LEGO DC 76355 Batman Returns Batmobile revealed!

Looks very nice except those colorful parts when it splits. It will need to get Ornithopter treatment when I'll get it

no GWP, should have been penguin toy batmobile controller he sits in when driving, or maybe the duck.
Also the side pod wheel should retract into the body.

This was a terrific scene from the movie, which I saw in the cinema when I was 4 years old after watching "Batman" (1989) countless times on a VHS tape, although a detail has always bothered me while growing up: how did the Penguin's remote control device fit under the chassis, while it didn't have much ground clearance… All right, I know there are many more things to nitpick about this film (though not as many as in "Batman Forever" or — god forbid — "Batman and Robin"), but this was an obvious mistake.

Anyway, I look forward to purchasing this set (hopefully discounted after a few months) and building it, especially since I've never had the courage to build 76139 for avoiding it being covered in dust (which is why I've kept the Batwing in a plastic bag after completing it, which I never do for any set…).

I like this one alot wish they'd Done the same as what we got in the 89 one and gave us A Penguin, Selina and Max Shreik or Alfred.

And the fact he has Leg Printing.

I wonder if they took inspiration from the bootleg minifigs for the large cape/cowl piece with this Batman. It is pretty common among unlicensed products but quite unconventional for an official minifig.

At second glance though I noticed the piece count being a good but lower than the 1989 set. And indeed, the car is about 25% smaller..... that's not great if you have both. And I guess it will also be smaller scale than the Adam West version?

The color puke when you split it also is annoying, though I guess its all about that middle section.

Really looking forward to comparison reviews with 76139. This, like so many other sets this year, looks great.

No thanks. 76188 and 76328 are the only Batmobiles I need (unless they make 76328 with better shaped wheel arches at some point)

Honestly, as awesome as this looks, I've only got so much money and so much space. (And they're being reserved for the Daily Planet. Don't let me down LEGO...)

Frequently people complain about retired sets and bringing back older modulars. But then LEGO releases another Batmobile similar to one from seven years ago and there is outrage.

To be fair, there are a LOT of Batmobiles, but it is interesting. I don't care either way.

I have 76139 1989 Batmobile and think it's great. I like this version to scale far better with the Icons movie cars like 10274 Ecto-1 and 10300 DeLorean. Only have a single minifigure is really poor form from LEGO.

Nice, a Batmobile from the best Batman film. Still pretty expensive but a good piece count and a nice feature, and the minifig looks good.

Buuuuuuuuttt... Could really do with two more minifigs, would be perfect for a Catwoman and a Penguin to go alongside Bats. The 'transformation' feature is cool but the coloured bricks inside are a bit off-putting, and I feel like the fact you have to add the details to the wheels after is a bit clumsy.

For those who don't remember, I believe this version of the Batmobile doesn't "pop open" in the film like the set, but it stretches itself out and puts the wheels in a line like a giant roller blade to go through a narrow gap. My memory may be faulty on that though.

The question is, how much more black could it be?

This is a very good set on its own merits, even if it suffers by comparison with 76139. However, it does have two valuable refinements in shape compared to the previous version: the back fins now flare outward from the back of the cockpit to the rear of the car, which they didn't before, and the cowling around the jet engine is now angled backward, which it wasn't before. Those are pretty important improvements IMO.

is LEGO aware that other DC characters also have iconic vehicles and setpieces? at this point they might as well change the branding from "LEGO DC" back to "LEGO Batman"

It's good, no doubt, but I am happy to own 76139 (and the associated GWP), which is still my favourite Batmobile.

Separation function aside, 76139 is a better looking set in my opinion. On the other hand, it's always cool to have another Batman.

I like this one too but now comes the time when I don't have room any more to display them all... I wish I would buy it though. Very nice minifig by the way.

I have the 89 one and along with the 60’s Batmobile, they are the only 2 I care about. I just don’t need this.

Regarding the "best" Batman film. Even though it's not my favorite, The Batman is probably the best interpretation of the darker batman comics IMO. I really enjoyed it and I look forward to the sequel.

I'm really in two minds. I have 76139 so do I really need a slightly smaller version of the same vehicle that has clearly been compromised in order to incorporate a transformation feature into a vehicle we never really get a good look at in the film itself? That Batman minifig with the new cowl is fantastic, though.

I don't much care for the Batmobile itself, but I love the figure with the cape around his shoulders. That looks cool.

Very nice however I think the original 1989 Batmobile is more impressive. I'll try to own both.

Again, pretty sure neither the Batman Returns nor the Dark Knight ejection transformations are even physically possible, nevermind being able to make them work in a LEGO set. In this case, the cockpit of the Batmissile in the film is a distinctly different shape than right before the sides eject. That’s not even getting into the whole issue of how it could turn without using the tow cable trick from 1989.

