Today's guest author is Anders, aka Roebuck, who takes a look at notable sets containing animals:

For as long as I can remember I have been a Lego animal collector. Today there is a lot more to collect than back in the 80s and early 90s when I was a kid. Then, it was mostly horses in castle sets and sharks, monkeys and parrots in pirate sets. Even if the few animals we had then were more common, they were rarely numerous in sets.

Nowadays there is a lot more diversity when it comes to different types of Lego bricks and that is true for the animals as well. Even if more animals have found their place in the Lego Ark over the years they are still few and far between for some reason and as a general rule never very abundant in any one set.

So, I thought it would be fun idea to have a look at a few times we have received more animals for our buck than we have come to expect from Lego over the years.

Let's start at the beginning with the first minifig-scale Lego animal, the horse...

The horse has been in a lot of sets since 1984 and while it is not unheard of that the biggest castles had 4 included, only once have a set had 5. It was a rather small set, namely the 6055 Prisoner Convoy from 1985. There is a knight on a white horse in addition to 2 white and 2 black pulling the wagon. After that set most Lego horses had to pull more than they should, no matter how big the carriage was, as 1 or 2 horses was deemed fit for the task in Lego eyes.

6055-1Prisoner Convoy
6055

Fast-forward to 1996 and another set worth mentioning regarding the horse mould is the small 6404 Carriage Ride in the Paradisa theme. The Paradisa theme had some nice sets and where not afraid of including animals in them. The horses apparently liked it there as well since it is the only place where they have given birth to foals so far. One brown one was included in 6404 with its mother a black mare and a classic parrot, not bad for around 50 pieces.

6404-1Carriage Ride
6404

The year after a Divers subtheme showed up with a lot of mostly underwater creatures. The whole wave was good animal wise, but I will limit myself to mention 2 sets now. 6441 Deep Sea Refuge had 2 black manta rays, 1 black octopus, 1 white shark, 1 light grey sawfish and 1 light grey dolphin, that is a lot and not many sets can boost they have 6 animals inside the box.

6441-1Deep Sea Refuge
6441

The second set from the wave I like to mention is the 6599 Shark Attack that is basically a shark army-builder. It is a small set with less than 50 pieces and 2 minifigs in addition to 1 dark grey shark, 1 white shark and 1 light grey sawfish. I wish Lego would start making army-builder sets for animals like that today. Unfortunately, the two sharks are not shown on the instruction cover picture.

6599-1Shark Attack
6599

The Belville theme was definitely not minifig-scale, but some animals in the sets were, and in 1998 a small set worth mentioning surfaced. 5845 Dolphin Show had as the name suggested dolphins included; 1 light grey and 1 white. It also included 1 red crab, 1 orange starfish and a white clam: not bad for a set with a Barbie doll...

5845-1Dolphin Show
5845

In my opinion the Adventure line could definitely have had more animals included in them all over, but in 2003 they went big! Even if 7414 Elephant Caravan only has one animal it is basically a huge animal with 3 minifigs and a few parts on the side. I think it look fantastic, is poseable and the creators really made the most of the parts that where available to them at the time.

If Lego were to make a new updated elephant mould it probably would look similar to the mammoth from a couple of years back, frozen in the ice without the ability to move the legs. Do not get me wrong I still want an updated elephant mould, but unsure if it will end up better than the original.

7414-1Elephant Caravan
7414

The Agents wave in 2008 did not shy away from the use of animal operatives and 8633 Speedboat Rescue had 2 of the big shark mould in light bluish grey introduced in that set. It has only come in one pirate set later before it resurfaced this year in an updated colour/print version (not counting zombies and robots editions of course).

8633-1Speedboat Rescue
8633

The city Farm subtheme was a good one in 2009, but they did not go crazy with the animals until 2010 when they made 7684 Pig Farm & Tractor. The pig was new for the set and if we had 1 or 2 in it that would have been normal, 3 would have been generous by Lego standards, but 4 was impressive! Well done to the designers who decided that, we need more of that mindset in Denmark ;)

7684-1Pig Farm & Tractor
7684

Also worth mentioning from the same wave is the small impulse-set 7566 Farmer that had a pig and a brown dog, one of the best impulse-sets ever made in my mind.

7566-1Farmer
7566

For those of you that read my “Featured set of the day” article about 7189 Mill Village Raid you know that we finally have arrived with my favourite set of all time. It is an amazing set and a lot of the reason for that is all the fantastic animals included. The animals there count all the way up to lucky number 7, and they are not any old frog either. 2 goats exclusive to the set, 1 unique horse in light bluish grey, 1 rare pig with spots and 3 hen/chickens (2 white and 1 dark tan).

