piece for Dumbledore's hair, or, more shockingly, simply printing an updated face, is really really bad minifigure-wise, but we also should have gotten at least Bellatrix and Fudge. It's odd to include Ms. Figg but not Fudge. Amelia Bones and/or Scrimgeour would have been nice as well.

Gravatar

Want to get it but probably have to skip it because cost to get it will be half of this set. I expect horrendous secondary market prices on that gwp. gwp thresholds are so absurd now, you can get every ucs, modular, hp collector set several times over to get them all. I get why lego does it. Lego doesn't have logistics so they need to sell high margins. otherwise they would have price matched amazon ages ago

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ouch. There are a lot of things I like about it, but it's at least £100 overpriced. More expensive than Gringotts, but with 1300 fewer pieces, and the appearance of shortcuts all over the place.

- No tiling on the floor
- Dumbledore looks like Richard Harris instead of Michael Gambon
- No special effect elements for the Dumbledore-Voldemort battle
- Lots of more interesting characters missing, like Cornelius Fudge, Bellatrix, Augustus Rookwood

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ooh, the lynx is pretty cool, hopefully it weasels it's way into city sets

Gravatar
By in United States,

In fairness, this is a difficult location to encapsulate in a LEGO set, with the grand scale of it and the multiple levels. That said, I feel there were too many compromises in the design here—lack of functionality, lack of depth, large open section in the middle—and the price is hard to justify.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm definitely intrigued but I'm going to need to see more of it first. The bar has been unfortunately (fortunately?) set pretty high after 76417 Gringotts and 76454 Hogwarts Castle: The Main Tower.

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Big set but not as impressive as the Gringotts one.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

I don't see the value...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Not sure when I will purchase this. I already have a backlog of HP sets on my wish list so plenty of older sets to qualify for the GWP. May wait it out on this to see what offers may come around the holidays. As of now I see no urgency to buy on day one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I’ve been mulling over emailing them & being respectful….as I can…about this pricing structure they’re on. I know it’ll very likely be for naught, but I’m still going to let them know how close they are to pricing out a loyal, near 20 year customer. I encourage others to do the same. And just maybe if enough do it’ll be at least something they think about in the future.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The writing's been on the wall for Harry Potter sets the last few years, they're only targeting the older fans with large disposable income and look past JK Rowling (which turned most younger fans away, like me... someone who read the books as a kid and watched the movies as they came out).
In no conceivable timeline does the theme market to kids when the current Hogwarts costs $850+ even ignoring the classrooms, with most sets being above $50 and leaning past $100... so this just exemplifies that strategy to the nth degree lol.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I imagine a reply to my sternly-worded electronic mail would probably be something along the lines of

"Dear Crux,

In closing, hahaha.

Love and kisses,

TLG

PS: LOL"

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow. This just might be one of the most overpriced sets of all time. It's actually shocking and pathetic how poor of a value this is compared even just to other sets within the HP theme. I know TLG doesn't care and sadly it'll probably still sell, but something has to give eventually. They can't keep pricing out their customers like this, and that goes for basically every company that exists today.

Gravatar

TLG has an unfair advantage as the manufacturer, so they can’t be perceived as undercutting their retail partners on price or risk losing those markets. The 5% rebate offered through the VIP program skirts that by affecting your subtotal at checkout, not the list prices in individual products.

No, if they match Amazon, they would automatically be undercutting anyone else who hasn’t. Those retail partners are, by far, more valuable to them than direct sales.

Yeah, many of the mainline sets are too expensive to really justify. What keeps me in the hobby is my MOCcist tendencies; since I build most of what I want custom, I only buy a few kits that I really want or occasionally grab some others on sale. I can still do plenty with what I already have and can often supplement the major things I lack moderately affordably given time.

Also, I don't have enough space to justify basically any of the big display sets these days; I made an exception for Baratie, but that's it. That helps me save a lot.

I concur. But, if I’m understanding correctly, @BionicleGuard, the issue is that inflammatory off-topic comments have frequently caused comment sections to get shut down. Rarely do they get reopened once that happens. In some cases, this response was weaponized to force the comments to be shut down. There are no threads in this system, so either comments are open, or they are not. There’s also no post count limit that I’m aware of, though there’s a point where an inactive comment section appears to automatically close based on when the most resent post was submitted (so new activity before that point is reached can keep the comment section alive for a little longer). Does that answer your question(s)?

Does that answer your question(s)?"

Everything so far has been on-topic though.

"Lego doesn't have logistics so they need to sell high margins. otherwise they would have price matched amazon ages ago"

TLG has an unfair advantage as the manufacturer, so they can’t be perceived as undercutting their retail partners on price or risk losing those markets. The 5% rebate offered through the VIP program skirts that by affecting your subtotal at checkout, not the list prices in individual products.

They don't even try. They could match prices without undercutting anyone, but they don't."
"

No, if they match Amazon, they would automatically be undercutting anyone else who hasn’t. Those retail partners are, by far, more valuable to them than direct sales."

those retailers like amazon, walmart, costco effectively order in extreme bulk getting a bigger discount per item. Then they do massive dumps where discounts are so severe, they can be cheaper than the aliexpress knockoffs. They make money in end by driving spenders to amazon vs other sites. Lego wins in end because they make more if amazon buys way more from them. so yeah i partially agree

There is a reason why gwp thresholds are so absurd, you are effectively buying a d2c set just to get one. lego doesn't have the employees or infrastructure to sell at amazon volumes.

