LEGO is searching for a Senior Product Designer

I'm definitely applying for this. Anyone know what the job climate is like in Billund?

Hopefully the next designer makes a Hospital.

This seems very interesting! I won't be applying, but if a LEGO fan applies that has been around for awhile, we might see more of the type of sets we would like to see!

If I had the qualifications I'd be right on this.

Give me about five years (I need more experience first) and I'll apply! I'm graduating with a Bachelor's degree in Industrial/ Product Design this year! Working for TLG is my ultimate goal.

What a dream it would be to work for Lego! No skill in this area so will never happen but it would be cool if a Brickset member would someday!

Anyone have any idea of the pay range? I think the designers at Legoland only pull down like $35k annually.

Definitely would be a dream job for me. But I too fail on the qualifications. Other than being very creative, having decades of experience in building with Lego and being quite fluent in English, all the major things are missing.

Anyway, the pay range would surely be interesting. Last I heard the cost of living in Denmark (Scandinavia in general) is very high. Usually the average wages tend to represent that also. No idea about TLG though.

I've just been through the points mentioned in the job description, I do have most of those quantities however I still lack creativity, CAD skills and verbal communication. I'm half way through Product Design at university so I have a couple of years to polish up on those areas before applying.

I would love this but it seems like most of the designers are single, without families to support; I'm not sure the salary would work out for me as a provider. (That and I am sure there are other, way more qualified folks out there).

Still, I might apply anyway; no harm to be had in trying.

@Rodiziorobs: I don't know how much truth there is to that generalization. I know that at least one of the designers hired at the recruitment workshop I went to last year, Joel Baker, has a wife and daughter.

Taxes in Denmark are higher than in the United States, but a lot of services that can be very expensive in the United States are free in Denmark, including doctor visits, hospitalization, children's dental care, Danish language lessons, nursuries for children ages 0-3 and university. Medicine and adult dental care are not free but are state-subsidized.

That said, it's true that in Denmark, part of the high standard of living is due to both men and women working and contributing to their household income.

- The job climate in Billund is : 60% of the population works for LEGO. The town is tiny but there are many other towns in the area.
- Jamie has recently become manager of his group after holding off on that for years so he probably won't be taking a step back to become senior designer again. But the point is valid: an internal candidate seems more likely to be promoted which would open a position of designer anyway.
- With regards to salary: get a job offer first, you can always decline after that. If you get invited to Billund for the selection process it will be like going on an all expense paid inside tour!

@Legopassion8, there are several job opening at each of LEGO's factories so go for it!

"American" is that language where it's normal to write "... a motivated cover letter..."

There could be other reasons for sourcing this candidate externally as well. I think there are specifics in this role that are not mentioned in the advert, and that the candidate will come to know about when they get into the interview.

More or less a google question, but what types of majors and previous careers would I need to get into the designer process for Lego? All I've heard is they randomly select people at Brickfairs and such.

I have applied, and I am ex Bright Bricks (I used to design a LOT of the kits they produce) so we shall see ;)

A degree in Industrial (product) design from a university with an accredited program is generally one of the requirements. I'm actually about to graduate this year with an ID degree and I can tell you that once you know the design process, you can apply it to just about anything. I've designed shoes, tools, consumer products, transportation, and, of course, toys. As the posting says, you should be proficient at concept sketching, CAD (Rhino, Solidworks, etc.), modelmaking, idea generation, and communication in general.

As a lifelong Lego fan and 20 years as a creative Mechanical Engineer I would love to do this, but I'd have to convince my wife to quit her own business and move our young family to Denmark. Probably won't happen, but it sure would be fun. Oh well.

Working for LEGO would be amazing. But I have almost zero of the skills listed (I do speak English fluently...other than this new text speak people use). But when I was younger I was too hung up on medical school instead of product design, so I think my student loans wouldn't allow me to take a pay cut, even if I was qualified.
