Ice-Cream Truck

©2020 LEGO Group

LEGO has uploaded images of the 1HY 2020 City sets to its server today so I have added them to our database for your delectation.

60253 Ice Cream Truck looks to be the best of the bunch. Surprisingly, it's City's first ice cream van. The Friends home town of Heartlake is awash with vendors of frozen treats but now, finally, every minifig can enjoy a lolly or a 99 Flake.

By in Germany,

My favorite is actually the Safari Adventure set, followed by the Tuning Workshop.
But this Ice Cream Van is a close third.

Quite a few great sets in this new wave actually imho. City appears to be on a good track currently. Lot of versatility, cool designs, the lot.

By in United States,

My main question is why we do not have 99 Flake in the U.S. They sound awesome!

Gravatar
By in Russian Federation,

Nothing clicks for me.

Well, maybe this little buggy looks cute.

By in Singapore,

As mentioned before, love the new City Mail torso, don't love that my 60100 torso is now obsolete and looks odd with these new torsos and the xtra Brick Stickers decals.

It'll be a toss-up between 60252 and the old 10734, I really want the dump truck of the older set, but it's hard to find on the secondary market.

Somehow, 60270 managed to have a better-looking police station than 60246.

By in Hungary,

I don't buy city usually, but the new safari set is really good at channeling nostalgia for 6672.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The great vehicles range is getting better and better.

Now we just need to get a post/mail van....

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

My for sure list of City: Ice Cream Truck, Safari Truck, Bulldozer Construction, Tunning Shop, Street Sweeper. There are still 8 unrevealed City sets......

I did wonder, hence the hyperlink!

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

The Ice cream truck does nothing for me for some reason. It's like a recycled pizza van with an odd colour scheme. I prefer the one from The Lego Movie.

The garage on the other hand is sweet!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Ice cream van even has a Mind That Child sticker!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Horrible overall - reminds me of the darkest days of City in the nineties / 2000s.
Ideas that should look good on paper end up being a bunch Playmobil.
I'm mainly a City collector, this year was so and so but 2020 looks like 1-2 sets max plus some printed parts from Bricklink.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Looks to me that Lego is really into racing in the new wave of sets. Six stud like the old Speed Champions sets. Wonder if they are moving the six stud racers to City to stay?

Gravatar
By in Austria,

Street Sweeper and Ice Truck will fit nicely into my Modular Building street setup.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The police and fire sets look awful.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

Safari Truck would've been excellent but alas it is just a bunch of stickers. On a good note though there seems to be enough stickers to turn a white horse into a zebra so my puma wouldn't go hungry.
Otherwize not a good slate, even the polybags are disappointing. Tuning Workshop, Ice Cream Truck, Street Sweeper, Postal Plane Delivery and the Safari Truck will suffice.

By in Canada,

why does everything look like a 4+ juniors set?

so many special parts so few "bricks"

looks bad, sorry to be negative :(

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Flakes are delicious but not very good for the waistline :~)

Now that LEGO owns BL, it should produce alternative sticker sheets for the Ice Cream Van and similar sets that are localised to various languages and currencies, and make those sheets available in an official LEGO BL store (Bricks & Pieces on BL).

Gravatar
By in United States,

When do these become available for purchase at retail?

"Looks to me that Lego is really into racing in the new wave of sets. Six stud like the old Speed Champions sets. Wonder if they are moving the six stud racers to City to stay?"
If they don't have licenses to use real car designs, that would seem rather pointless. The beauty of Speed Champions before they went 8-wide, was that we got licensed vehicles that fit Lego streets. And the 8-stud wide ones don't look any better. They gained nothing by breaking the format. Well, you can fit a second person but that's never been important for Lego scale. Kind of a shame they wrecked Speed Champions scale halfway through the line.

Gravatar
By in Poland,

is this lion is new animal in lego?

