LEGO Riddles: Answers and Winners

Posted by ,

We recently published some LEGO riddles and invited Brickset readers to solve them. Three winners have now been picked at random from among those who provided the correct answer.

Find the solutions to each riddle and those three winners after the break...

Riddle Answers

  • Modular set from renowned theme, with splendid sand green colour scheme.

Answer: 10185 Green Grocer

  • Blue and grey with crater baseplate, its famous number ends with an eight.

Answer: 928 Space Cruiser and Moonbase

  • Two decade set with Vader's debut, back again in two thousand and two.

Answer: 7150 TIE Fighter & Y-wing

N.B. We have also accepted the answer 7152 TIE Fighter & Y-wing which was given by some, thereby increasing the final total by two. While the intention was to refer to the original set from 1999, I can also understand why some people would have chosen the re-released version.

  • One design for the Dark Knight's cave, where Bane and Ivy misbehave.

Answer: 6860 Batcave

  • Ancient temple of Egyptian design, Hotep protects Anubis' shrine.

Answer: 5988 The Temple of Anubis

  • Forest bandits defend their keep, surrounded by this river deep.

Answer: 6077 Forestmen's River Fortress

  • Heartlake stay in twenty fifteen, grandiose scale was unforeseen.

Answer: 41101 Heartlake Grand Hotel

  • Thunder arrives with hornet shades, accompanied by whirling blades.

Answer: 5542 Black Thunder

  • Colourful stripes adorn this train, almost unmatched and released again.

Answer: 4558 Metroliner

  • Choral set with Technic complexion, its bulldog mascot deserving mention.

Answer: 42078 Mack Anthem

Winners

Summing those ten set numbers gives a total of 130467, which is the correct answer! As previously mentioned, we have also accepted 130469.

42% of entrants submitted those correct answers and the winners, along with their respective prizes, are as follows:

  • Frostvik - 75249 Resistance Y-wing Starfighter
  • Palvone - 70825 Queen Watevra's Build Whatever Box!
  • Rusticjohn - 70418 J.B.'s Ghost Lab

Congratulations to each of you and to everyone who answered the riddles correctly! The winners will be contacted via email shortly.

We have been delighted with your response to the original article and will definitely be publishing more LEGO riddles and puzzles in the near future, sometimes with prizes and sometimes just for fun.

Look out for the first of those articles next week!

By in United Kingdom,

Wouldn't have guessed 4558 Metroliner, quite a few train have stripes, thankfully I forgot to enter anyway!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

I wasn't able to figure out the last three ones. Well done! :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Well looks like I picked the rights ones at least, admit though the train one nearly threw me.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

Congrats to the winners! Good to know I got all 10 correct!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Don't suppose there are any prizes left for those who only got 7 right and didn't enter :-) I managed to get 147298. I would say great competition but it was too difficult for me. But great that some people got some Lego for free and hopefully most people had a little bit of fun and enjoyed reminiscing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Aw dang, I got the first one wrong xD I did even consider the green grocer, but wasn't sure if it was sand green *enough* to match the clue, so branched out from the Creator Expert theme to find something that was more predominately sand green.

All the others I got right, though ^^ Some I knew right away what set was being referred to, while others took me a bit of research to find. Although I must admit, Black Thunder stumped me for a while, until I realised I had been interpreting the clue too literally!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Wowsa! Look at that, winner! Really chuffed, great little competition. No 8 was the tough one, spent a long time looking through Johnny Thunder sets trying to find something that made sense...

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Quite chuffed, only got the Metroliner question wrong. Of course as my answer put me 5675 out from the correct answer it's all a bit irrelevant how many i got wrong but chuffed none the less.

congrats to the winners.

By in United Kingdom,

Thunder arrives with hornet shades, accompanied by whirling blades.

I went for 7417 - it has Johnny Thunder, the blades of the propeller in a yellow and black (hornet colours) plane.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Congratulations to the winners!

I couldn’t work out the ‘Thunder arrives...’ one and didn’t enter.

@CCC, Good guess! I think you were unlucky.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Congrats to the winners! I got them all correct.

Gravatar
By in Philippines,

I grew up with the black thunder in 1998 but how could I not know the riddle? My childhood is completely ruined. Insert sad face

But its a fun challenge. Looking forward to the next one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really fun! Got them all after a bit of thought. Congrats to the winners.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I went for the re-release of the metroliner. Also, I got number 3 wrong; I interpreted it as the 2002 UCS star destroyer. There was a similar set released this year, the 20th anniversary of Lego Star Wars, and Vader first appeared in the very first Star Wars movie boarding the Tantive IV from an ISD. The real answer is probably better, though.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

That was fun. Got all of them :)
Would be curious as to the actual number of entrants.

Gravatar
By in United States,

10/10!

Gravatar
By in Malaysia,

@Mosquitosquisher7 I thought exactly the same thing for number 3 - everything matched!

I also got the Thunder one wrong though - I went with some drill thing that had Thunder in the name.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Number 8 tripped me up.

I had guessed 76016 for it.

Anybody else?

