Trailer Brickdown: Solo: A Star Wars Story

Posted by ,

The first teaser trailer for Solo: A Star Wars Story has been released at last. Unusually, this trailer features all five LEGO sets which make up the first wave based on the movie, although they have yet to be officially revealed.

We will not therefore be showing leaked images of those five sets but we are able to identify them in the trailer while also engaging in some speculation about which other characters, vehicles and locations may appear in future sets.

75209 Han Solo's Landspeeder is introduced almost immediately, with the smuggler in the driving seat while Qi'Ra rides as a passenger. This dark blue vehicle appears to be far sleeker than the X-34 Landspeeder piloted by Luke during Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope but it does include an unusual asymmetrical rear wing which might have been modified by Han, befitting his character in the Original Trilogy. You might also notice Han's golden dice hanging from the rear view mirror!

Han and Qi'Ra seem to be involved in a high speed pursuit, presumably through the streets of a city on Kessel or Corellia. They are being chased by an Imperial speeder which appears in 75207 Imperial Patrol Battle Pack as well as 75210 Moloch's Landspeeder, shown on the right in the image below. We do not yet know whether the Empire is working with Moloch, who is rumoured to be a bounty hunter, but they are certainly both chasing Han during this scene.

This wide shot provides a better look at both Han Solo and Moloch's landspeeders on the outskirts of the city. I like the contrasting sizes and designs of the speeders, one of which seems to be built for speed while the other feels more like the equivalent of a muscle car. The third vehicle in the background may feature in a future set, although it does not actually appear to be involved in the pursuit given its slow speed here.

These tribal characters are also absent from the first wave of sets but their leader is prominent in both teaser trailers released so far. It therefore seems very likely that this warrior will appear in a future set, perhaps based upon the beach scene shown below or on the train where he is seen fighting against Woody Harrelson's Tobias Beckett during the TV spot. I would definitely be excited to see a LEGO rendition of that train, unlikely though it is!

A snowy environment surrounds the train in the TV spot and that region appears again here as a group of light speeder craft escape alongside a large transport vessel. One of the cargo pods from the train is suspended underneath the speeders, suggesting that a heist is taking place. Presumably this is why Beckett is assembling a crew and recruits Han Solo.

Finally, we see the Millennium Falcon being pursued through an intense electrical storm by a squadron of TIE Fighters. 75211 Imperial TIE Fighter depicts the standard TIE/LN craft but I wonder whether we might also see this modified version which includes an auxiliary laser cannon pod between the cockpit and the port side solar array panel. I certainly hope so as the new design looks superb.

Han Solo often boasts that the Millennium Falcon made the famous Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs and it has already been confirmed that the Kessel Run will appear during Solo: A Star Wars Story. Little is known about the journey in canon other than that the route was used to smuggle spice from Kessel by the Pyke Syndicate. I think there is a good chance that this electrical storm, as well as the monstrous creatures seen below, are involved.

YT-series freighters are famously adaptable and here the Millennium Falcon is shown with a sleeker and more colourful design than that seen throughout the Original Trilogy, reflecting Lando Calrissian's personality. I like the revised design very much and am looking forward to 75212 Kessel Run Millennium Falcon. Hopefully that set will capture not just the freighter's external appearance but also the white corridors inside.

Do you agree or disagree with my assessment and what did you think of the trailer? Let us know in the comments.

By in United States,

I saw that during the Super Bowl.

@meisterbuilder

Highly likely that Disney didn't want Solo competing with TLJ's run. Now that TL J is largely out of theaters, they will push Solo hard until May

By in United States,

I want a new Tie Figther(wait for discount) and at leats two Imperial Battle Packs. I do not know if the train will make it but we shall see as well for that tribe and the golden singer.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wish they will do the train!

And is it me or does anyone else think that their is a new tie fighter in the second pitcher from the bottom.

By in France,

I'm very pleased with this trailer.
It looks promising and seems to be in the same vein than Rogue One.
Can't wait to see it!
And of course, I'm looking forward to buying some of the related Lego sets. :-)

By in United States,

I hope that the new Falcon has a more detailed interior, especially since seeing the interior in the movie is supposed to be a major thing. However I've seen in one of the leaked images that if you look through the gaps in the panels you can see a lot of yellow near the area where the game table is on the previous Falcons. Regardless what I really want to see is a scaled down version of the hallways inside this set, similar to how they look in the most recent UCS Falcon.

By in Norway,

The official 2 min trailer is out too.

By in Germany,

All along the teaser, I was waiting for "Hooked on a Feeling" to set in. Well, in the end it was just plain Star Wars as usual... :( Sets look quite good, like the nu Lando!

