Back in November we launched our character building competition where we asked entrants to design and describe a fantasy character to win one of five money-can't-buy copies of The Art of Bionicle book.

I enlisted the help of subject matter experts Andrew from BZPower and life-long Bionicle and constraction fan Aanchir to help judge and after much deliberation I can now announce the results...

We accepted both brick-built and digital entries and awarded prizes in both categories.

Brick-built entries

We had well over 100 entries in our Flickr group and on Instagram so we have awarded four of the books to winners in this category.

They are, in no particular order...

Shi-Ken the Fiercest Warrior, by Bodhi Poharu

In a world where chickens created their own society, A society where only the strong survive and the weak are forced to farm rocks, one chicken wanted to become the strongest warrior. His parents where both rock farmers but he dreamed bigger, everyday he trained to become stronger to realize his dream.

Once he reached the age 5, Shi-Ken moved to the city to fight in intense chicken fights. He was pretty successful in the arena but made some bad decisions and ended up loaning money from a loan shark who forced Shi-Ken to pay all money he earned from battle.

One day Shi-Ken couldn't handle it anymore and challenged the loan shark to battle, Shi-Ken lost because the loan shark cheated. Shi-Ken was forced to move back to his family’s rock farm. On the way back he got lost, seeking shelter in a cave a mysterious light caught his attention.

Following it Shi-Ken found a weapon, the ancestral spear of Roh-Ster. He took the weapon and moved back to the city, where he challenge the loan shark to a rematch and won with the power of his new weapon. This earned him the title of “The Fiercest Warrior”

The judges said:

  • Shi-Ken is a fun character design and looks incredibly organic, despite being constructed using System parts.
  • Both the design and description are distinctive and have a good sense of humor, going above and beyond the base concept of a chicken-inspired hero.
  • A warrior chicken sounds absurd but Bodhi has managed to turn a humble chicken into something fearsome with a wonderful back-story!

Tarakuna, by Mitch Phillips

Nicknamed Shadow by the locals, this fearsome creature is the pack leader of the Tarakuna. These highly intelligent Rahi live far away from Le-Koro in the Kumu Islets where only brave adventurers and Toa dare to venture.

The judges said:

  • Takuna looks absolutely incredible in every photo and includes remarkably detail. The head is particularly appealing
  • Although more of a creature/monster than a character with a clearly defined personality, this beast feels like it would be unmistakable in any story you put it into.
  • The head is amazing, as is the shaping of the body!

Arkov the Dragon Tamer, by Jayfa

Look like a dragon. Sound like a dragon. Act like a dragon. Only then will one trust you completely.

Though his methods may be a bit extreme, few can deny that Arkov has a way with the beasts that is unseen in any other dragon tamers. One will find he's not much for conversation however...

The judges said:

  • I am thoroughly impressed by the ingenious use of pieces in both Arkov and his dragon. The dragon-shaped shins are my favourite such detail.
  • A colorful and expressive design with an intriguing description that is well suited to the character's ferocious and enigmatic appearance.
  • Love the colors and use of dragon heads!

Welcome Aboard the Friendly Skies, by Patrick Biggs

Captain Salvador is a man of conviction and skill, with a sense of hope he hides behind a gruff, grumpy exterior. He has spent decades leading his crew aboard the Carriedo both shuttling refugees from floating island to floating island, and leading raids against the oppressive oligarchy that rules his world. He truly believes that someday his home will be free, and all will be able to sail the skies with as much grace and ease as the mythical Clouded Whales themselves.

Until that day, he fights for those who cannot.

The judges said:

  • This model represents a perfect combination of Constraction and System pieces. I particularly appreciate the flexible tubes which form the coat.
  • Packed with personality, the model and description both speak to not only the character but also the world/story he inhabits.
  • Outstanding building techniques, posing, photography and back-story. A very worthy winner!

Digital entries

There were far fewer digital than physical entries submitted to the Flickr group and Instagram so we are awarding just one prize.

Surfing away towards new adventures by Diogenes Trexler

Diogenes Trexler may not look like it, but he is the most powerful wizard in the world. He's only in his thirties, but makes his hair appear to be gray (he's actually blonde) to look older and thus more experienced, because he was tired of people constantly questioning his abilities.

He has a wide array of powers, and is most proficient in hypnosis, which gives him an affinity with magical creatures with eyes-based powers. This special link means he can summon a Medusnail called Benicio.

He travels the worlds on his enchanted surfboard, going on adventures with his friend Aristote Paxeros, but spends most of his time on Californian beaches.

He also uses magical weapons, such as Morodatsu's legendary Shurikens, or Michael Jackson's Trident (yup, he was a wizard too !)

The judges said:

  • This model is completely bizarre and I love it! Choosing to build a character without armour was a risk but the resultant design is excellent.
  • Impressive human build, not as much of a fan of the story!
  • This goofy and cartoonish wizard's physique, costume, and accessories are not only hilarious, but also very unique.
  • From the description it sounds as if this is a caricature of the designer! I love his pot belly and pecs!

Congratulations to all five of you! I'll be in touch via Flickr for your snail-mail addresses so I can get the books mailed out to you.

Thanks to Andrew and Aanchir for helping with the judging.

Stay tuned for our next building competition which we'll be launching later this month.

By in Australia,

I'm glad Arkov the Dragon Tamer made it through. I remember seeing the pictures of him and his dragon, and just being gobsmacked at how incredible he looked.

Darn, there goes my hopes of getting that art book once again. Oh well.

Outstanding!

By in Netherlands,

Quite impressed that a pretty good approximation of a human form could be made with Trexler

Congragulations on the winners.

By in United States,

Arkov the Dragon Tamer has got to be my favorite of these. The red, purple, and black create such a mysterious and threatening pattern and the excellent shaping (including that cape) make him feel high-class and self-indulged. He could honestly pass as a Makuta if you wanted him to!

By the looks of things, only one of these characters has been designed to fit into BIONICLE lore. I'm curious how many of the non-winning entries paid homage and how many were wholey original concepts?

That one digital entry is absolutely superb!!!

By in United States,

My friend entered a falcon-headed warrior that had a specialized orb-weapon and a bow. Too bad his entry wasn't picked.

By in United States,

Side note: Tarakuna kinda looks like Maleficent’s dragon form in Disney’s Sleeping Beauty. That’s just my take, of course, YMMV...

By in United States,

I tried, and I made something I'm proud of so I guess that's all that matters XD.

The Chicken Warrior is outstanding

By in Netherlands,

That Captain Salvador is awesome. Reminds me of Hondo Ohnaka. They should have made Hondo.....[sigh]
Hondo: “Even a Sith Lord is no match for my warriors. He put up quite a fight. Blasters, cannons, that glowy thing, voom-voom…”
Obi-wan Kenobi: “You mean a lightsaber?”
Hondo: “That’s it.”