@Huw Do this type of contest again!!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the prize. Thats a great surprise to see today. It was good fun trying to work out the clues for this treasure hunt competition. Hopefully they'll be more in the future

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got them all right expect guessed Hurricane Heist for 8, after I found no sets with Johnny Thunder wearing sunglasses.

Gravatar
By in United States,

10/10, and I'm surprised at the confusion on a couple, especially no. 3: "Two-decade set", which I interpreted as 20 years old, so a 1999 set, and deduced that "released again in 2002" identified the original as the correct answer since the answer didn't ask directly about the rerelease.
And if you simply type in "Thunder" in the Brickset search bar the helicopter is like the 5th one down.
As a music teacher, the number of people who were thrown off by the "Choral" adjective for the Mack ANTHEM is heartbreaking.
This was fun, Huw, please do another one or something like it.

Gravatar
By in Taiwan,

I had a lot of fun on solving this riddles and I was so proud when I figured out what 8,9,10 were referring to:D However I got the first riddle wrong :cc... Why can't it be Statue of Liberty?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Was so sure that 8 was 8117. Storm in the name implies thunder, insect theme with black and yellow, and literal scimitars for the rotors :(

Gravatar
By in Poland,

That was a pretty fun exercise to test my Lego knowledge!
Got everything right except for number 8, I was sure it was going to be 8117 Storm Lasher, since it literally has swords for its rotor blades and an insectoid-like mini bot attached to its back.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I enjoyed this quiz and played it for fun. 10/10 BTW.
No. 10 took me a while, since I don't have the set yet and didn't initially realise that the hood ornament is actually a bulldog. I had started by treating bulldog as a more cryptic clue for a traditionally British mascot/emblem. Once I found that part, the clue made complete sense.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Alan93239 that one was hard for me too. I considered the statue of liberty for a long while but went with green grocer cuz the statue is not a modular. Was a bit confused by the "renowned theme" though

Gravatar
By in Finland,

The helicopter one is so obscure I don't even feel dumb for not knowing it

Gravatar
By in United States,

Got 10/10 but like others was stumped for awhile on 8 and 10, w/10 being the hardest for me. I had to friggin google "Choral" lol. Good times, Brickset, good times :)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Enjoyed this - clue 1, 9 and 10 were the trickiest (as someone mentioned there were a few trains with stripes!). Got them in the end though - thanks Brickset database and Google! :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Yeah missed number 8. Hornet shades could be sunglasses or yellow and block colors. It sent me looking for either Johnny Thunder 7417 in a yellow and black plain, or a set with Hawkeye in it with hornet shades on his face. Quite the wild goose chase with nothing at the end.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Didn't take part in the end but glad I got all but one (6860) right.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't win, but I got all the answers right, so that still makes me feel awesome! :D

Gravatar
By in United States,

When I couldn't find a suitable Johnny Thunder set to fit clue 8 and realized that Ninjago wasn't represented I convinced myself that "Thunder" was a cryptic clue for Jay. I seriously over complicated that one.

To my credit I was looking for a Ninjago helicopter type set with Jay included.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

@mroper295 Same, my first guess for this one was 70614 Lightning Jet, but then I realised that "hornet shades" meant black and yellow color scheme, so ultimately I went with 8117 Storm Lasher for the reasons I had mentioned higher up.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Like @CCC I went with Johnny thunder in a bi plane for 8 - set 7417

Finally understand the hornet shades - colors of a hornet, black and yellow. Ah well, next time.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Good job, @CapnRex101! It looks like everyone had fun participating, and are kicking themselves now they know the answers :-)

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Whoop whoop, got 'em all!

Most I could guess right away, by name or theme if not by number. 5542 turned by with a chance search for "thunder".

Gravatar
By in Bulgaria,

I thought 76084 The Ultimate Battle for Asgard was Thor (thunder) in the spaceship (hornet shades) and Hela's whirling blades from the movie.

Gravatar
By in Bosnia And Herzegovina,

I'm glad I got them all correct, but can someone explain the choral clue.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Nice--I got them all! Even if I didn't win anything, it's nice to know that I didn't miss anything.

@Marin_23: An anthem is a song that's often sung by a chorus.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Loved this one! <3 It took me max 30 minutes to research them all, hope to see some higher difficulty next time! ;)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I didn't win, but I got all the questions right and that's more important anyway!

I second what others are saying, this was well done and lots of fun--I'd even do this without prizes, just for the notoriety. Maybe call out the winners and encourage people to read their reviews or lists or something--personally, I wouldn't a little publicity for mine.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Shoot, I got number 3 wrong. My first thought was 7150 as well (the very first Star Wars sets came out when I came out of my dark ages), but like @Mosquitosquisher7 , I over complicated things and decided upon 10198 Tantive IV because that is where Vader first appeared in the movies.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hmm, got them all except for number 6. I recalled 6077 being called Robin's Lake Stronghold in the UK, so I dismissed that as a possible correct answer. Instead I used 6071(Forestmen's Crossing), as the base plate clearly shows a river next to the building.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Goddamnit, that’s what the answer to that last one was! It seems so obvious now I know the answer...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Siiiiiiigh... I missed eight and nine. This contest was still a ton of fun. Please continue to do awesome challenges like this and congrats to the winners!