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looking forward to the leaded refrigerator poly bag.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Anyone think that one of the Black UCS milenium Falcon VIP card offers might be a parts pack so you could edit the UCS falcon to make it look like the Solo movie version?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Would love the modded Tie. Can't say I'm gripped with the 'flying beds' or the cheap-looking KR MF (as seen on Reddit) - Solo certainly improved it and the 75105 MF suddenly looks great!

By in United States,

I'll have to wait for official pics of the sets before I get too excited, as the leaked images I've seen so far have me considering maybe Solo's landspeeder and that's about it. As for the movie, I think the actor chosen for young Han Solo is a casting disaster, that voice is so annoying! I know they couldn't clone a young Harrison Ford or anything, but geez that guy just kills my hopes for the movie.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I Forcefully agreed on this 1!

By in United States,

I was a little skeptical about this movie at first, but after this trailer, I'm officially hyped! I just hope it does not flop like most people think it will. Fingers crossed!

By in Brazil,

I watched the trailer once and I'm not gonna watch it twice. It didn't excite me. I won't judge until the reviews but I don't have high expectations. With Infinity War sets this year, I'm gonna totally pass this Solo wave. I don't like vehicles you see in a single movie only, specially in a spin-off.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Looking at that train -SW to herald return of the monorail? :-D

Gravatar
By in Japan,

Now the question is why May? Won't it be competing with a Marvel movie then? Either way I wish the film well. The vehicles looked really good in both the spot and the teaser.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I have a bad feeling about this...

Gravatar
By in United States,

All three speeders look awesome! I will definitely get Han's

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huh, maybe it'll work? Or not, either way, I'm happy to get more OT sets like the TIE Fighter and Imperial stuff. The REAL question is... are we FINALLY getting Woody Harrelson as a minifigure?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Beyond the 2 boxy speeders, I’m excited for the rest of the Solo sets. TIE, Falcon, Battle Pack and buildable Trooper look awesome. Rogue One & Rebels sets have been far better than Force Awakems and Last Jedi sets over the past few waves and appears that SOLO continues that trend. Love to see that modified TIE (maybe we’ll get a proper Empire Bomber one day) and the train / monorail (if LEGO does, hope we get a complete track). Speaking of snowy sets... since LEGO is bringing back the blue base plate, why has there never been a white one (that I am aware of)?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Good assessments. And a good trailer. I'm exited for the movie. Except... "Han" doesn't look nor sound anything like the Han we all know and love. Yeah, I get that this is ten years before A New Hope, but still, he should at least a bear a little resemblance to Han, but he doesn't. I'll just have to pretend it's really Han, I suppose.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@cbornsh2

sorry if it your name is worng but your are porbaly right and i can see what you mean but i still think that we should have had the trailer a little bit eailer

Gravatar
By in Germany,

@captaincassianandor The parts pack would make sense and I think would less likely offend anyone who has not purchased the UCS Millennium Falcon. However, I think it is very unlikely.

@CapnRex10: excellent post! I enjoyed reading it. Also well spotted with Han's dice!

By in United States,

I feel strange, about the fact that I feel sad, that after all these decades of us nerds decrying, "Blehhh how could they nyot know a parsec is a unit of *distance,* styupid Lucas," it's finally going to be shown that it was never meant to refer to anything else, and it was us, who didn't "get it."

{embarrassed emoji}

By in Ireland,

The trailer looks like some fan made quality stuff, this young Han has no swags and the whole thing is just full of cliche. The high point of the whole trailer is that I am thankful Lego will make some cool minifigs out of this ha, look forward to that enemy leader guy's new head mold!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The trailers look great and its nice that we're actually going to get sets that seem to feature heavily in the movie. (Last Jedi's Scout walker, I'm looking at you).

While I'd love it, I'm not sure we'll get to see the Extended Tie Fighter with the extra weapon bit given we're already getting the boring Imperial Tie fighter for the Solo movie... I can't see Lego doing 2 Tie sets for a single film so close to each other. Which is a shame.

@theJANG: They actually retconned the fact they screwed up originally years ago in the expanded universe stuff. Lucas did screw up and it wasn't until some decades later it was explained that The Kessel run was actually a dangerous area of space and that doing it in '12 parsecs' was an achievement as it meant they'd found a shortcut past all the asteroid fields and black holes etc in the area.

So actually.. We did get it and they had to retcon it to fix their mistake.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

We really didn't need a movie about young Han Solo, let alone sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I always thought Han explained that parsecs are distance in episode IV. "Traveling through hyperspace ain't like dusting crops, boy! Without precise calculations we could fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova and that'd end your trip real quick, wouldn't it?" He made the Kessel Run in 12 parsecs by cutting it close.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@datsunrobbie: The thing is, the 'Legends' canon describe the Falcon as being fast as it has a hyperdrive engine twice the size of a normal ship of its class, having 'hyperspace streamlining' which made its 'warp bubble' tighter so it had less drag. Its later stuff that says its navigation computer is superior, meaning it can calculate much shorter routes.

