Two years of random set of the day

Huwbot has been picking a random set of day for just over two years now so, following on from the analysis he presented a few months ago to debunk the theory that he always picks Clikits, I thought it would be interesting to see which of his selections are the most liked, and which ones didn't excite you very much, from the 746 he's picked so far...

Most liked

375-2The top ten most liked RSotDs are all truly classic sets, most from the golden age of Castle, Pirates and Space. In fact the first castle, 375 Castle has two entries in the list, thanks to it being issued with a different number in North America (6075 Castle)

The highly-sought-after 10182 Cafe Corner takes the #2 position, and is the only modular building to be picked for RSotD so far.

6075 Castle 27 Apr 2019 92
10182 Cafe Corner 13 Jul 2019 90
6274 Caribbean Clipper 28 Feb 2019 89
375 Castle 06 Jul 2018 89
6066 Camouflaged Outpost 19 Sep 2019 85
6980 Galaxy Commander 26 Apr 2019 80
6034 Black Monarch's Ghost 19 Feb 2019 79
6251 Pirate Minifigures 03 Nov 2019 79
6544 Shuttle Transcon 2 22 Jan 2020 77
10001 Metroliner 06 Mar 2019 77

Least liked

3241-1

The other end of the table is occupied with Clikits, small Technic sets and other seemingly unpopular sets.

I don't think 8208 Custom Cruiser and 8209 Future F1 deserve their place at the bottom: I thought they were cool at the time, showcasing what could be done with just a few of the new (at the time) Technic pieces.

8208 Custom Cruiser 22 Mar 2018 12
3241 Nursery 25 Apr 2018 12
8216 Turbo 1 18 May 2018 12
7302 Worker Robot 23 Apr 2018 13
8209 Future F1 09 Apr 2018 13
310 Pendant 13 Feb 2018 13
5871 Riding Stables 04 May 2018 14
10081 Heart Birthday Pack 25 Nov 2018 14
7514 Sweet Dreamy Jewels 08 Jan 2019 15
8668 Side Rider 55 01 May 2018 15

Most commented

6824-1 The sets that sparked the most conversation are, again, mostly from the classic era but it's interesting to see 8310 Nick Bluetooth in the list, too. Looking back, it doesn't look like all the comments were entirely complementary!

6824 Space Dart I 23 Jan 2018 63
6034 Black Monarch's Ghost 19 Feb 2019 60
6285 Black Seas Barracuda 12 Feb 2018 55
8310 Nick Bluetooth 09 Jan 2019 53
4067 Buggy 30 Jan 2020 52
4463 Light 06 Nov 2019 51
8960 Thunder Driller 03 Jan 2019 50
10182 Cafe Corner 13 Jul 2019 50
7020 Army of Vikings with Heavy Artillery Wagon 08 Mar 2019 43
6066 Camouflaged Outpost 19 Sep 2019 43

Least commented

8208-1Custom Cruiser
8208

It's clear from this list, and the one above, that small Technic sets are not a very popular choice for RSotD, occupying eight of the ten slots in the least-talked-about chart.

8208 Custom Cruiser 22 Mar 2018 2
8270 Rough Terrain Crane 04 Mar 2018 3
8209 Future F1 09 Apr 2018 3
8136 Fire Crusher 18 Jul 2018 3
8649 Nitro Menace 24 Jul 2018 3
8857 Street Chopper 05 Aug 2018 4
1285 Yellow Tiger 22 Aug 2018 4
1774 Aircraft 05 Sep 2018 4
8238 Duelling Dragsters 02 Nov 2018 4
8812 Helicopter 12 Apr 2018 4

Anyway, I hope you find that interesting...

Huwbot will continue selecting sets for your delectation and edification at 2am (London) tomorrow.

Very interesting!

Nobody else should leave a comment to leave @nathan20041 as the 1 and only comment. Just to confuse matters and throw out the statistics. D'oh.

By in Sweden,

Thanks for sharing these statistics! Very interesting indeed.

2 years? Time flies...

By in United States,

Regarding the number of comments on Nick Bluetooth: if you take out all the comments about how I had just joked the day before about what would happen if a Galidor set was chosen as RSOTD, then he falls out of the top 10...

By in United Kingdom,

Weird that the top 5 most liked all begin with the letter C!

By in Puerto Rico,

Thanks for this list and thanks Huwbot for your service.

Why has huwbot not been represented by the winning model from that contest the site had a while back?

By in Greece,

Love stuff like this, brilliant article!

