And the result is...

The project that has passed the first Ideas review of 2016 is...

Old Fishing Store

Fishing has always been a central point in Robert Bontenbal’s life. This big passion, in combination with his day job as an architectural draughtsman, is what came together to create this beautiful model that is packed with lovely details and play opportunities. Its creative building style represents a unique design expression for LEGO houses that we’re all very excited about.

By in United Kingdom,

Really? I am surprised, the first moc to become a set.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Wow! Surprise for sure. And a positive one. I didn't even consider this, this is going to be largest Ideas set to date!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Awesome - this is what I was hoping for!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Wow! I never thought they would make such a big and detailed idea a set!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Largest Set? Dont forget the Saturn V!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This makes me happy- no licensing to help sell people, no 3rd party interests to suddenly boost support, just a great moc that people like, and decided would make a great Lego set. Ideas at its finest! I'll buy this one for sure!

Gravatar
By in Italy,

nooooo why u no Johnny5 :(

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Wow! I'm really surprised about this one! Will be on my short list for sure, what a nice idea!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

so surprised and so so happy. probably the best and my most fav project in have seen on ideas. Thought it had no chance though due to size and price point. Brilliant.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's really surprising. I don't know how well that would translate to an official set without loosing all the immense detail that makes this set memorable. Oh well, congrats to passing review!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm more excited about this one than just about any previous Ideas set! It's a beautiful, unique building that will complement both modular and non-modular Lego city layouts alike.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Very cool. I like the fact that the Winter theme style shops was an inspiration (with other fishy shops to come) Love the colours used ... Feels right ...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Awesome result!

Disappointed a few others didn't make it but can't win them all!

Edit: Most importantly forgot to add Congrats to the designer and builder!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Super! let's hope they keep those colours!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice suprise killer Huw, honestly I am shocked but I am glad it was one I supported on Ideas.
Would have loved Jurassic Park VC.

Gravatar
By in United States,

This is awesome!!! Fishing is huge in my family and we are going to get this for sure.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Way better than my prediction! Couldn't be happier. I just hope they don't shrink it down at all. I hope LEGO partners with RobenAnne to make his other projects which would make for a great theme.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very happy with this selection. Can't wait to see the final design. Really hope to see the Mountain View Observatory win the next round.

Gravatar
By in France,

Wow, super surprised but extremely excited about this one, one of the best submissions to Ideas yet. Congrats Robert!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Yep, a good choice from Lego.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bleh. Older looking buildings aren't exactly my favorite sets. Johnny 5 definitely would have been a lot better than this. Price will decide whether I will buy this for the parts.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

Wow, that's suprising. Would've expected a smaller set like the fossil museum to pass through since this has roughly 2100 pieces, which leads me to wonder if Lego will cut the piece count.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I bet the next review will pick the observatory.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Nooo! Johnny Five! :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Damn...I really wanted that fossil museum

Gravatar
By in Switzerland,

thats the one I wanted, really excited, there will be more than one required here

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wonder if the Adaams Family one passed or not. That one seemed like a definite need. Perfect for Halloween next year too. Unfortunately for all of these I really don't see them being bought much. Congrats on the winner though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

To quote Darth Vader, Noooooooooooooooooo!!!
Sorry, I really wanted a Star Wars one to be passed.

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

That's good. It was the only one I really saw passing the review. Looks like I'll be adding that to my list of sets to get next year!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Dang it........... I was hoping the Museum would pass.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Why is Amy Schumer doing the video?

Nice to see something a bit different pass.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Woah, great!! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Gosh, I am surprised. While it is a nice set, I just didn't think it would be the kind of thing to appeal to the masses.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations to the designer! Bit bummed out that Johnny 5 didn't make the cut and the train station would have been great... Looking forward to seeing the final product and hoping some of his other projects get considered too, I didn't see this one while it was still gaining support but I have supported some of his other designs and can see them building up a nice seaside collection of modulars.