Like if timmy has $1k to spend, but amazon does a prime day sale, he is more likely to buy those discounted amazon sets than the 1k death star. despite the death star holding more valuable and being way easier to sell if he is in an emergency. A cheap lego set can be added with a phone charger for free shipping.

"Wow. This just might be one of the most overpriced sets of all time. It's actually shocking and pathetic how poor of a value this is compared even just to other sets within the HP theme. I know TLG doesn't care and sadly it'll probably still sell, but something has to give eventually. They can't keep pricing out their customers like this, and that goes for basically every company that exists today."

they do this because they are not a loss leader and need absurd margins. If you think this is bad, look at the thresholds of the gwps which are just investor bait. The thresholds you need to basically buy a d2c set just to get it. don't get me started on tcgs, where mtg has like recently released 1k collector boxes

By in Australia,

I think this is the first UCS Harry Potter set that is an easy skip for me. It's not a particularly attractive build (to me that is) and at $700 AUD there are many other sets of lesser value those precious funds can go towards. $700 may just cover the bill for all the botanicasl that have come out so far this year (probably not, there really have been so many!). Don't get me wrong, I love Botanicals, but boy have they released so many recently, can't keep track :p

By in United Kingdom,

Dumbledore looks far more like Harris than Gambon in this set… why? We’ve had great Gambon Dumbledores before, albeit only a very small number, but they were much, much better than this.

Meanwhile the price is unusually high even by current standards for similar sets, which is baffling to me as it doesn’t seem particularly appealing and doesn’t launch with a set exclusive or particularly desirable GWP.

I’ll happily pick up Dolohov and Figg at some point to add to the collection, but even as someone who owns nearly every other large HP set, this just doesn’t really appeal to me.

I usually don’t chime in on this and do take it elsewhere, but your last comment misses the point. I DO come to brickset to relax, and seeing this stuff makes it harder. To see you hand waving away valid comments because they don’t belong here doesn’t make them less valid, despite understanding the discourse guidelines. Maybe don’t be so quick to “gotcha” your users.

Anyways When I want to relax I don’t usually click on your advertisements for new HP sets, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t still a reminder to former fans of HP when we are trying to engage with other stuff on the site.

On other websites I can tailor my feed to not see this stuff. Makes it easier to relax.

Germany also often sees huge discounts on LEGO sets these days as the products appear to be less popular than in the past. It varies by region of course, but discounts of between 35 and 50% are quite common on many sets.

It was likely never as good here as folks abroad were told. But whatever good it was greatly evaporated with the downfall of TRU and the surge in LEGO popularity. We basically have had zero opportunity to get any discounts on LEGO Exclusive sets the past 10+ years. We can see 20% off some sets from some standard themes at Target, Amazon, Costco, etc., …if we wait a while. Clearance on standard themes happens but is likely just 30%, is unadvertised, quickly comes/goes, and is often grabbed all up by resellers in offline/off-hour deals with store employees..

Interesting, especially the part about the "surge in LEGO popularity". Because over here it's kind of the opposite. LEGO used to be extremely popular, but appears to be on a sharp decline. Maybe it's overexposure, product fatigue and/or the extremely expensive RRPs, coupled with the rising awareness of alternative brands - or a combination of factors. In any case, the trend is noticeable enough and is reflected in the huge discounts necessary to shift products.

"Nowadays I only get Lego sets at heavily discounted prices, never at full retail.

Just bought Creel house 2 days ago for $150.

Earlier this year gotten Shopping Street at $165, Mercedes AMG G63 & SL63 at $28, Ancient Moon Gazing Inn at $85, Fountain Garden at $54, Holiday Express Train at $75, Fortune Firecracker at $37, Vincent Van Gogh Sunflowers at $75, plus 100s of others from previous years.

Just don't be a FOMO and Lego will eventually come down in price. "

Those are great finds, congratulations! Unfortunately, not every region sees discounts like those."

I understand US and Canada have stores like Cosco with regular clearance sales on Lego sets? Also Lego.com and Amazon in US sometimes have discounts that are even higher than what I've paid, though I think the price is pre tax? My prices all inclusive of local tax and shipping (if any)."

In the past I was under the impression that the best deals were to be had in the US, with users often mentioning clearance sales at Costco, Target, Walmart etc. with almost unbelievable prices.

Germany also often sees huge discounts on LEGO sets these days as the products appear to be less popular than in the past. It varies by region of course, but discounts of between 35 and 50% are quite common on many sets. "

Clearance on standard themes happens but is likely just 30%, is unadvertised, quickly comes/goes, and is often grabbed all up by resellers in offline/off-hour deals with store employees.."

Revenue/Profit continue to set records so YMMV, I guess."

I don't doubt that. After all, the profits posted by TLG are not affected by the heavy discounts that the retailers have to bear.
Also I would be interested in the detailed sales numbers for the various regions and the development of those over the years. After all, analysing such numbers is my day job even though it's the in a different industry.

"I’m so, so close to packing Lego in as a hobby. It’s just ridiculously expensive to the point where it’s not fun anymore.

Still, can’t wait to have all the usual LAN members who get this for free tell me how awesome it is."

This.

And, almost no significant minifig printing either.

2 years back some of our TRU stores were dumping the 76156 Rise of The Domo at $36 and 76155 In Arishem's Shadow at $22, though it lasted less than a day before flippers scooped them all up. You're right that these offers do come and gone pretty quickly, some of them like the recent local Amazon sales gone within 2 hrs or so. I happen to have plenty of free time so can afford to monitor local Lego groups, online stores etc on a daily basis to hopefully catch these offers at the right place at the right time.
