Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 13

Posted by ,

Various interesting models have emerged from the Harry Potter Advent Calendar during recent days. They have been developing an impressive Hogwarts scene.

I am wondering whether this environment may continue to expand today...

Our third Hogwarts house banner represents Ravenclaw and its design is consistent with those on day five and day nine, featuring an attractive reddish brown, black and pearl gold colour scheme. Moreover, the blue and pearl silver flags look superb together and accurately replicate Ravenclaw's colours which appear onscreen, although bronze replaces silver in the books.

The pearl silver flag has only otherwise appeared with the earlier Slytherin banner. Even so, these flags are particularly repetitive and I think they should have been packaged in pairs. I expect this would have been achievable as each banner only comprises eight pieces.

Overall - 2.5 - This model looks splendid and I am pleased that Ravenclaw is represented in the Advent Calendar, although the banners are becoming somewhat boring.

Ravenclaw is the best house, so I welcome these. I agree they could have been put in pairs. Every day can’t be a winner I guess.

On the bright side, only one out of the next 11 days will be a banner. Also concur with Teenage Brickster that we will probably see some different things at least in the next few days.

So these are the winning party colors then?

Shouldn't the silver flag be bronze?

Blue flags have appeared in way more than 7 sets. That's only the "element id" nonsense, LEGO giving each mold and color combination a new number every few years. Brickset gets its part information from Lego.com, hence the part information on Brickset is all messed up. I'm baffled why some users said they preferred the Brickset catalog over the Brcklink catalog. Brickset's catalog has massive holes, many, many mold, color, and print omissions, and doesn't have inventory at all for sets released before the 90s. And it's not Brickset's fault, this is part data from Lego's electronic catalog! I wonder if they bought Bricklink to use their much better catalog internally instead.

@Norikins - Thank you, I have updated the article. Hopefully LEGO will improve their parts catalogue in future.

When will the riddles be back?

@Norikins. You are correct, there is another 'Bright Blue' flag indistinguishable from this one that occurred in 37 sets. This is one thing that bothers me about the Brickset database. I often use the database to see how many items of a particular part that I have. But identical parts using an older mold are not counted as the same. As previously mentioned, it's not Brickset's fault, they are using data from LEGO. However, perhaps something can be done in the programming of this database to consider or alert the fact that there are identical parts (albeit from an older mold).

Battle of the Licensed Advent Calendars continues. We are now entering the back half of the advent competition and fittingly, after 12 days and for the first time this season, the score is all tied. The first half has seen some pleasant highs and bizarre lows on both calendars. Recently though, SW is on a hot streak while HP has gone cold. That said, let’s take a look at the offerings on a pivotal Day 13.

Behind the door for Day 13 of the HP calendar is…another flag. Quickly becoming “The-Gift-That-Shall-Not-Be-Named”, the calendar has now established a pattern of mediocrity with respect to this “gift.” We’ve seen a variant on Days 5, 9, and now 13. Will we see another on Day 17? We will have to wait to find out. This Ravenclaw flag gives us another pearl silver offering which is welcome but at this point, it won’t help its case in a race this close.

On the flip side, the SW calendar produced a new version of the Mouse Droid. The author rightfully points out that the grey core looks awkward but the design is novel in its simplicity. That said, this offering is not the strongest by any stretch of the imagination.

Again, on what turned out to be a pivotal day, both calendars lacked punch and slightly let down their respective fans. But based on a score of 3/5 vs 2.5/5 and also on HP's repetitive offering, SW walks away with the point on Day 13. And with that, SW takes the lead for the first time this holiday season. The score is now:

SW- 7
HP- 6

To be continued…

This is actually the best set of flags so far. Silver is exclusive and blue is less common than green or red. Decent stuff.

I for one welcome our fluttery overlords... Okay not really. They are quite nice banners, but definitely should've been paired, like the two little trees from Day 3.

I've got to say reading this every morning has been greatly enjoyable and I am now very much invested in the high stakes battle between the Advent Calendars.

This joins yesterday's gift in the "I'll open it when I can bring myself to bother" pile.

Will I bother before the fourth (and final?) flag?

Three down, one to go.

I wonder how many days the fireplace will be spread over.

Haha :D

I’m (along with my kids) a huge HP and lego HP fan, l think the 2018, and some 2019 sets are amazing, but l am soooo happy l didnt buy any advent calendar this year, especially this one.
Banners at least could be printed. And btw they don’t even reflect the true colors…

By in Sweden,

I don't mind the concept of 4 banners to represent each of the houses, especially since we're building a great hall scene, but it would have been nice if each banner would have had a different design. Really nice examples are presented in the Harry Potter Build your own Adventure book.

Yawn. My wife is building this and she's not impressed by the repetition, especially for something so bleh in the first place.

By in United States,

I'm overall pleased with the HP calendar for the most part. As someone previously mentioned we were able to see images of what would be included in each calendar. I thought the fact that it was themed to set a scene was really nice and plan to add much of it to the Great Hall. I thought the banners would be presented in sets of two on two different days rather than spread out over 4 different days. I'm figuring we'll be seeing 2 days that are just piles of gift box builds so those will be snoozers too. I gave up on the SW one a few years back when I decided that other than the exclusive, but not always, figures it was mostly only good for spare parts. This year I'm opening last years SW calendar that I got at 1/2 off after the holiday along with the current versions of the other three. I'm not overly impressed with either Friends or City so far this year. I miss the little food stand builds we got for a couple of years a few years back in the City ones. They were always my favorite.

By in Canada,

This reminds me of the lackadaisical and very much lamented 2012 limited run Friends Advent Calendar. That too was rushed out the door, from what I recall, so much so that they didn't manufacture nearly as much as the other Calendars of that year making it harder to come by.

Thus the models were poorly received, the limited nature of the set made many quite unforgiveable towards LEGO on the whole and the poor decision to include a single day of hair accessories carried over for at least four years, with two of those years being the baking accessories instead making for some bad yearly repetitive experiences.

But Friends learned from its shaking first year and grew better as time went on. I suspect Harry Potter might get better if given half a chance, but considering there are now four Advent Calendars this year instead of the typical three I'm not so sure if that trend will continue. I suppose it depends on the sales of HP and the willingness to forgive a first year learning experience by the designers before moving on to more time to tackle a proper and more impressive looking Advent Calendar.

I mean McGonagall wasn't even a new print, and it was a chance to give us a Yule Ball version to go with the Clock Tower, but they did not. Which isn't too bad, honestly, but I'm optimistic enough to believe that if they continue with four going forward in 2020, then we may see much more impressive building days from the HP set next year.