MotP was a feature film developed as a direct-to-video tie-in to B:TAS, but turned out so good that they ended up giving it a very short theatrical release beforehand. It debuted during the Christmas holiday season, and was only up for maybe a few weeks (I do remember watching it with friends from college, so it must have played at least two weeks), and by the time many people even heard it was on the big screen, they’d missed their chance (including Siskel & Ebert). It’s a very loose adaptation of Batman: Year Two, with the Phantasm subbed in for the Reaper from the original graphic novel, but you’ve got all of the relevant B:TAS cast including Kevin Conroy, Mark Hamill, and Efram Zimbalist Jr.

I liked the look of 1989 Batman, but don’t like the soundtrack, and kinda soured on Nicholson’s Joker after I started reading Batman comics. Returns I liked the best out of that quartet, but I picked up a copy a few years ago and aspects just haven’t aged well.

I watched a documentary on the Batman film rights, and it turned out the studio meddled too much on 1989 to the point that Burton doesn’t really like it, and there were other issues with Returns. Pfeiffer’s hyper-sexualized Catwoman is one thing, but DeVito’s Penguin creeping on every woman he encounters is just hard to watch now.

MotP, being produced by the same team as B:TAS, has a very strong comic book pedigree, is kid-friendly, but still hits pretty hard for adults. Conroy and Hamill are regularly at the top of the list for Best Batman and Best Joker, and anyone who watched the series already knows they don’t have to worry about casting, writing, or directing. Conroy is also the Batmaniest Batman who ever Batmanned, not only having more screen credits, but probably also more screentime, than anyone else who wore the cowl or voiced the Caped Crusader.

Garbage. And also the reason the Batman franchise almost died before I was even born. The guy who owns the film rights talked in that documentary about how the 66 series basically inspired him to acquire the film rights, just so he could prevent that from happening again. The problem with Two-Face is that, unlike most other supervillains, his origin story has him being created by another villain (basic mob boss, in the comics, rather than the Joker). And when you consider the fact that a superhero is only as interesting as their rogues gallery, once you get past the origin story, pairing up two villains lets you hang more of the plot on the villains without overusing any single villain. At least six Batman theatrical films have had two named supervillains. The only problem I see with putting Two-Face in TDK is he gets overshadowed by Ledger’s Oscar-winning Joker. But his origin story fits very well with the version of Joker that Nolan created.

People just prefer the soundtrack to 'Batman Forever', I don't know what to tell you, because there is so much I could tell you. So much I could say.

BAY-BEH, I COMPARE YOU TO A KISS FROM A ROSE ON THE GREY, OOH

Rearrange title to Batman's Batmobile Returns, although at 45cm shorter than previous 61cm for 76139 so some loss of detail, but the roller-skates and train wheel are clever detailing. The break-away sides is a cool feature, and as mentioned there are improvements with the angled engine inlet and tapered fins plus custom cockpit window, for those who don't already own 76139.

Oh well! This is my favorite Batmobile shape. But I still haven't built 76139-1. Yes, I know... It's on my shortlist of what to build next. I may eventually, perhaps, under some circumstances also buy this one here. Though it feels a little unnecessary for me, owning the other one.

According to Michael Uslan (who owns the film rights) in an Icons Unearthed multipart documentary on Batman, Burton hated the Prince music. I guess technically that would be the songtrack, since most of that music was never in the film, but what did make it in was forced on him by the studio. The Elfman score was a completely different story. That, he probably loved, and I’ve never heard any criticism of it. They even borrowed the theme song into B:TAS.

I would place Batman '89 at the top, mostly because of the artistical vision which does far more justice to the character and the city than Dark Knight. I stand with @Murdoch17 from before, we must give Batman '66 more credit, it is quite a fun addition to the series. I do hope we will get some Mask of the Phantasm sets in the future,at least the character.

At fitst I thought it was kinda harsh to put TDKR even below B&R.....but thinking about it, as terrible as B&R is, at least it was kinda in a "so bad it's good" way. And it has Arnie! TDKR on the other hand was just plain convoluted and boring.

I did quite enjoy the Lego Batman Movie though!

Eh, I can see it. I’ve seen the extended cut, which fills in some of the gaps in the story. The Batman (like the new Superman movie) was good…except the titular character just felt like the performance was phoned in. And honestly the best thing to come out of The Batman was actually the Penguin miniseries.

