Meet a member: Snazzy_Bricks

Posted by ,

Today, in what will be our last 'meet a member' for a while, we are talking to Kyle, a TFOL in Oregon.

Tomorrow I will announce a new member-contributed series that I hope you'll want to get involved with.

What is your first LEGO memory?

I remember that when I was first introduced to LEGO, I immediately jumped to LEGO City, and specifically, Police. One of the first sets I got was 7741 Police Helicopter, and my first memory of that set? Crashing it into our sofa!

Which set or theme has been most influential upon you, as a LEGO fan?

Either Star Wars or Creator, both have been pretty influential. Creator showed me the possibilities of what can be built with the same pieces, and Star Wars is one of my fandoms, so I will make ships and vehicles from typically the Expanded Universe.

What are you building right now?

Currently, I am building 75243 Slave I - 20th Anniversary Edition and a Red Panda sculpture (from MOCHUB) that were gifted to me for my birthday. I found 75243’s build very intuitive, and I loved seeing all the techniques that are put in to it.

How do you store your LEGO?

Drawers, plastic boxes, sometimes I keep the boxes from Ideas sets and store things in them. My mom is a quilter, and she had some extra boxes designed to store spools of thread, which work great for minifigures and small tablescraps. I also have four large IKEA boxes. (I’ll have to see what the IKEA-LEGO collaboration of BYGGLEK is about)

Do you build MOCs? If, so what?

I do build MOCs, mostly small vignettes or Figbarfs, but I’m trying to make a larger MOC every now and then.

What is your favourite part?

Either the Plate 1x2, Rounded, No. 1, or the Plate 1x1 Round W/ Horizontal 3.2 Shaft. I’ve found those two are incredibly useful pieces.

What is your favourite set(s)?

Too many options! If i had to narrow it down to a top 5, I’d pick:

  • 75155 Rebel U-wing Fighter. This one is a brilliant representation of one of my favourite Star Wars ships, and also from my second favourite Star Wars movie.
  • 75243 Slave I - 20th Anniversary Edition. This one is (also) a brilliant version of a ship I love, from my favourite Star Wars movie.
  • 70816 Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP!. This one is special. The LEGO Movie seemed to make something click, (with the risk of sounding cheesy) about the possibilities that LEGO holds. Benny’s Spaceship brought to the table two things that I love: Space, and LEGO.
  • 75050 B-Wing. This set makes the top 5 because it was designed so well. From the engines to the cockpit to the weapons pod, every part of this set feels right.
  • 75025 Jedi Defender-class Cruiser. I remember this as one of the first Star Wars sets I got. I had no idea what KOTOR was, or who any of the characters were. I wanted that ship. It is a very imposing model, especially because of the dark reddish-color scheme, and the techniques used for adding microscaled details.

What set would you like LEGO to produce?

An Ultimate Collector’s Series-scaled version of the Shire!

Do you have any interests or hobbies other than LEGO?

I play some video games like Minecraft, I am also a fan of NASCAR, the United States’ Stock Car Racing association. Star Wars, MARVEL, I did like the Flash TV show on CW. I also do a lot of reading, and am a fan of Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter.

How long have you been visiting Brickset?

I think my first visit was around November 2017, but I joined as a member on January 19, 2018.

What's your favourite/most used feature of the site?

I’ve always found the part database very useful, but I do like the member reviews because they sometimes give info about sets that I can’t find anywhere else. I am shocked how many different parts have been produced, but it helps a lot when I’m trying to buy/find parts for MOCs.

Do you have a presence on Instagram, YouTube or elsewhere?

I have a presence on Flickr, under the handle Snazzy Bricks, and I started an account on MocHub under the same handle. I mostly make scenes with minifigures, although I am starting to move towards small vignettes and models. I also recently made my own website

Thanks, Kyle!

Typical! I was about to make a Meet a Member interview today! never mind, should've done it earlier. Nice to see another TFOL participating :D

By in United Kingdom,

I'd not heard of it either. It looks to be a 'commercial' version of Rebrickable. I'd rather support and use the latter given it's run by a respected AFOL.

By in United States,

Rogue one is also my second favorite star wars movie, but revenge of the sith is my favorite. A UCS Shire would be amazing!

Did I walk into an alternate universe where I live in Oregon!?!? One of my first LEGO memories was that helicopter. I remember turning the propeller into a spaceship sort of thing.

By in United States,

@Magmafrost I have only ever made one purchase from MOCHUB. I have long admired the work by JK Brickworks. When I finally decided I was going to bite the bullet to buy my one of my favorite creations, Sisyphus Automata (Motorized), the only way to purchase it was through MOCHUB. I assumed that MOCHUB was a centralized purchasing and distribution site for creators of MOCs, who want to sell their creations, but don't want to deal with the hassle of payment systems, shipping, and buyers in general.

It did take them three months to fulfill the purchase, but I do not know if that was a function of lack of availability from JK Brickworks or if it was MOCHUB's issue. I assume the former, but cannot say for sure. Either way, I am never in a great hurry to get my purchases so the delay did not bother me like it might some others, but it did require me to send a few follow-up e-mails to ask about the status of the order. Initially, I was told it would take one to two weeks to ship. Once I received my coveted set and built it, I decided it was definitely worth the wait.

By in United States,

I’m going to miss these articles, but I’m curious to see what replaces them. Hopefully the gap to them returning won’t be TOO long!