Time for everyone to start thinking up waterfront displays!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw,

I enjoy watching these videos and guessing which model might be revealed as the winner. But your post title spoiled the results. Please don't do that!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Surprised but pleased to see it pass. Thought it would be far too big but I guess we'll need to wait and see what changes they make...

I think my favourite part of the video is hearing Charlotte having to read out people's ridiculous user names. I wonder how many takes they had on those.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

wow, looking at the previous Idea sets, I certainly didn't see that one being selected. That makes me very curious and hopeful for the future. ^^

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely a surprise for sure. Looks like it would be pretty cool set though.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm a little disappointed that the Fossil Museum didn't pass, but very pleasantly surprised that this one did; it's a very nice MOC.
It will be interesting to see what TLG come up with and release, but this may well be a purchase for me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@woosterlegos if you'd have gone to the Ideas blog to watch it, it would have been spoiled for you there too. That was the reason I announced the winner as I did.

I'm sure in the past that has not been the case.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It's a really cool model, and I'm sure a lot of AFOLs will be very happy with it, but personally it doesn't particularly interest me. I was rooting for the fossil museum. Congrats to the builder on his achievement though!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

BRILLIANT! I absolutely loved this and his other submissions too.

Disappointed we aren't getting Johnny 5 as well, but I'm happy with the fishing store!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I feel both sad and happy, i really wanted the Jurrasic Park Visitor Center.
But the fishingstore is awesome too!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How surprising! I was sure that the Jurassic Park or Johnny 5 was going to win! Also, no considerations in this review which is a shame.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

This looks so badass, I'm really excited to see a good-looking non-licensed building make the cut!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does this really mean that it's going into production? Or that it simply made the latest cut?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Awesome news--let's hope they stay close to the original!

Also--anyone have any idea when the Apollo 11 - Saturn V Ideas set will be released? It seems like we've been waiting a long time for that one!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations to Robert!

Surprised - I liked this model but didn't think it would win and so I was hoping for the particle accelerator. I hope the fishing store doesn't get changed too much before it comes out as a set. What will happen to the other entries in this series?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would rather have had Johnny 5.
I'm sure modular building fans will love this but another easy pass for me.
Still, it will save money for the UCS Snowspeeder :)
Out of the next batch the only one that catches my eye is the UCS Landspeeder but I don't see that ever getting made as Lego will do their own version for the Star Wars line if they want to release it.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

well thats different :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Very excited to add that fishing store to my city!

For the ones that didn't pass, do the designers ever release instructions or LDD files so we can try to make them anyway? Or are they prohibited from doing that with the LEGO Ideas program or something?

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

No Johnny 5???

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am pleasantly surprised. I just hope the Spaceballs makes the cut in 2017.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am shocked! I thought the safe choices would have been the fossil museum, accelerator, maybe even Johnny 5, but not this. I was never expecting the Gingerbread House to make it. Johnny 5 was a stretch due to licensing, how a young generation would recognize the iconic character from the 80's, etc.
I do like the chosen set, and I'm sure I'll add it to my collection, but I wonder how much it'll be scaled back for the final model.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Excellent to see that the Old Fishing Store has been chosen. Definitely one I will by out of all the ideas chosen. Well done and congratulations to the designer.

Johnny 5 is too similar to Wall-E so see why it wasn't chosen and maybe the Fossil Museum wasn't chosen as there may be a future Museum in the modular line up soon!!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

YAY!! I'd like to get this set at some point. It is very well designed.

Gravatar
By in France,

wonder if the model will be downgraded to keep cost down. it's the most interesting idea model so far.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

OMG! This is brilliant and awesome!! I`m so happy for this and congratis to the designer! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Wow, I am shocked! Ideas always picks such awful, fanboy licensed projects I never expected this to pass. So out of character for them. But I love this one and I really hope they will keep the model as is. I will definitely buy this, if so.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Really? No Johnny 5? I would have thought he would have been the perfect price range and type of build.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

At this point, I think it's save to say that no Star Wars set is ever going to pass the Review stage. The BB-8 would have been the safest bet of the batch: based of a character that is already famous beyond the SW fanbase; having an adorable function and a moderate parts count; not really fitting in with the scale of the other sets of the line...

