70315 Clay's Rumble Blade prototypes

Posted by ,

As you will no doubt have read CapnRex101 and I have been at BRICK 2015 at ExCeL. It was an excellent, but exhausting, weekend. I hope to write a full show report either today or tomorrow but in the meantime you might find these images of 70315 Clay's Rumble Blade of interest.

Mark Stafford gave a presentation about its development at AFOLCON and he was also in attendance at the BRICK show talking to visitors about the model, being a LEGO designer, Nexo Knights and so on. Several prototypes showing the development of the the model were on display and photos were allowed, so after the break you'll see how the final set took shape and also the page in the instructions showing the Nexo Knights minifigs.

Incidentally, the theme was apparently nearly called Nexonites...

The bots, bottom left, are interesting. They use a new body piece, basically a 1x1 brick with the usual skeleton leg attachment joint at the bottom and a long neck stud on the top. The 'shoulder pad' pieces are a soft plastic: I'm not sure if they have a hole in them to affix to a post on the 1x1 brick body or vice-versa. I guess we'll find out soon enough.

By in United Kingdom,

The shoulder blocks are just soft plastic with two holes in them. One fits on a shoulder pin, the other takes the hand clip. I can't remember exactly but I think the torso has a stud on the front; those function designs are 1x1 printed tiles. The booted skeleton legs are re-used from earlier Ninjago foes. I really like the design of mese minibots.

I couldn't place it before, but there's definitely something of a Stargate Atlantis Wraith Dart about the detachable ship.

As for the minifigures, it's great to see strong female characters, on both sides.

I love these pictures, they give us an idea into what goes behind the development of our sets.

By in United States,

This might be the only Nexo Knights set I will get.

By in United States,

This set is awesome, but would have been even better with silver wheels.

By in Norway,

Thanks for the prototype pictures. I´ve been always interested in set development process and prototypes. I would be very grateful to see more of such articles.

By in United States,

Any idea when the tv show will air? I kept hearing mid December, and it is now mid December and no details have followed.

By in Norway,

@SinKiller-Nick airing on Cartoon Network on Friday at 18:00 in Norway at least, two half hour episodes. With what is most likely a rerun on Saturday morning around 10.

By in Canada,

First version with white wheels and a few slight changes would make a fantastic Ice Planet set!

By in New Zealand,

This reminds me of ice-planet. I like this set but not the overall theme.

Love it! Cool to see how they've come to the final design.

Well, that is fascinating... but good lord, it's UGLY with all the stuff removed.

My eyes... it burns! It burns!

I'm sorry, I just can't get into this line at all. I'm glad for the people who are excited about it, but it just feels like something mega bloks would put out.

I'd have just rather seen a new space line and/or a new castle line, this just feels like a fugly hybrid. The minis I find interesting a bit, but that's it.

The names of the Nexo Knights are good plays on their weapons names, but I wonder if kids will get it. How many kids know that a claymore is a type of sword?

I can't generate any enthusiasm for this theme. It's a complete mess, neither fish nor fowl. Good job it's not intended for the likes of me.

@sparrownest - thanks for the tip . . . but as far as I can see there is still no sign of the show on CartoonNetwork in the United States.
