Harry Potter Advent Calendar - Day 22

Posted by ,

Two lovely models have been combined to good effect within recent days. I hope the newest item will prove similarly enjoyable as we approach the conclusion of this calendar.

My expectations are certainly high...

Four wonderful presents emerge today, featuring the signature colours of each Hogwarts House! The colours are immediately recognisable and correspond with the earlier banners. I appreciate the varied shapes and wrapping, although the parcels for Gryffindor and Ravenclaw share the same construction techniques. The result is undoubtedly effective.

Moreover, these two packages incorporate printed envelopes which connect to the studs on top. These tiles have only otherwise appeared in 75958 Beauxbatons' Carriage: Arrival at Hogwarts. I am delighted to see them again here because their antiquated aesthetic appears wholly consistent with the Wizarding World, although they could prove useful for other themes too and include outstanding detail.

Overall - 4.5 - Wrapped presents have appeared in copious Advent Calendars and these examples are exceptional, exhibiting clear connections with the Harry Potter theme.

Four presents in one day? That's surely got to be one of the doors with the most pieces so far...

26 pieces in one doors. Nice number of pieces, but not the highest one in this calendar. Big Christmas Tree had about 32 pieces as I remember.

@The_Teenage_Brickster - Presents are an appropriately festive item and demonstrate consistent theming with the Wizarding World, hence that score. Only the fact that presents are so common within Advent Calendars kept them from deserving full marks, in my opinion.

I wish we had a better representation of bows than the clip piece (and what the Star Wars calendar does in tomorrow's window). I wonder if there'd be a decent way to get a Friends bow on there.

4 presents in a single window! Unprecedented!

I have to say, I'm disappointed I didn't get this calendar. It really is the best of the four.

Four gifts is indeed generous, and those two unique printed pieces are really nice as well. I still think the chess set is likely the build with the most pieces in a single day, but I could be wrong.

I am deeply annoyed with LEGO by today. The fact they could include all four House Gifts in a single day makes me seriously irritated that we wasted three slots for the same banner build when they could have included all four in one day, or two per day leaving another door for something more unique and interesting. The design of this Calendar has been frustratingly disappointing and yet the overall thematic nature of the Great Hall decorations makes for a nice look. I still wish we could have gotten a better distribution for those House Banners though. Even if all it meant was getting another repeat table build.

Now if only the banners were this generous... At least they didn't make the same mistake twice!

(Looks at the two identical tables)

...Er, three times.

Four presents in one day and they look amazing! This is maybe Lego’s best advent in years.

Nothing special, but well done. And they certainly bolster the argument that the flags could and should have been condensed.

Today is a weird reversal of the usual dynamic between this and SW, with HP bringing the solid but a bit unexciting gift, while SW has produced something great to trump it.

I think this is the first day with no extra pieces since the first food day with the turkey.

I'm pretty sure the printed envelope tiles also appeared in the Doctor Strange 76060 set too...

I think they were white?

Shouldn't the ravenclaw present (& banner) be blue and bronze/brown? Or was that different in the films?

The films use Blue/Silver and a Raven for Ravenclaw, unlike the Blue/Bronze Eagle of the books.

@Huw - This is the one I bought!
And to others, I don't see the problem with the banners when we got some wonderful silver and gold flags on those days, not to mention generous amounts of other brown and gold pieces.

If you are lucky maybe you can find it heavily discounted in a shop, I got the city one more than 50% off ;)

I am looking forward to next years calendar since this year was something Lego put together in the last minute because of the popularity of the theme. Next year they will have better time to prepare so it is probably even better :D

@Huw:
I don't have much of a history with advent calendars. Mostly I've just bought two copies of every Star Wars calendar up until the year they focused exclusively on the sequel trilogy (skipped that one completely, bought only one copy of the last two years, and still haven't opened either of them). On the strength of the reviews alone (and the realization that it really does form a cohesive scene), I've bought eleven copies of the HP calendar. I've been cramming the builds from one copy in three per day, unloaded the six characters from nine copies, and plan to use several of the components and the extra set of minifigs to make a Hogwarts-themed park that I can put in our LUG's holiday season displays like I'd previously done with the Star Wars advent calendars.