The choice for the Fishing Store was a great and pleasant surprise, though.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Didn't *really* think this would be the choice, but hoped it would be. Very excited, but now comes "the wait".

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations Robert! I always thought that modulars would never make it on Ideas, but this has clearly proven me wrong in a good way. Certainly one of the best choices for modulars, as well. I just hope they don't downscale it too much.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Johnny 5 seems too similar to Wall-E to have been seriously considered, in my opinion. I mean, Wall-E just came out a year ago and is still available.

Gravatar
By in Norway,

Does anyone have a link to the actual idea at Lego Ideas, I can`t find it..

Gravatar
By in United States,

I must say, I didn't think that this would be the winner, but after taking a second look at the submission, it actually looks like it was the best choice out of all of them. I do hope that LEGO keeps it as true to the original as possible and can incorporate many of its subtle details (however at the same time I hope it doesn't cost a fortune as I need to continue my habit of buying all LEGO Ideas sets!) Overall, excellent choice in my opinion. Looking forward to seeing official images next year!

Also, @Chilis_no, here is the link to the submission: https://ideas.lego.com/projects/124448

Gravatar
By in United States,

*Darth Vader* NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! I wanted that BB8 so bad.

Gravatar
By in United States,

First off, I would like to say I voted for all of these, and I liked all of these very much. You can go through these and see why Lego picked the fishing store.
Fossil Museum has too much tan and dark tan
Gingerbread house is what Lego has done for Christmas
Jedi high, BB-8 council star wars license
Jurassic park, I do not think the other sets sold well so a big one would not
Modular Train Station is too similar to something Lego would do on their own
Particle Accelerator has too much white
Johnny Five is too similar to Wall-E
Again, I loved these and would have bought each of them.
The fishing store has great AFOL colors, and great building techniques.
Congratulations to Robert, and I will be buying 2.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am surprised, like many others. I had zero interest in this. The only appealing thing to me is possibly some interesting colors. But it looks like only sand green tiles, which I could go either way on. And it is the size of a modular, but it won't fit in with the rest of the modulars AND it will likely be the price of a modular?? If it is a lot cheaper, but a similar size, then LEGO has a lot of explaining to do on why their modulars are so expensive. Otherwise, they will gut it to make it at a lower price to have the masses be interested and will take away from the final product.

Either way, congrats. Definitely thrilling to be picked.

I would have preferred Johnny-Five, only because of my childhood/nostalgia, but it is very similar to Wall-E, so understandable why it didn't get picked.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Did the BB8 even truly qualify; as the building technique might have been invalid in Lego' eyes.

It's nice to see an unlicensed model make the cut. Looking at next round again too many licensed themes and if not for the observatory and market store a say there's strong possibility of nothing passing (despite being 12 sets).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Happy with the result for once. I would have liked the modular train station but at the same time its not long enough for a LEGO train. Still want to hear though the rejection reasons. Lego marketing might enjoy all the extra projects that will never get made but its too frustrating for me to bother voting on them anymore when I can only guess at which ones might actually make it.

Gravatar
By in France,

Can't wait!! Awesome choice. Thx LEGO!
BB 8 would have been a choice too though IMO
Will definitely buy this one, but first thing first: the Caterham!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Johnny 5 was robbed. Couldn't they have pulled a Ghostbuster HQ and just released this as the next "modular" and claimed it was already under development when the Ideas project passed muster? At least that way we still get the best of both worlds. Oh well.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's very well done. Congrats to the designer!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Excellent choice! Exactly what I was hoping for. Congratulations to the designer!

