Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

The impressive chessboard which arrived on day sixteen is probably my favourite model from the Harry Potter Advent Calendar, thus far. Another such item would be welcome today.

Let's open the door and find out...

We have been anticipating our fourth Hogwarts house banner and the final such model has emerged today. These yellow and black flags represent Hufflepuff which has been notably underrepresented in previous Harry Potter sets and I welcome this addition to the calendar, although something absolutely distinctive would have been even better.

However, the banners do look appealing when displayed together and their consistent combination of reddish brown, black and pearl gold is marvellous. Furthermore, this should conclude our collection of banners, meaning that the last seven days of the Advent Calendar may include more interesting items.

Overall - 3.0 - Hufflepuff appearing in LEGO sets is always pleasing and the banners look marvellous together, although they should definitely have been packaged in pairs.

I hope the Star Wars offering is something really good today, like a minifigure. It is better to lose big and have SW "waste" the victory on a desirable minifigure or build rather than have them squeak by with something that sucks just a little bit less. That way, there is a better chance of getting the win tomorrow. At least the banners are complete now, and there is still a solid week of something else yet to come.

The banner ranking based on color of the flags is, from worst to best, Gryffindor, Hufflepuff, Ravenclaw, Slytherin.

My favorite decorating piece from the House of Blacktron collection.

I've been using the spare gold stud as an extra stabilizer on the bottom. This will be useful if I can get some 2x2 jumper tiles to put them on when I eventually make a Hogwarts Yule display....

Anyway, despite the repetitiveness of these builds...look, like flags are nice, even if they're not a minifigure. They're actually relevant to the world of Potter and much more useful than the Star Wars weapons racks.

And we're right back to rubbish. At least this is the last one?

[Potential spoilers removed] I hope there will be a miniature castle and Hagrid's hut.

Battle of the Licensed Advent Calendars continues. HP fans are riding into Day 17 after securing three consecutive points and are feeling more confident than they have all holiday season. Will Day 17 see them bolster their lead or will SW put an end to the point streak? Let’s find out.

Behind Day 17’s door is another house flag, this time, Hufflepuff. This is now entry number 4 in “the gift that shall not be named” series. Whether the flags are as bad as originally surmised can be debated, but what cannot be debated is that this is the fourth time fans have built the same design. It’s simply not good enough, and as many fans have pointed out, placing the flags in pairs behind the same window would have been much more welcome. I for one cannot add much more only to say that the flag-saga has now come to a close and from here on in, the offerings should be as novel as they are diverse.

On the flip side, SW fans were presented with a buildable escape pod. The design while relatively simple uses unique techniques as the reviewer points out. The presence of pearl silver comes to represent the engines is very welcome as these pieces are rarer in this color. Although this might not be the strongest offering it is recognizable, uses unique techniques, and includes rare parts- all ingredients for a healthy offering.

In conclusion, today’s point goes to SW- based both on score and on the repetitive nature of HP’s offering. If there’s a pearl silver lining for HP fans, it’s that the flags are finished and the remaining 7 days should be much more exciting. With the win, SW cuts the lead down to a single point and refuses to give in. This battle should be exciting until the very end. The score is now:

HP- 9
SW- 8

To be continued...

Well I'm glad I got my wish that the final banner make it's appearance today. Now we should have some nice builds finishing out the final week. Hopefully they are good enough to beat out the SW calendar.

Phew, I think the banners have stopped now!
Now we have one for each house!

I'm rather glad to get the Hufflepuff banner today. Finally, my Great Hall feels complete. Not sure how this boring pod from the Star Wars calendar is better, really. Sure, the build is repetitive, but since it's supposed to be a blank comparison to the offering of the other calendar I'd still vote for this one.

They really should've forgotten Hufflepuff, like Rowling did. :D