Gravatar
By in Sweden,

@yacoub I would disagree with your statement saying the 8-wide cars don't look better. Personally, I think they look much more realistic, but you can't really argue about 'taste' or 'perceived quality' I guess. I do agree though that 8-wide cars 'break' a few things (none I'm bothered about I admit)

By in United States,

It’s a good thing a few of the 2017 City sets are still available at Lego, most every set since then seems to belong in the Juniors/4+ range. R.I.P. Chase McCain

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Few good sets. The entire of the police and fire sets looks juniorized. The forest fire set vehicle looks like one from the awful Jack Stone line. Bad, just bad.

That is fine, because after all it's mostly juniors they are aimed at.

Now that is a great idea and this new Reply function is golden.

The interior of the Ice Cream truck looks quite empty.

Juniors is 4+
City is 5-12

That is quite a large gap - my son is 6, he would be offended to receive a Juniors set as he can read...

I still resent the branding decision they took last year when they blended Juniors into City. Oversimplifying and adding too many specialised bits ("water cannon", helicopter to some extent stud shooters as fire fighting equipment) doesn't really encourage creativity and rebuilding the world.

When do these sets release?

By in United States,

Safari Adventure is pure gold; for nostalgia and for being an excellent rendition of a modern City-style 6-wide SUV, w/the added bonuses of big cat and tree trunk pieces, all in a small affordable set! Happy, happy, joy, joy :) Really digging the Ice Cream Truck, Service Station, and most of all (except you my little Safari sugar baby) Tuning Workshop. Honorable mention goes to Racing Cars, the sweet dark green bike in Stunt Team, Street Sweeper and the old school looking Postal Plane Delivery. In all very happy w/this wave. The only way it could get any better would be if real 99 Flakes found their way to the US!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

a 99 flake? Don't you mean a $100 flake ;)

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

@Huw: Well, the cars in 60256 (and its predecessors 60053 and 60113) are also 5+ cars, and they retain the build complexity seen in those older sets. The police and fire builds in this wave are noticeably more simplified, while still targeting the same age range. It seems there is a lower and upper bound and the police and fire sets are more accurately targeting 4-going-5 kids whereas the rest are targeting 5-going-6 kids. So lumping both categories into the 5+ range, as LEGO has done, seems pretty short-sighted on their part.

Another way to interpret the age recommendations is not by age alone but by purpose. For example perhaps the police and fire sets are designed to be put together relatively quickly so kids can get started playing sooner, while the rest are designed with the building experience in mind, adding slight complexity to engage builders without being daunting or tiring.

No, LEGO has done lions before but it is the first System lion if that’s what you’re asking. LEGO has also done big cats for System before using the same mould but not a lion. Having said that, the 2018 mountain lion (puma) can pass for a lioness at a pinch: https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/b/d/e/highres_465783038.jpeg

By in United States,

While the exterior of the police station looks much worse than its predecessors, I like the interior. That ping-pong table is great!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I really like the ice cream van and safari set, but I was really hoping for a stand alone ambulance set this year.

Does anyone else think that the woman in the safari set looks a lot like Pippin Reed from Adventurers? I think with the right helmet or hair piece she would fit right in with the new Johnny Thunder figure from the most recent CMF series.

I totally agree with you.

I'm sure many of these sets would be much more appropriate in a 2020 junior set list.

By in United Kingdom,

Need about three Ice Cream vans just to cover the car park of the Kwik-E-Mart so all my figures can enjoy their Mr Whippy with a 99. Or maybe they can have a Fab?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@MeganL - even better, there's a van in Southampton's Mayflower Park that has a triple dispenser so you can have the extraordinary delight of a Strawberry 99. you can even see the three taps in the van if you zoom in on Google Street View!
https://tinyurl.com/Strawb99
Maybe the spot where the last of the émigrés boarded the Mayflower is the closest the 99 ever got to the USA!!!