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Great! I love it! They could not have made a better choice. Hopefully I will be able to afford it, when it is available. The piececount of 2160 may suggest a pricepoint equal to the modulars? I would not hesitate buying it in this case. But it should hopefully not be more than 179,99€...

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Very, very cool! Never expected this. Let's see what they make out of it. But if it is anywhere close to the proposed model, I'll be very tempted to buy this.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like everyone else, I am surprised and very pleased. I love large detailed buildings and will be purchasing this.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

How good is this! So pleased the fishing store was chosen. I was sure it would fail to be picked. I've wanted the set ever since I first saw it - one of the best I've ever seen on the Ideas website.

Now to avoid looking at any pictures of the original model so I'm not disappointed by the final one that will be made!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the design of this model very much, although too many years of having to gut/smell my father's catches would prevent me from using this as an actual fishing hut. I am also incredibly disappointed the Dinosaur Museum models didn't make it. :-( I was looking forward to having something to put on the ground floor of my Museum MOC.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

No Johnny, no buy.

But I liked that shack !

Gravatar
By in United States,

O.O I'm completely, fully, and utterly shocked, and delighted out of my mind! It's wonderful to see another thoroughly original creation make it all the way to the top against such difficult odds.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Gonna be perfect for Scooby-Doo and the gang to solve a mystery in.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm not up to date with the submitted models, is the footprint of this a standard 32 x 32 baseplate?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Definitely a surprise but a very welcome one. I really like the fishing shop. It'll be my first ideas purchase (if you dont count the Dr Who I got for my daughter for xmas last year).

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ooh! Can't wait. Love this set. I hope it doesn't get changed much.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Absolutely great this result! I had my fingers crossed so much for the Fishing Store as I love detailed buildings such as this. Would have like Johnny five as well, but this is even better.
And why is anyone surprised that the Star Wars or Jurassic Park sets were not chosen? Lego has stated several times iirc that they don't do Ideas sets based on current IPs. Brilliant as some of those sets might have been.
I am very happy right now and hope they keep as close to the original design with this as possible.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I'm so excited to see an original idea, and a non-licensed one, make it in - especially up against such fantastic models! I imagine it'll lose a lot of the intricate detail work by the final model, but I'm already looking forward to building this one :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I was rooting for the Gingerbread House like crazy... But its being passed over just means that the kid and I need to come up with our own, and of course that's actually the best thing about LEGO.

The fishing shop is gorgeous. I dig the aqua and the assorted browns/oranges. Chapeau!

Gravatar
By in United States,

That's just a beautiful model. Congratulations.

I knew it wasn't going to happen, but I'm kind of sad that they're not making Rolling BB-8 this way...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huh! I'm really surprised! I thought it'd be Gingerbread House for sure. But I like this model, too. I just thought it would be too large and parts intensive. Congratulations!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This has to be the most beautiful LEGO Ideas submission I've seen. So glad it won!

Here's hoping the Little House On the Prairie set wins in January!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Heartfelt congratulations to the designer. To me? This set represents one of the finest moments of Ideas. I look forward to seeing how the Idea is translated into a marketable product. This set was my pick from the bunch, it is so rustic and charming and so like many places I used to visit on the Lake of the Ozarks when I was a kid. I feel like a kid waiting for Christmas!

Bravo!

Gravatar
By in Greece,

Finally a set to my liking. It's been years since Peter's Reid mech...
Now let's all wait for the piece count and price :-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Probably the "purest" Ideas set since the Exo-Suit. I hope this means LEGO will be bringing back the Ninja fish element!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Why does Lego always reject the sets I actually care for. At least this time they didn't pick the worst one. Sometimes they do (I'm looking at you, Wall-E).

