City Advent Calendar - Day 5
Posted by Huw,Those of you that don't buy City Fire sets will find a new and very nice part behind today's door...
Today we have a log and an axe. I suppose it's just about fitting for the season given that trees are cut for logs to put on fires in many parts of the world.
The axe is a new piece introduced this year in a number of City Fire sets so if, like me, you don't buy them, it'll be the first one you own. It's a very nice piece but does look more like a fireman's axe than one used for felling trees.

This was quite an underwhelming surprise for me. A stump and an axe just isn’t very interesting in my honest opinion. I mean yeah the axe looks interesting but there isn’t much you can do with an axe and a stump other than just chopping off the entire dead tree. Something more original and interesting would’ve been nicer. 2/5
In this case, the axe is meant to "split" the smaller logs for fire wood, not chop down trees.
The 2x2 stump is just the chopping block to chop the wood on, not meant as firewood itself.
But there aren't half 1x1 round bricks so LEGO been using round bricks as firewood for a while now.
I don't mind the axe being a "Fire Axe" this time, it even looks closer to a splitting axe/maul compared to the older style black handaxes they have in LEGO sets.
If you search Splitting Axe/Maul images, some even have a red/silver axehead.
December's City magazine has a lumberjack figure with a log rack and chainsaw to cut bigger logs , basicly a smaller version of the log rack in 60181: Forest Tractor
Yeah, I think it was a little bit underwhelming, but it's still a nice piece of winter scenery. The axe is pretty enough.
like the day before, an artificially increased part count (plates instead of a brick)
I hope no one has lost their loo roll under the sofa. Their minifig will need it after that "log".

Yeah I hate when lego is cheeky like that
I was so disappointed when my 4-year old opened this, thinking to myself, "That's it?" He, on the other hand, was pretty excited about having an axe. He put it in the hands of Day 3's sweeper (whose parka hood has already disappeared into our sofa) and proceeded to chop up the log, the snow castle, the random Lego creation he had been working on and our family dog (who ran back into her crate).
It's interesting to me how our reactions to each days' builds have differed so wildly. I prefer his enthusiastic perspective. :)
Ooh that's a nice axe.
That axe is pretty awesome.
Wait, is this the City calendar's equivalent to the Star Wars calendar's weapon racks?
Warning, spoilers for the 6th below...
My guess that the tree must come soon was confirmed immediately, and it combines relatively well with this build, turning it from fire wood chopping to chopping down the Christmas tree.