He has, if you click on the 'analysis' link you can clearly see him

By in United States,

By the way, what happened to the riddles from several months ago? I enjoyed those, and I thought that was supposed to be a weekly thing.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^^ I've not got round to building him yet.

^ Chris will no doubt prepare more in the coming weeks.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I remember all those lovely comments last year when the Thunder Driller showed up!

I also remember the laughs of when Nick Bluetooth showed up - someone had jokingly predicted it a day earlier.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Thanks for the stats! Always interesting.

Why does the RSOTD appear at 0200 London time?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Another analysis: I see that both the 'least liked' and 'least commented' both come primarily from 2018 (with only one Clikits set selected in early 2019 in the 'least liked' category).

Could a smaller user base then vs in later years; or even a lack of knowledge of features (eg 'like') in those earlier years influence the statistics? Is there more of a likelihood for people to express their opinions now vs in 2018 via either 'liking' or commenting?

In any case, thanks to Huw for the site and Huwbot for the many tasks he does in the background; including the RSOTD.

@Huwbot - you need to pick more Fabuland.
Please.
Pretty Please.

It's as good a time as any and given that most of our material is posted during the European day huwbot felt it would be nice to post it when the west coast of the USA was up and about.

By in United States,

Clearly, one of two conclusions may be drawn. Either:
- Lego needs to make more classic-style (or even re-releases) or
- We're all old
Or both. I suppose both is ok. Anyway, more Classic Space! And keep crunching that data, I enjoy articles like this.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I always like to see the rsotd and to read the comments.
Would be actually nice to have also a random minifig or piece of the day.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Lego should definitely check out the “Most Liked” list for themselves next time they choose to reissue an old set...

Gravatar
By in United States,

Somewhat unrelated but its interesting to see the Caribbean Clipper and compare it to the new leaked Creator pirate ship.

By in Australia,

I’ve used this site for almost 2 years now!

For the record, when the new RSotD gets posted, it's noon in Australia.

Very interesting! Was really funny to visit the old articles and laugh! Thanks for this awesome thread!

Great stats. Huwbot is saving the better modulars for special occasions.

By in Poland,

8. 5571 Black Cat [also known as 'Giant Truck'] (1996)
7. 6399 Airport Shuttle (1990)

By in France,

This is such a great feature, and so simple.
I love seeing sets that I missed during the dark ages and also how Lego has evolved over time.
Love the reader idea above about a random minifig per day.....

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Honestly the biggest takeaway for me here is that apparently I can like articles. Legit did not know you could do that, thought it was only comments

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

@worriz107 Thank you. That seems a little obvious now. I’m not too acquainted with Brickset vocabulary.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I had NO idea you could like an article...I am so daft.

Gravatar
By in France,

Every morning, after breakfast, 7/7 but for very rare occasions, I take 10 minutes to finish my black coffee and vape a while, and every morning the first thing I do, once I'm down in my basement where my Lego collection and displays are, on my grand-grandmother rocking chair, I open Brickset site and read RSOD article. It starts my day with a relaxing and intimate moment, surrounded by my favourite and beloved Lego sets. And once RSOD drives me back into found memories of childhood, once enables me to discover a set I had never seen before 8 or 9 times out of 10 I think), I read funny or interesting comments about it. It's a very precious moment to me, a bit of calm before the speed of the day to come. So it starts my day with something I always enjoy and I would be missing if it came to stop. So thank you Huwbot, I mean once again thank you to the whole team for all what you do for us Lego fans and AFOLs, in a world where it is still somehow difficult to be understood by the majority when you are a grown and responsible person who is still "playing with children toys".

Hmmm, good observation. And now that you mention it, I do quite enjoy things that start with the letter C.
Cheese
Comfortable Chair
Campfires
Chocolate Chip Cookies
Clikits...

By in United Kingdom,

You know, it's ENTIRELY because of Random Set of the Day that you guys get me coming to Brickset (almost) every day. Before I knew this feature was a thing, I only really visited to browse the database and update my collection; it was only once RSoTD became a thing that I found I had a reason to become a daily visitor. So, many thanks for giving me my daily dose of old Lego nostalgia most days! :D

Thirding the idea of a Random Minifigure of the day, too ^^

Reminds me of that Monty Python sketch about the guy who loved words that sound "woody".
;-)

Gravatar
By in United States,

Don't let Lego know this data, they'll make all the big D2C sets start with C
and that's just not (red letter B emoji)ool

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Aww, I loved the small Technic sets of that era! That was the time when I really got into Technic and I was always tinkering with those...