And I agree, Anton Furst's designs really captured and established the look of Gotham City in Batman '89, that just never seemed to be duplicated properly in almost ANY of the Batman flicks (except Batman Returns). A true industrial gothic look. The original great animated Timm/Dini show took total inspiration from it.
But I put The Dark Knight above it because of a few factors, Heath's Joker is on another level, and ALL of the main characters - the actors were in top form, top performances. The main storyline was better imho and Batman here was written with him actually showing and doing detective work.
Batman '66 is a great superhero film. If one's never seen the tv show, this flick captured all the points in less than 2 hours, all the villains, gadgets, camp and some fun fight sequences.
Mask of the Phantasm...I agree, Lego should look into doing a full line or at least some kind of CMF and include Phantasm.

The set looks cool and fun. The figure with the cape looks menacing and I wouldn't mind picking him up sometime. BUT I don't need the set since I have the '89 version and that's good enough for me. Just like I didn't need the Tumbler remake since I had the original.

Hopefully they give us more Batmobiles in the future. I'd hate to be without one on the shelf.

Yeah, the Batman Animated Batmobile is stylizing the color like classic comics where black shines blue. With so many dark background, they used the 'blue', dark blue for highlights, to stand out.
One of the episodes of the series Batman mentions the batmobile is black.
I like your custom Phantasm. I think Brick Warriors has a Phantasm bladed custom weapon that is close.

When the set came out, I hunted around for screenshots from the series (because _ALL_ of the toys so far had been black, except for Hot Wheels recolors that don’t always even make sense). I found a lot of images where it was black with highlights in a shade of blue (like the GA comics), and I found images where the highlights were just white. I found none that made it look solidly dark-blue.

Right the highlights are that blue they're using. Just for style, artistic, to stand out against the dark backgrounds, surroundings, etc.

Unfortunately, I've not seen Batman Returns, only Batman. The funny thing is, I'd come across a Batmobile Happy Meal toy back around the time the movie came out that had the Batmissile, but didn't see Batman (1989) until years later, so when the car at no point became much slimmer, I though that must have been something made up for the toy. It was only upon seeing this article that I found out that that was something the sequel came up with.

Honestly I’m just relieved no-one’s tried to claim the Killing Joke adaptation is good (I accept that people are going to continue to be wrong- er, have different opinions than me, which they’re allowed to do because it’s subjective, about The Dark Knight being better than upper-middle). The team behind it should have been excellent enough for it to be at least decent, but woof, that one was just one dropped ball after another. Although I’m not sure I would’ve picked Azzarello to adapt Moore any more than I would’ve picked Snyder, so perhaps it was doomed from the start.

There have been a few acclaimed stories that were adapted in less than stellar manners, usually because someone felt they _had_ to change the ending to make it a surprise for even those who’d read the source material. Gotham By Gaslight was another one that comes to mind. I think they also messed with the ending of Long Halloween, but at least that one didn’t seem to cause as much uproar as the way they tweaked other stories.

The Killing Joke does the opposite: the ending is relatively faithful, and it’s the beginning that was a big change. But the main problem is that faithful ending or new beginning, the execution is just a bit of a mess beginning to end, and three quarters of the texture and layers jettisoned.

You know, I’ve never actually watched the longer cut. When I bought it on DVD, I didn’t know there were two versions available, so I got the short version. By the time I found out there was a different cut available, I couldn’t find a copy to buy. But I recently heard that they quietly shifted from the short to long version as the official cut. I picked up a few complete series box sets from the DCAU, including Batman Beyond, so in theory the long cut should be included in that one.

The 4+ line was a treasure-trove of such sets, but even those have become more focused on tying in with the Disney+ cartoons. Which is fine, but maybe also give us a dedicated "Fabulously Fornicating Stupid Comics"-line. And yeah, I DO want that line to feature Adam West as Batman, Cesar Romero as the Joker, Disco Dazzler, Tiara Luke Cage, Panties-on-head Sandman, Batroc the Leaper, Paper Bag Spider-Man, and Superman routinely turning Jimmy Olsen into a monkey or making Lois Lane fat.

And I want Doom to ride a derpy sea-beast while tooting a horn he stole from Namor, because comics should be allowed to be gloriously stupid and DOOM DOES WHAT HE WANTS.

I wish I'd picked up more Mighty Micros, those were a great dose of whimsy. And 76175 had Bombastic Bagman on one of the displays. Unfortunately, we have been deprived of a figure for far too long.

I never said it as zany, but it’s as “back to basics” as you can get. He still carried a pistol before they’d really finished tweaking the design of his Golden Age costume. For zany, you’ll have to take that up with Hugo Strange, who I believe was his first major recurring villain.

Since neither term was in your own text to provide clarification, then as you quoted Crux saying “zany, back-to-basics sets”, you were saying Batman carrying a pistol was “zany” just as much as you saying it was “back-to-basics”.
