United fans to be offered unique Red Devils minifigures

Posted by ,

Dylan Chow has posted pictures on Instagram showing this set of exclusive minifigures that will be available with purchases of 10272 Old Trafford in Asia (and everywhere),

The set replicates a statue of former club players George Best, Dennis Law and Bobby Charlton, who have all played a significant part in the club's history, that stands outside the ground.

It's not known whether Red Devils fans in the west will be offered a similar opportunity but I suspect they will be gutted if not.

Update: LEGO has confirmed that the offer will also be available in North America and Europe to purchasers of the set between 16/01/2020 and 31/01/2020.

Full details of the promotion can be found after the break.

Missed opportunity for a new combover hair piece? :D

Scum move if it ends up being Asia-only. Then again, fits perfectly with the shifted priorities of big football clubs.

I think the US LEGO stores will be getting this as well. My LEGO store already got the stadium and they showed me a giveaway with it. It looked exactly like this and it was in the packaging like the red brick. Oh and they had only 10 of these at there store so idk how many other stores will have.

Question: What's up with "Asia" exclusives? Why do they get special stuff? Lego is based in Denmark not China!

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't get it, just blank red torsos with white numbers on the back? Is that what their jersey's look like? Seems really boring to me.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If the figures aren't going to be metallic monochrome then the legs should at least be dual or triple moulded to represent the fact they are wearing shorts.
Considering western football teams have taken off in Asia only relatively recently I suspect the achievements of Best, Law & Charlton won't mean a lot to many potential customers.

By in France,

Asia is where both TLG and MUtd are aiming to grow.
I can appreciate European (or other) fans being disappointed but this is all about marketing

@Peter1999: it's not just Lego. There's been a dramatic shift in many arenas towards courting the Asian market. Even blockbuster films like the MCU offer exclusive content to Asian audiences. It's a huge market that companies are eager to tap, more and more every day. It makes perfect sense long term, given the wildly shifting global scene.

This is true: shouldn't soccer jerseys be wallpapered with more sponsorships, branding, and advertisements than a NASCAR race?

I didn't think Lego were doing regional exclusives anymore?

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

If this stays exclusive to the Asian market then the words of no more region exclusive sets will be met with Saw Guerrera speech when thr Imperial pilot was presented to him on the movie Rogue One.

@Huw: I curiously clicked to find “Full details of the promotion can be found after the break.”, only to find a Chinese advert. Sorry, but my Chinese isn’t too great unfortunately ;)

By in United Kingdom,

LOL promo of an English team in Asia only. If I were a Lego and MU fan living in Manchester and part of local fanbase, even then I could not get it and would be outraged. This is ridiculous, reckless money chasing on Lego's end.

I love the Chinese NYE sets, but when will Europe, the home of Lego get the same attention with such thematic releases? So many traditions here, but the only thing we get is Christmas.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Everyone knows that Manchester United is a very popular asian team.

Gravatar
By in United States,

If this was a UK-only promo for that set, I don't think anyone would blink an eye. ...but a China promo for a UK team? What. The. Eff?!

Sometimes Lego does things and I think, "Okay, that makes sense."
...and sometimes Lego does things and I can't figure out what they're thinking.

Gravatar
By in United States,

@inversion "when will Europe ... get the same attention?"

Maybe UK residents should lobby LEGO to make a set honoring their most iconic sports team. ;)

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

This might sound critical, but it looks like it was designed by a 7-year-old for an Ideas project that even his parents wouldn't vote for. Other than that I like it.

A mini-figure of their mascot probably would be more appealing to fans and non-fans.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

As a minifigure collector as well as a football fan, despite me not wanting the stadium, these would normally interest me..... that would be.... if they weren’t such a poor lazy design. I get they wore plain red shirts back then, but surely a little white collar/cuff detail? Surely white shorts and boots instead of just white legs? They look shocking and nothing special at all.

Gravatar
By in United States,

an english scoccer team stadium but an player exclusive just for ASIA ???? TLG , still to much eggnog in the system ? Insane !

i would understand this for UK only but ASIA ? they already get the New Years give away extras on top !

thats very disappointing TLG.

They might run surveys on bricklink ( which they now own ) to get more AFOL feedback for such things.

By in United States,

...And they expect people are gonna buy this set, not to mention the $300 price tag, but with a promotion most fans won't even be able to get? I'll pass.

Klinton77 - I suspect the "targeting the Asian market" approach may make sense in the short/medium term, but in the long term it may be detrimental. Like how Hollywood increasingly adapts to Chinese censorship standards - it leaves little room for critical or thought-provoking movies, making everything bland, harmless entertainment.

The figures themselves are a little odd too. Not only do they lack details you'd expect like dual-molded shorts and era-appropriate chest prints (especially when they DO have unique back prints), they also uses the standard yellow rather than the licensed flesh color. This make me think they've just used some random City parts - are any of the faces or hair pieces unique to this set?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I understand the push to the Asian market... heck, a quarter of EPL teams have chinese script on their kits this season.