As said, its been retconned after the fact that its because of its navigation computer being able to calculate shorter routes that Parsecs travelled makes more sense. If you watch the original movies, Hyperspace is always in a straight line... however, new material explains that you can't travel in straight lines in hyperspace as you'll end up hitting some celestial object in your path... and well, if you've seen the Last Jedi (spoiler for those who haven't seen it)... nuff said. So less deviations etc means a shorter route to destination...

All this is still kinda moot however as a shorter route will mean a shorter time anyway... and given The Flacons engines make it faster then a normal ship of its class anyway...

But yeah... long explaination over.

edit: I will note that modern canon of the 2015 book "A New Hope: The Princess, the scoundrel and the farm boy" states the the claim 'was a lie to impress Luke' and recognised 'as nothing more then a empty boast by Obi Wan'.

So even now with new modern cannon, its not fixed or clear.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@Golem25: I kinda agree in that this is kind of another Rogue One situation in it being a story that doesn't need to be told.

However, Rogue one was still an enjoyable movie that gave us some good Lego sets.... soo *shrugs*

By in United Kingdom,

As always, no one hates Star Wars like Star Wars fans. Looks like a fun heist to me.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I really did not like the "new" old falcon, but after watching the trailer I have to admit I feel like it could be fun to have the whole crew and set them up in the falcon. That final bit of the teaser was really nice, I think.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Anyone else notice that Moloch is the name of a Watchmen character?

Gravatar
By in United States,

In addition to the "Falcon has a superior nav computer" explanation, there's another explanation I've seen a number of times - the Kessel Run goes by several black holes, and if you get too close you get sucked in. Because the Falcon can go so much faster than other ships, it can get closer, as its speed keeps it from getting pulled it. That means it doesn't have to go as far out of its way, and the route is shorter - only 12 parsecs long.

Gravatar
By in Spain,

@GrizBe: "I kinda agree in that this is kind of another Rogue One situation in it being a story that doesn't need to be told. " - I think a lot of Star Wars fans such as myself were fundamentally pretty satisfied that there was now a detailed plot reason for the weakness the Rebels could exploit on the Death Star in A New Hope. However, I can see where you're coming from because Han's background is less integral to the entire Star Wars story than the Death Star plans - but I'd love to be proven wrong when I see the film.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@The Rancor: Don't get me wrong, I enjoyed Rogue One, though I wished we'd gotten more of the original cut then what we ended up with.

As said though, we didn't really need to know how they got the Death Star plans. We lasted pretty much 40 years without knowing and that was fine and we never questioned it. Nore did we need to know the vent was an intentional design flaw.... Before Rogue One it was always just an exhaust port for the reactor that was heavily protected so they thought there was no way a ship could target it. Personally I didn't need to know it's designer who'd been forced to make it had included that one small weakness on purpose.

Hence my point of its a story that doesn't really need to be told in the grand scheme of things.

Same with Han... Using only the movies as a source, rather then the expanded universe, the only new thing with Solo movie is the imperial flight school where he got rejected before he became a smuggler.... the Kessel Run is everything from a myth to a boast that doesn't need to be made definitive, and the Sabac game he won the Flacon from Lando in has been well known for years too. Heck, even why Chewie's with Han is well known as he saved him from slavery.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@GrizBe Using your logic, we didn't need Ep 5 or 6 either, Ep 4 was just great on its own! This argument is just silly. Don't be a troll, just move on if you're not interested in Solo or the new sets. Why people feel a need to rain on the rest of our parades is beyond me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

And clearly the only one trolling here is theguru1974, by failing to be able to read a simple post and understanding its explaination, then attempting to insult someone for their own failures.

I never at any point said I had zero interest in the Solo movie, and I've said I'm looking forward to the sets.

Learn to read before you attempt to troll before you make yourself look an even bigger idiot then you already do.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@GrizBe - I'm not the one being negative here, sorry: "Hence my point of its a story that doesn't really need to be told in the grand scheme of things." Your explanations are fine, but still seems pointless to come into here complaining about why the movie exists when the rest of us are fine with it and excited to see the resultant sets. Whatever.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really hope that the actor playing Han has the charisma to make the character rise out from the crowd. I don't want the film to be about a gang of people with Solo in it, I want it to be about Solo. I'm confident Lando will be great though.

By in United States,

Umm... Does anyone know when these are going to be revealed?
