Christmas Ornament

LEGO have not released any new baubles this year, but there is still something to hang from the tree. Now through December 15, LEGO VIPs will receive a free 2015 tree ornament with purchases of $50 or more, either online or in store.

If you have 5002813 Christmas Train Ornament, you will want this new one to continue your collection. For everyone else, is this a tradition worth starting?

LEGO 2015 Christmas Ornament PackageIn 2014, LEGO gave away their Christmas Train Ornament to VIPs, then made them available free with purchase at LEGO stores. This year, only VIPs can get the set, which checks in at 32-pieces.

The plastic outer bag holds a sateen inner bag with a drawstring and an illustration of the ornament, and the bag features a LEGO logo stitched onto its side. This is similar to the red sateen bag used for last year's train and makes the set worthy of a stocking stuffer for a LEGO fan on your gift list.

Inside the bag are instructions, pieces, sealed in their own plastic bag, and a gold cord for hanging the ornament. The only rare piece is the printed 2015 1 x 2 white tile, which is exclusive to this set. All of the remaining pieces are common, including the printed 1 x 2 sealed envelope tile that sits behind the tree.

The build only takes a few minutes and yields a nice tree model with gifts under two sides, the 2015 tile in the front and the envelope tile in the back. This provides interest on all sides.

The top of the tree is a bit lacking, but the green round 2x2 with axle hole is needed to connect the Technic piece that serves as the ornament hook, which is reinforced with a notched Technic axle. Up close this spoils the look of the tree, but from a distance, when hung on a Christmas tree, it looks a bit more like a treetop star.

Two advantages of this ornament over the baubles are size and weight. It's small and light enough to hang at the top of a tree, and it calls far less attention to itself than the baubles, making it a harmonious option for those who want some LEGO on the tree.

I'm glad to see LEGO continue this line, and I hope to see another entry in 2016, perhaps a snowman in a blue sateen bag. I do miss the baubles and hope to see new ones in 2017, but one LEGO ornament is far better than none. This is a good follow up to last year's train and a nice bonus for those who still have some LEGO gifts to pick up before the holiday.

Unless you have last year's train or want to start collecting these, there's probably no reason to go out of your way to get one. The set is easily recreated with commonly available parts, and the 2015 tile in the front can be replaced either with a brick-built gift box or another 1 x 2 envelope tile. Instructions are below for those who want to build their own.

Looks lovely. I'm going to have to stop by my local LEGO store to get one tomorrow.

By in United States,

It's available online as well as the physical stores, at least in the U.S. I would love to get it, but I don't think I could justify (to my wife) spending another $50 after what I've already spent on Legos this Christmas season.

By in Canada,

Went to The LEGO Store here in Winnipeg, Canada to buy a Red Five X-Wing and received this lovely little item. The fabric bag is actually really really nice lol. And the employee said that they'll be giving these away until Christmas Eve with qualifying purchase. Can't wait to hang it on my tree; just need to get enough energy to put up my tree first.

By in Australia,

No new baubles for 2015? Wasn't the bauble with white bricks released this year?

By in Australia,

Not sure about OZ, but given the UK is 19-24 December, and the Gingebread House giveway here ends on 18 December, then the timing sounds right for here.
i.e up to 18 December you get the Gingerbread House
19-24 December you get the Christmas Tree
Unfortunately I have to spend $120 + $30 shipping minimum .. makes it an expensive tree ,,

My kids and I have started designing our own Lego ornaments, and we plan on keeping them each year for the next, starting our own tradition

@Stevutz You're correct. 851358 - Holiday Bauble with white bricks is new this year, but LEGO did not produce any new sets with buildable models inside. The three baubles available with models are held over from last year.

I know this is a stupid question, but could someone please tell me the bricklink name of the Technic piece that serves as the ornament hook? Thanks in advance!

By in Canada,

As lego kept these almost a secret last year, I bought last year's on ebay and got this year's model with purchase from lego store yesterday (along with 2016 free calendar). Both are hanging on the tree now and they look really sharp :)

FYI: At least US LSAH has a new policy of not sending out promotional sets on their own. If the set(s) ordered are back ordered, IF the promotional is still available when the set ships, it will ship with it, not on it's own. (Found this out from CS today when I called to check the status of my tree)