But I don’t get how a designer saw three bronze players (one holding a ball) and came up with this.

Gravatar

*clatter-clatter-clatter*

That's the sound of LEGO losing their marbles.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Here we go again... I am entitled to buy this set... it's so unfair to not sell it in my country... I really want it and now it's going to be expensive... LEGO how dare you?
The Stones said it in 1969: You can't always get what you want.
That's life. Deal with it.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Bland gwp? Oh no, how will I carry on without this. The humanity.

Also, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say that Lego is putting too much emphasis on the Asian market. The Chinese New Year sets are very recent and they're incredibly well-designed. And now they're available worldwide, so no one is missing out on the excellent prints and huge variety of elements in new colors. Lego is not a zero-sum game, people. Asian culture getting cool sets means that YOU also get cool sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I thought they said no more regional items??

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Are the figures even attached to the pedestal? Their alignment makes them look like they are just free standing on top (across the two 1x8 tiles).
The Adidas Trademark notification in the flyer seems a tad excessive considering the lack of detail in the outfits.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I hope they are packaged with obligatory traffic cones. Like others I think they should be bronze coloured.

Gravatar
By in Estonia,

First two weeks of 2020 and yet another region exclusive item. Chinese new year sets also had the exclusive gifts, much nicer though but still... Does LEGO have an independent marketing division in Asia who does these things.., who is authorized to have special sets manufactured in the chinese factory for their region? Because other global brands often have such regional independence, like Ford etc.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These will be available in North American stores, though very limited quantities. Hopefully Europe receives a lot of them.

Gravatar
By in United States,

No big deal. I already have three blank red torsos and three white legs, and at least one or two of the hairpieces. Heads don't look exclusive at all. Seems like this could easily be built, if one so desired to have this set.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Hmm, possibly the least 'Creator'-like set that could ever have that branding?

Gravatar
By in United States,

My store in Aventura Florida will be getting these figures but we only have a small quantity (I think 20-30)

Not when those guys played

Gravatar
By in France,

People should also consider that this might have been driven by MUtd Commercial people saying to Lego ‘how can we promote this in Asia?’ and not the other way round.
The buzz it is creating here is microcosmic compared to the frenzy that it will create over there....

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

I still have the figures from the year 2000 Football theme, including figures with numbers 10, 7 and 9 on their shirts, so not a big miss.

Back then they had a Zidane/Adidas figure + Adidas ball.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Is it just me, or has a lot of LEGO's announcements for this MU thing felt.. out of character? Like they didn't quite think through how they were going to go about this?

First there was the set announcement that felt like it was trying too hard to reassure buyers that adults could play with the toy, and now there's this confusing announcement for minifigs that probably were better off just being included in the actual set.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Or just piece this out on Bricklink for about $1.35.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The hairpiece on the Bobby Charlton figure should have been made from slightly thinner material

Gravatar
By in United States,

These will be available in the US. It would surprise me if they weren’t found in all brand stores.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

You know why it is not available in the UK? This is an overated team and hardly anyone will buy this set in Asia. The GWP is to drive up sales. With no print, it looks more like cheerleaders. Something you can bricklink for $2 for each fig.

There won't be that many out there, so I think it will stay kinda pricey. The hype around the stadium (in America at least) is almost nonexistent.

Gravatar
By in France,

Maybe Europe or other continents should have bootleg producers and IP robbers so that Lego really tries to be first on market by offering fans such exclusive gifts.

Gravatar
By in Finland,

I don't see any exclusive pieces so I'd you're a big fan of these guys you shouldn't have that much of a hard time

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

They will be available in Europe as well, as conformed at least in Germany. Discovering a GWP in Asia doesn't mean it won't be elsewhere.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

could they have made less of an effort on the minfigures?

You're missing the big picture here. Europe has lost track and is not important in the world any longer. Asia, the US and the Middle East are the markets of the present and the future. Perhaps one day TLG will move its headquarters to Asia as well.
Who needs tradition and heritage after all...?

As for the set itself, I couldn't care less. But they should offer it at least in the UK other than Asia. I mean, since when is ManU an Asian team? And come to think of it, why is ManU so popular in Asia anyway? Did they have lots of Asian players during their heyday (which iirc is quite a while back. Can't even remember when they last won anything of importance)?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

1 - No more regional exclusives - thanks for lying Lego. That's a BAD THING TO DO, customers remember that kind of thing meaning we cannot trust you on anything you ever say going forward now as you are probably lying!

2 - Why is this exclusive to an area of the world where the actual football team doesn't reside?

3 - this should have been in the box set as an extra.

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Please everyone, it is NOT exclusive to Asia!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

I wonder why they're yellow heads and not fleshies

Indeed. It's about time LEGO made a set related to Liverpool FC. A Jürgen Klopp minifig. I'd pay for that.
:-)