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

Thank you @CapnRex101 for the fun challenge, I almost gave up on 8 and 10.
Feels great to have a win on my birthday. :)

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got the hornet one wrong. Ah, well.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Shame I missed it, but I enjoyed the challenge anyway. By the way, did anyone think of the Parisian Restaurant instead of Green Grocer ;).

Gravatar
By in United States,

Got them all! Can't wait for more.

Gravatar
By in United States,

^ I had considered the Parisian Restaurant, but ultimately went with Green Grocer due to it being the first modular to incorporate sand green.

When considering all the clues together, it became apparent that the answers focused more towards the first occurrence among these sets where multiple choices could fit the result - particularly where riddles 1, 3, and 9 were involved.

Satisfied I managed to get all these correct - seems I had an easier time identifying the ones most people struggled with, and only balked at the ones that had rereleased sets.

Great fun, looking forward to more of these quizzes/riddles!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I was wrong with the vader set. I thought it was this one: 75227-1: Darth Vader Bust
As in 20 year anniversary of lego star wars.

Train with colorfull stripes: I went for the christmas train as it was released two times ;)

8/10

ps: fun competition

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was a fun article.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

This competition was great fun! Hope we get another one like this.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Cool! Got 'em all...though I was a 'plus 2' on the one question. I spent WAY too much time on that one. LOL! Lots of fun! Thank you!

Gravatar
By in United States,

This was so fun! Congrats to all the winners!

@CCC I was thinking of Johnny Thunder for 8 too! I ended up picking 70815, thinking Thunder = Johnny Thunder, Hornet shades = Batman, Whirling blades = Green Ninja

Gravatar
By in United States,

1. I just pulled up the Modular theme and started checking them for sand-green. I think there were three sets, but the Green Grocer is the one with the most sand-green

@TheWackyWookiee:
I did...but then I noticed it was olive-green and I was able to rule it out.

2. Looked up sets that came with crater plates, and there was only one that ended in "8".

3. Looked up "Darth Vader" minifigs, checked the one with the lowest minifig number, and it comes in both 7150 and 7152. And that's about the point when the "two decade" bit hit me. You know, because it's not like they released five 20th Anniversary sets or whatever...

4. There's only one Batcave that comes with both of those minifigs.

5. Searched for Hotep…and ran into a roadblock because Bricklink lists the set as "Pharaoh's Forbidden Ruins", while Brickset has it as "Temple of Anubis". This was the one I skipped over and came back to after I had the rest.

6. Looked up the Forestmen theme. There's River Fortress and River Crossing, but one has the river surrounded by the keep, and the other has the keep surrounded by the river.

7. Heartlake tells you it's Friends, and the largest set by far has "grand" in the name.

8. Looked for Thunder expecting to hit a Ninjago set (forgot about Johnny Thunder), but the helicopter was at the top of the results. There was also a Constraction figure that met the hornet part of the clue, but I couldn't identify any whirling blades.

9. This is the one answer I got wrong, but I submit that the Santa Fe Super Chief is a _BETTER_ answer to this question than the Metroliner. The initial batch of Super Chiefs had sequential _UNMATCHED_ engine numbers, and then they released it _AGAIN_ with matched engine numbers. The stripes are bigger, and far more colorful than the Metroliner, which I briefly considered but ruled out because the color scheme is so very, very, extremely grey.

10. Searched for "bulldog", and everything else fit, but it wasn't until after I had submitted my answer that I really noticed that the set name includes the word "anthem". So the "choral" clue is the last thing I figured out.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got them correct! But I don't win. Sad face. Oh well, can't win them all. Or any of them*shrug*

Gravatar
By in Australia,

@Huw Just out of curiosity any chance we can get the total number of entries and the number of correct entries? And perhaps, if it isn't too long, a list of usernames that submitted a correct answer?

Thoroughly enjoyed this by the way, a great general knowledge quiz that makes you think a bit and even learn a thing or two along the way.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Thanks for taking the time to run this competition! For the next instalment please do consider building in some checks in the system that lets participants see if they made a mistake. For example, organizing the set numbers on a crossword-like grid would let us see if we got it wrong but would give at most a few digits of clues.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I picked the wrong Metroliner (10001 in stead of 4558) but managed to get 7 correct answers. The other two I wasn't even close so it seems ;-)

Gravatar
By in Italy,

Well, at least I answer correctly to all the riddles

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Had them all and then changed nr 1 from green grocer to 10251 Brick Bank.

A pity when sets are so similar and the riddle can point to both. It becomes more of a gambling game then.
You only have to be so lucky to choose the right one.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought that number 8 was referring to Johnny Thunder, didn't even know that Black Thunder existed.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I made 2 mistakes and I couldn't find the second set.
Congrats to the winners.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I got 9 out of 10.
In number 3 when it said back again in 2002 I was thinking that that was the year it was released so I said set 8010.
Great contest tho, I think if Brickset does it again that they should make the prizes a little bit better and maybe include some more riddles or some from recent sets instead all older ones.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I messed up on the SW one, got the rest though.
