Building Tales with Syd and Friends

Building Tales with Syd and Friends is the first book published by Construct-a-Venture, a collaboration between Megan Rothrock, author of the LEGO Adventure Books and James Foulds, ex-LEGO Community Manager.

It's a comic strip book in which array of weird and whacky brick-built characters who inhabit colourful and varied environments introduce young readers to building techniques and ideas. There are also instructions for a number of mini-models scattered throughout as well.

The 45-page paperback is very well produced with great photography and is a pleasure to flick through. There's not a lot in it for seasoned AFOLs but I suspect kids will enjoy it and take inspiration from the ideas, as is the intention of the authors.

You can view a couple of pages after the break and if you wish to buy it you can get paper copies on and for $7.99 / £6.15 and Kindle versions for even less.

Some of the characters are quite cool and it's a shame that instructions for them are not provided. Perhaps they'll be made available on the duo's website in the future.

Thanks to Megan for providing a copy to review. All opinions expressed are my own.

By in Latvia,

A good book for kids, hope more like this will be released.

By in United States,

Yay Megs is back!

By in United Kingdom,

Looks good but it is a shame you can't get Mixels anymore because they would be great to go with this (going by what Syd looks like).

By in Norway,

Picked up the kindle edition, and was slightly dissolved (despite the price) - table of contents is just numbers, while it has several “stories” inside
Also the quality trade off for size is a bit too harsh when making an all black camera up close in one step.

Agree with Bookmum that my first thought was “oh Mixels”, but some of he new classic sets and a selection of Ninjago mechs should also enable of characters.