Gravatar
By in Poland,

Oh my goat! I haven't noticed that pigeon in 60250 Postal Plane before.
Can we have them sold in a pack of 100 to make the LEGO City more realistic? ;)

Lots of these new City sets go on my 'must buy' wishlist, I really like them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

The hat on one of the criminals in the Monster Truck Robbery is really great with the hair. Also, can 60251 stay upright on 3 wheels as shown in one of the images? What's up with all the race boats in recent years? I do love the rocket bike in the Tuning Workshop though.

It is good that City is switching fully to 6-wide cars finally. It's been mostly that way for a while, but there have still been some holdouts.

In all honesty, I will probably be buying like 3 of the postal plane because it's been a while since TLG has released a small plane that I like.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The little white bird was in a Frozen set, so it's nice to see it more widely available.
I really like the colour scheme of the racing cars, and the flying helicopters look more fun that the Ninjago flyers, even if there's not much 'LEGO' about them. Less likely to cause damage around the house or bring down the Christmas decorations, anyway!

The rest of the Police sets just seem to be exactly the same thing as the past five years.
I think the ice cream van is a bit derivative of the pizza van, and looks like it's got Family Guy on the roof.

The real star for me is the Safari land rover, though a bit more reference to the 70s set 699 would have made it more fun. Maybe they could have a go at re-creating the lovely blue 371 sea plane next...

Gravatar
By in United States,

I like the Postal Delivery Plane. Reminds me of the old Solo Trainer 6673

Gravatar
By in United States,

If only we would have got a new color of frozen popsicle. But glad to get a new food vendor truck— tho' thankful that the goofy "cool popsicle" sticker doesn't come pre-printed.

Is it because Cadbury’s chocolate is a rare thing in the U.S. ?

so when will the new modular be revealed...

Gravatar
By in France,

Compare 60257 to 6397 or the awesome 6378, today in the city theme, building are so bad. That's the same with police or fire station, hospital, etc...
BRING US THE BASE PLATE !!!!!!

this in safari set have orange eyes, in police station 2018 have blue eyes so its new

By in United Kingdom,

Brilliant and very refreshing creative sets!

Gravatar
By in Croatia,

Most of them really looks like they are for juniors, 4+. City should be for older kids (and would be better for us AFOLs).

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I like how over 100 Brickset users 'want' the sets that have no picture or description.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Minifig_Jez - the Cadbury chocolate in the U.S. is a different recipe than the UK and is horrible! I'm guessing if 99 Flake was there it wouldn't taste as good as it's supposed to.

Gravatar
By in France,

My city has a Hot Dogs vs Pizza war going on, with a few ice cream vendors feeding on the scraps... This ice cream van might be what puts them on the map!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I'm glad an ice cream van is being released, though I'm not sure about the thing on the roof of the van. What is it supposed to be?

I like the road sweeper.

I brought a 2008 7731 mail van and customised it for the UK, spraying it red and I'm fairly happy with it. The Plane looks quite basic and old-fashioned.

Apart from that, I think I'll give the rest a miss.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Pretty underwhelming. Every year I wait for useful buildings in the mid price range. But the city bank and service station are much too tiny. Police station is also a step backwards. Only the tuning shop is decent looking, but even this looks so small that I doubt a car fits into it. Some nice vehicle designs are ruined by bad color choices. Seems in 2020 my city will get a few MOC buildings instead of official sets.

Gravatar
By in Hong Kong,

good job lego, keep on stickers
so I won't buy lego anymore,
save money for other better toys, thx

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

60245 Monster Truck Robbery should be a telehandler instead!
60249 Street Sweeper has 2 blue cogs with round-hole.
The helicopters of 60244 and 60248 will be great for play value, albeit risky with Christmas decorations. They look like the rotor is not intended to be removed from the body.
Nice to see a magnet in 60243 and other themes, but a huge one would not fulfil AFOL train coupling aspirations. I wonder about the orientation of the poles and whether they can be opposed for levitation.