7189-1Mill Village Raid
7189

Speaking of frogs, it comes in vast numbers in 3854 Frog Rush released the same year. Yellow, red, green and reddish brown get 5 each with a total of 20 frogs. Lego is usually more generous with the small animals without printing, and they are usually not as interesting to get as the bigger ones, but here they fill up the whole pond so thought it was worth mentioning.

3854-1Frog Rush
3854

City introduced the husky in the Arctic wave in 2014 and was nice enough to put 4 in every set they came in. 60036 Arctic Base Camp had a polar bear and 2 fish as well.

60036-1Arctic Base Camp
60036

Ideas seem to have a low budget in general so new animal moulds are probably out of reach in that theme, but 21310 Old Fishing Store that came out in 2017 managed to bring back the seagull, it even had 3 of them. There was also 1 black spider, 2 orange crabs, 1 orange cat, 8 fish, 1 light bluish grey chicken (without eye print) and 2 red lobsters. Not bad on a small design budget and well done to the responsible designers.

21310-1Old Fishing Store
21310

Collectible Minifigures has become a great source of new animals and series 19 is the best one in that regard so far. The Dog Sitter in that series had for the first and so far only time 2 animals in one bag. 1 white French bulldog and my favourite animal mould (since I have 2 of them sleeping on the floor next to me as I write this) the one and only dachshund...

71025-9Dog Sitter

If you think I have forgotten an animal anomaly set please make a comment below. Time will tell what the future holds and which animals that gets the honour of receiving the Lego treatment in Billund next...

By in Australia,

Love this article. Just the other day I started a spreadsheet of animals in my LEGO ark. And I was having great deliberations on wether or not fictional animals such as wargs are allowed in my zoo. And even further, can I add animal minifigs to my zoo, as you would run into Mickey at Disneyland?

By in United Kingdom,

Great article. I like the idea of building a farm or zoo but lack of moulds always puts me off.

By in Denmark,

You forgot all the owls in the LEGO Harry Potter Series, but what a great investigation. BR Mathias

Gravatar
By in France,

Early Harry Potter sets had a few different animals in them, between spiders, rats/mice, owls and bats. Don't know if that counts or not ^^

The Skunk from sets like 60176 is missing :( Such a cute little critter

By in Ireland,

I’m surprised there was no mention of the baby animals in Friends (hamster, baby bunny, baby turtle, baby dolphin, baby seahorse specifically). They tend to work with normal minifigure scale stuff as their eyes are less cartoony. There was also the bag of Friends coral colored sea creatures released last year! Those didn’t look cartoony at all. :P

By in United Kingdom,

I have the pig farm! And the Leap Frog game. They are both excellent sets

Gravatar
By in Australia,

I’ve always thought the cow part (64452pb01/pb02) was underused. From what I know, in just 4 sets, and none since 2014. More cows please LEGO.

By in Australia,

And didn't the Prince of Persia line give us camels and ostriches? I know I have an ostrich, floating around in my parts box.

Gravatar
By in France,

What about the SW animals?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Amazing article, but I didn’t notice anything like the Rancor and others from Star Wars, baby animals from Friends, desert animals from Prince of Persia or owls and the like from Harry Potter. They might be a good idea for a sequel.

Besides this, I loved the article.

By in Poland,

I remember how fast those impulse pig sets dissapeared from shelves!
I got myself 2!
@TheWackyWookiee
Friends animals use different design rules. IMO they look out of place next to more squareish basic designs of minifigs and other "system" pets

By in France,

Hello,

We are missing the ostriches and camels from Prince of Persia. I would love more Arabian theme sets!

No dinosaurs ? They are extinct but probably count as animals. At least my kids would say so!

Thank you for sharing. :)

By in Canada,

Great article! Lego animals are so appealing, especially the farm ones. Lego seems to have realized how much we all want those animals judging from the variety of them in this year's sets. Does anyone have any idea as to why Lego is holding out on a new goat?

Also, Huw, do you think Brickset readers would be interested in an article on ABS food?

Gravatar
By in France,

I also like the 3 moulds for snakes, especially the last one from the CMF, the cobra, which is great !

