City Advent Calendar - Day 23

Posted by ,

Just two windows to go now so we should see Santa tomorrow and perhaps an accessory for him today...

Today's window contains a delightful husky and sled, perfect for Santa to zip around in the frozen sub-artic wilderness of Lapland!

The white printing around the dog's head lets it down a bit, unfortunately, and the photo accentuates how bad it looks. It would have been better with just eyes and nose print.

The method used to attach the sled to the canine isn't ideal, either...

Hey, it's the requisite dog! The City version 9d the weapons rack.

The sled is a nice twist though.

It’s not a real dog; it’s a dog with a wind up key it’s back, and the sled is not a sled; it’s a ride seat that spins around as the wound key on the dog’s back unwinds. At least that’s what *I* see.

(Honestly though, it is a cute calendar build and gift.)

That printing.... ooft, how standards have fallen.

I have multiple of such dogs and amount/positioning on the grey/white plastic is different for each.

The more grey is on the head/printing part, the more see-through the printing becomes.

We had a mishap on the 21st where my 4-year old opened 23 instead; so today he built the 21st's telescope instead. Afterwards, when he planned for the next day and realized it was the 24th, he said, "I bet tomorrow is Santa! See, there's a Santa on the box! I hope tomorrow is Santa!" :D

This is the first year we've done the Lego Advent Calendars, and I've loved/hated it: I love how excited he is about each day, and how proud he is putting the builds together himself. The part I hate is how he's been waking earlier and earlier every morning because of his excitement!

Does anyone else feel like maybe Lego should consider retiring some of the Advent Calendar themes? This year's Harry Potter has been a burst of creativity, while some of the City builds have been pretty sad compared to prior years. I feel like "every Advent Calendar needs a sled" combined with "we have to redesign it completely every year" is leading to some bad outcomes.

I think this year's City Calendar still was an improvement over 2018 (my first one), which had many microscale toys which to me are worse then tables, lamps, clocks and fireplaces.

That said, if LEGO had another non-licensed Castle, Pirate or Space theme , having a Calendar for those would be nice.

But Star Wars and Harry Potter just seem to have priority right now, but licensed themes are just not my thing.

LEGO had a Castle & Pirates Advent Calendars in the past but those were in 2008(Castle) 2009 (Pirates) 2010 (Kingdoms) long before I returned to LEGO.

I see that one Frozen set features a baby reindeer. I wonder if it could be repainted for future advent calendars instead of the dog.

Husky! I love these little guys.

Well, I liked the husky because, honestly, you can never have too many of them.

But I agree this year's advent calendar ... while it hasn't been bad ... it's been a little underwhelming.

The thing that most bothered me? Once you got past the projectile pizza oven, every other gift was pictured on the box. An advent calendar should have that sense of surprise. But if you know exactly what you're going to get, 10 days out from the end, then it's kinda pointless. I didn't enjoy that aspect.
