Star Wars Advent Calendar Review: Day 24
Posted by CapnRex101,
To begin my final review of the 2015 Star Wars Advent Calendar I am going to bring you back to the 21st of January when I published a report on the licensed sets at the London Toy Fair. There I commented on the contents of this calendar and made reference to the R2-D2 and C-3PO minifigures, describing them at the time as 'crude.'
I was wrong. While R2-D2 is simple but charming, this fantastic C-3PO minifigure features an enormous amount of printed detail and offers a brilliant combination of Christmas attire with the original character. The beard fitted around Threepio's neck is particularly humourous and recalls this Lucasfilm Christmas card from 1979. The torso printing is unique and shows a red jacket lined with white fur, while a black belt runs around the front and back.
Furthermore, C-3PO comes with a red sack which has only appeared in this colour once before, in 10245 Santa's Workshop. This is a superb element and it is nice to see it included in such a rare colour.
Overall - 5.0 - I was initially sceptical of this figure but it is a delight, perhaps my favourite festive Star Wars minifigure since Yoda in 2011!

I do think that overall, this was the weakest Star Wars Advent Calendar to date with a lot of redone models (many of which didn't need the upgrade), not enough true minifigs, and a few weak models. Surprisingly, the weapons racks--while still annoying--have improved, as they at least look like genuine pieces of specific environments.
I guess we'll find out what next year's AC will include in a few weeks, but here's hoping that we get out of the Original Trilogy mold and get back to army builders and a focus on Rebels and TFA. I'm especially hoping for a BB-8 snowman and either a Santa Ren or Phasma.
I'm going to have to agree with you, this is probably one of my favorite festive Star Wars minifigures. I just like Santa Vader slightly more than this one though.
^ But nothing quite beats the R2 snowman! I don't know, it's a cute reference, but overall lackluster to me. Perhaps it's the inability to use a hat, and thus resorting to the beard.
I like this fig too. The beard is perfect for 3P0's face!
This calendar was good, but there were too many gun racks and shooty-things, compared to the amount of mini vehicles and minifigs, which are both the highlights of the calendar usually. Not that they weren't good this year; the A-wing, AT-AT, Santa3P0 and Reindeer2 are all seriously good. (except for the wonky prints on my Reindeer2)
Does anyone else not find this figure slightly disturbing and creepy? :P I know C3P0 normally is "naked", and while this is fairly faithful to the original postcard, his jacket here ends to high up, only coming down to his waist. He looks like he's pantsless Santa in a weird exhibitionist kind of way, hahaha-hohohoe. :P
sent from the Skelligs ;)
A big thanks for the reviews, Rex! Perhaps I could help out next year? :)
Just an excellent minifig. I'm so happy with the detail. This is my most detailed Threepio to date. It's a fantastic finish to this AC. I wish we had more mini vehicles than weapons racks, but I am thrilled with the minifigs offered this year!
I just recently got back into LEGOs and was not familiar with the Advent Calendar, so I skipped it. By the time I decided I wanted it, it was already gone. Reading the (great) reviews here made me want it even more.
I went to the LEGO Store this morning to pick some bricks and while standing in line to pay (there was a lot of people) somebody RETURNED a set! Which I immediately grabbed. Unopened and with the box in pristine condition... I guess what I will be doing tonight? :)
Merry Xmas, Happy Hanukkah or whatever suits you this time of the year! I hope there will be plenty of LEGO for you this holiday season.
@LukeSkywalker not so much the mining, but definitely on the Christmas card!
^^I hope that returned set is intact. Hint: when buying an Advent Calendar, open the box (sadly, the tape is never all that strong) and check that everything's in the tray! Scalpers enjoy going after the exclusive figures, and I've found raided returned Advent Calendars before.
@ResIpsaLoquitur The set was intact. All the bags sealed and complete.
It was fun to build all gifts in one sit while re-reading the reviews and comments here.
I loved the reviews so much that I bought the SW AC in the mid of december to accomplish my City AC, and SW is so much better. There are many awesome models included (AT-AT, the brilliant sail barge with the sarlacc, the lovely mini-ewok village ...)
I definitely will buy this years SW AC as well! :)
