Christmas Build-Up: Day 7

Posted by ,

It’s the end of the first week. Can the countdown conclude it with a bang? Let’s find out...

It’s a penguin! And while it surely fits with a winter theme, I can’t help but feel a little let down. The shaping of the body is pretty respectable, but about those eye holes...

Those eye holes, man. They stare deep into your soul. The empty crevices are legitimately creepy, and could have benefited form the use of some circular, 1x1 printed tiles on top.

Completing the look are bright blue, hinged flippers, which add a delightful splash of color. The yellow beak and feet are appropriate, as well. However, the back doesn’t look too good, where the grey head stands out like a sore thumb.

Overall - 2.0 - a simply okay model. Creepy eyes (or lack thereof), and odd coloring in some spots, too - though the latter might not have been easy to rectify given the multi-building nature of the set.

IMHO, looks more like an owl. Strange colored one, but the overall shape (those huge eyes and beak) is unmistakable.

Like TheBrickPal, I thought it was a funny coloured penguin....

I thought it was an owl after I built it too. I'm tempted to dismantle it and reassemble the windmill...

Is this bird-wars? I vote owl.

I am also going to submit my vote for an owl. It reminds me of Bubo from Clash of the Titans with its unusually bright colour scheme and hollow eyes.

Having said that, I can certainly see its penguin features too.

By in Netherlands,

I also think it's a penguin, a really strangely colored one though.

But if it has to be a owl I would have done it very differently in a way that makes it much clearer that it indeed is an owl.

I would have used 2 1x1 Roof Tiles on top of his heaf for eyebrows, 2 1x2 Roof Tiles for his body like this build but facing backwards and remove the Inverted Roof Tile 2x2.

I am on team Owl, the eyes give it away

By in Australia,

I don't know.

Regardless of which bird-team you find yourself on? I think it's a pretty creepy model regardless. When did Christmas become about zombie birds?

By in Spain,

A penguinowl maybe?

By in United Kingdom,

I don't know what it is but I wish it would stop starring at me that way...

By in Germany,

"They stare deep into your soul." Hilarious!

Gonna have to go with owl too, but I'm starting to suspect the real ingenuity of this set lies in the fact that all of the animals represent more than one species at once. Maybe this is what "24-in-one" is really about. We got penguin and owl, just 22 more to go! :D

@Zordboy: At the risk of sounding like a broken record, the models in this set don't necessarily have a connection to Christmas ... krk ... to Christmas ... to Christmas ... krk ...

^ Most of them do, though... and the ones that don't, should. Right?

And the owlguin stared deep into my soul... and saw nothing... I'm going to sit in the corner and suck on my thumb awhile.

I think I'll have to be on team penguin. Those yellow feet are quite reminiscent of the arctic bird.

See I can't see past the black 1x2 with bars on both ends being a moustache, overall making it just look like some really creepy face. Penguin definitely wasn't the first thing that my brain saw!

Thanks for the entertainment. :-)

I love the conversation these builds generate. I'm also in the penguin camp.

By in United States,

It's an owl not a penguin. Either way I'm changing those eyes.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I thought owl too, and thought the eyes were well done to represent it.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Team owl here. Changed the eyes, put some 1x1 cheese slopes on top, made it look like an owl even more to my eyes.

I'm on team weird, too, though.

Owl for me too... with a penguins body!

I think it is an owl because the eyes face front like an owl and they really went with that circular look for them. Definitely an odd animal build in relation to the other animal ones especially since it doesn’t use the white eye pieces.

As CapnRex said, "Bubo from Clash of the Titans" is the correct answer.

Owl.

@ TheBrickPal: I'm afraid I have to disagree. Actually, most of them by far don't (assuming the puppy is indeed a puppy as you made it out to be, the only one to date with any connection to winter -- not to speak of Christmas -- has been the motor sleigh). Taking that into account as well as considering that LEGO nowhere said that there was a connection, neither do I think there should be one, no. It's just the same as last year's: fun, but not really "christmassy" fun, even though you "build up" to it. I guess such a limited scope would just be too hard to realize with an equally limited number of pieces, but what do I know?