Gravatar
By in United States,

I would have loved to see Johnny 5

Gravatar
By in United States,

I figured it'd be either this or the Gingerbread house. Lego doesn't seem too keen on allowing ideas for already existing lines to go through. Why pay the royalties to an Ideas submitee when they can just make it themselves and not have to bother? IPs aren't off limits but it seems like people are wasting their time trying to create sets for lines that are already well established. And in truth I'm kinda glad about that. I hope this pushes people to create more original projects or simply to bring new ideas to the table. Do we really need lego ideas to form just another Star Wars or Jurassic Park set? Seems like setting the bar pretty low to me.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

That's surprising, but it's a good surprise. Never thought they'd go with a big building like that.

I'm sad the train station didn't make it through because it was a gorgeous train station (and trains are under-loved by Lego at the moment), but the fishing store looks amazing either way.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No Johnny 5. :'(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Having seen the particle accelerator in action, I'm dying to build that for myself now, I can't believe that didn't pass review!

However, it's not like the winner is any sort of a step down - it's a fab building (at the moment) and congrats to the winning design. I just hope those walls stay built the same way and there's still plenty of fish.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Never would have thought this would have passed. Mostly due to piece count. Very cool, though!

Gravatar
By in United States,

What an awesome MOC. Hopefully it doesn't lose too much in review. Especially not that lovely sand green.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Wow I am so happy about this (it probably means his other submissions will not get through, as Lego will now own this theme for their own adaptations if they choose to), but very very happy. I really liked the particle accelerator and the rolling BB8 - but this is an awesome creative new idea set !!! Perfect choice.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I wanted Johnny-5... :(

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Wow amazing result. Especially since last times I was a bit dissappointed...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This does seem to be a slight shift in Ideas sets from the 'normal' sets, and a welcome one. This modular scale building is a purchase for me!

Gravatar
By in New Zealand,

I'm impressed with this choice. I like the clever, rustic look of the old store. I can see this set being very popular.

Gravatar
By in United States,

AWESOME! It's such a great looking set, one I'll definitely be purchasing day one. So glad it got chosen! Congrats to the designer.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks like this time, it'll be "No assemble, Stephanie!"
Joking aside, that definitely looks like an interesting model - great rustic seaside look. I look forward to seeing what the official set will look like.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

OMG, I am thrilled! I was beginning to give up hope of this kind of MOC getting through the Ideas selection process! I love its decrepitude, idiosyncracies and detail and I hope all are preserved as much as possible in the final model. This is actually much more exciting to me than seeing what the new modular will be...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Other than the Lothlorien set from a couple of cycles ago, this is the one set that made it to 10,000 that I wanted the most. I am very pleased and very surprised. I was sure it's size would keep it from becoming an official set. Now let's hope they get the boat repair shop done too, so we can display both together. :-)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Absolutely loved this moc.. glad it won.. I do hope we can get RobenAnne's other matching Mocs!!

Gravatar
By in United States,

The first MOC? Really? All of the Ideas/Cuusoo sets are MOCs. I'm really surprised any of them passed. I would have liked to have seen the fossil museum or the particle accelerator. I'm not a huge fan of Short Circuit so I'm not too broken up over Johnny 5. Although it is an excellent model. The rest (including the fishing shop) I figured never had a chance. But than again with the fishing shop passing it may just prove that larger models can pass. I look forward to seeing the final product.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I agree with the points made about licensed sets, but... damn, I would've bought that Visitor Centre in a heartbeat... :/

And the particle accelerator I was sure would make it. Very surprising.

Gravatar
By in United States,

That is so cool, hopeful is is not the much money

Gravatar
By in United States,

I LOVE IT, I AM SO EXCITED!! I can't wait to buy, build, love and show off this set!! Hands down, it's the most unique and beautiful. It doesn't look like your standard Lego build, yet it's using Lego parts and looks incredibly finished. I couldn't be happier about the decision, although all entries were great, they picked the one I was most excited about!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Sorry to drag up an old thread but I wondered what the likelyhood is for instructions of any models that didn't make it through? I love the Johnny 5, I've recreated some of it but can't figure out a large portion of it. I love me some 80's themed Lego characters!
