Meet a member: Misstapkat

Posted by ,

Today we meet one of our newer members, Katy Sipe, aka Misstapkat, who's a doctor of physical therapy from Washington (state), USA:

Is there a meaning behind your Brickset member name?

It’s a name I came up with in high school for my Xbox game name. My name is Katy, and I used to tap dance competitively so I came up with Misstapkat! And instead of coming up with something different for Twitch when I joined as a viewer, I just figured it was easier to keep it. And now everyone on Twitch calls me Kat for short.

What is your first LEGO memory?

Building a bridge out of LEGO. I was in an accelerated learning program and that was one of my favourite science projects our teacher (Mr. Knowles) had us do in 2nd grade!
.
Did you have a dark age and if so what caused you to emerge from it?

Not really! I didn’t really have any LEGO sets when I was younger until my brother (who’s 10 years younger) got them for Christmas. But I didn’t seriously start getting into them myself until last year.

Which set or theme has been most influential upon you, as a LEGO fan?

The Hogwarts Castle (71043)! It was my first adult LEGO purchase, and my first live building stream series that I did.

What are you building right now?

I’ve been working through some colorful sets from LEGO Movie 2 and Trolls! I’ve done a lot of Star Wars sets recently, so I’m tired of grey!

How do you store your LEGO?

Not very well right now! I’m in a small apartment, so currently in ziploc bags and kept with the set they came from. Eventually once we get more space I plan to sort things better so start doing more MOC work.

Do you build MOCs? If, so what?

I’ve only built one MOC so far (a funfetti cake), but I’ve been designing a few in Stud.io. I have lots of ideas for some though!

What is your favourite part?

Either the reverse slope or the new quarter circle tiles (since they’re in bright colours now!)

What set/theme/part (take your pick) would you like LEGO to produce?

Well I would have said Nintendo a few weeks ago, but now that will be changing which I’m ecstatic about! But within that I’d love to see some Legend of Zelda sets.

Do you have a presence on Instagram, YouTube or elsewhere?

I do! My primary platform is Twitch (a live streaming service). But I am on YouTube, Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook. My name is Misstapkat on all platforms!

Do you have any interests or hobbies other than LEGO?

I’m a huge gamer nerd, but I also love to read!

How long have you been visiting Brickset?

I’m very new to Brickset! It was introduced to me at BricksCascade at the end of February 2020.

Are you a member of a LUG? Which ones?

I’m a member of the South Puget Sound LUG (SPSLUG), and the Women’s Brick Initiative!

Have you been to a LEGO event? Which one(s)? Do you have a favourite?

My one and only event so far was Bricks Cascade, and I had an absolute blast!

Thanks, Kat! Would you like to be featured? Let us know!

Ah....you’re a reasonably new member too! I joined just after Christmas 2019. I would love Hogwarts, but I don’t have the money or space, not to mention the patience with all those stickers!

I disagree, being a strong fan of Star Wars, that grey is boring! You can’t get tired of it, because it’s Star Wars. And some of the worst sets for the sequel trilogy were 75240 and 75272, which were both red.

Thanks, @Misstapkat

75240 is actually from the star wars resistance cartoon and although I dont watch it, I do love the set and it’s minifigs. The price on the other hand...

Your nickname is fun - I read it at first as "misstap kat", which in Dutch means "slip-up cat" :)

What kinda MOCs do you make in stud.io? Also, greetings from another Washingtonian :)

I definitely don’t think the Star Wars sets are boring! :D I had just been building a string of them in a row on Twitch and wanted a little more color in my life! The Porg has been one of my favorite sets to build (my husband’s too!).

And it took me about 7 months to convince myself to get the Hogwarts castle. I had just started my first job out of PT school and it took all my effort not to buy it right away haha I got my start on Twitch streaming the LEGO games, and I started with Harry Potter. And with a little peer pressure I wound up buying the castle. It's pricey but it's honestly my favorite set that I've built. There's so much incredible detail that's packed into the set! Honestly they could be charging a lot more for it with how fantastic the design is (but I'm glad that they don't!)

So far I’ve been working on mosaic/tile designs! I’ve made a few from Danganronpa, and some Animal Crossing designs as well!

Honestly that's a very fitting translation! I have a running counter when I stream on Twitch for "goofs" since I misplace bricks a lot when building haha

It's so nice to meet you too! At Bricks Cascade (an AFOL convention in Portland), I joined the Women's Brick Initiative and it was so great to meet so many other awesome women AFOLs!! :D

That's awesome!! I grew up in Puyallup, but did my undergrad at UW! Now I'm a little further south (did my DPT program in Tacoma), but I have from friends from school who live in Spokane!