Gravatar
By in Brazil,

Could have mentioned the bison, from some never released Western sets from the 90s.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

will LEGO ever make a labrador?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Liked the article, I would add 10193 Medieval Market village as included cows, turkeys, fish and rats. Similarly, farm 7637 included cows, cats, mice etc. but weirdly no pigs, goats, sheep or other farm animals. Strange Lego City have never done a full blown zoo set, even though these have reappeared several times in Duplo, and the tiger, panther and leopard have appeared separately in the Lego jungle theme 60159, 60161 and 60162 with the usual crocodile or spider. As a follow on you could do an article on unusual locations for animals, e.g. MetalBeards Sea Cow 70810, although really a bull.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

If you’re going to bring up Belville for the dolphins, no mention of the giant horses they had?

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Loved this article! I'm a sucker for LEGO animals, thank you for sharing. I didn't know about the black manta rays in the 90s set, look pretty cool! I'd love to get the light bluish gray horse and of course...the goats! Please LEGO GiveUsTheGoat.

What about the old style monkeys? I wonder if there were any sets with multiple of those in the past.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

You forgot the SW creatures and dinosaurs.
Edit: don't forget, Dragons!!!!!

By in Belgium,

Scala / Belville animals are weird, I once was about to toss this one out from a bulk lot as 'not Lego': https://www.bricklink.com/catalogPG.asp?P=bear&colorID=8 and even then I almost did, I guess they could warrant an entire article for those who could stomach it ;)

The Friends set are great when it comes to number of animals included, however to me they do not work with minifigs not even the baby's. I have a couple of exceptions; the small bird and coral reef sea creatures. I have seen great mocs that use both minidoll and even duplo animals together with minifig ones so every Lego fan must decide for themself what they like to use. There is no wrong answer :)

I’m thinking of the Dinosaur animals, large cat molds like the tiger and panthers, plus the bears.

It is a small set with 4 animals, my bad ;)

I only mentioned minifig-scale animals, Belville had a few that were way of that scale :)

Only mentioned sets with a lot animals that we have got. Unfortunately we never got the bison with the western sets, if we did a set would probably be on the list ;) I have also seen a zebra in Lego HQ, I wonder what set that was suppose to be in..

I should probably have added 10193 Medieval Market village since it has more animals than just the cows, my bad :) 7637 was great, but I agree it had too few animals for a farm.

By in Switzerland,

The set I have the most is the 7566 Farmer. I bought 7 of this small set to extend my 7684 Pig Farm & Tractor.
Means the 4569840 Pig, then the 4261047 Dog/Wolf, are the animals I owned the most.

I own I believe 12 of the 6076467 Husky dog, they're so cute!

Do teddy bears count as animals too? I have a few of those as well.

My daughter just explained to me why 10 years ago she moved from Lego to Playmobil.
She is looking now to apply for a job as an animal sitter, and wanted to have a Lego zoo at the time as she had with the Duplo and she found it through Playmobil.

I suspect that the generous number of pigs in set 7684 (Pig Farm & Tractor) might also be a reflection of the popularity of pig farms in Denmark.

But can I give a shout out to another special hound - Santa’s Little Helper, the rescue greyhound that came with Maggie in Simpson’s CMF S2. My favourite Lego animal, and dog in particular.

Nice one. I enjoyed that.

Got the elephant years ago. It's great.....but only came with one Trunk/Tail - same piece, and none too common.

You didn't mention crocodile, came in many sets. I love chameleon from cmf19.

I wonder why Lego never gave us Zoo sets, maybe modular - different set differents kind of animals (birds, water animals, cats,...). I know that Duplo have Zoo, why not City?!

I had a similar issue with set 7418 Scorpion Palace and only got one elephant leg piece in a sealed set (just purchased a couple years ago). Not an easy part to get a replacement for now. TLG apparently had some quality control issues with including those elephant parts back then.

By in Netherlands,

Great article, and more animals are always good to have - time for a new City Farm range, and maybe a Creator Expert (18+?) Zoo?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Ah, animals. Several years back, I actually thought I had every animal they'd ever released. Then I discovered Bricklink, realized I was missing stuff like the black hawk, and basically just gave up. Thinking back, that was probably for the best.

So, Frog Rush probably holds the record for sheer quantity with 20. That doesn't surprise me at all, but the Fishing Store coming right on its tail with 18 kinda does.

@utlf:
I have no idea which episode it's from (thought it was the premiere movie, but either they edited it out, or it was from a regular episode), but I distinctly remember a scene from Babylon 5 where they show the "alien quarters". They were stark white rooms, smaller than a jail cell, with no furniture or bathrooms, and a giant window filling one entire wall so everyone could look in at random times of the day. It must have been early in the series, because I think they only showed it that way once before phasing it out in favor of quarters more like what everyone else got.

By in United States,

Really nice write-up, several of these sets have been on my wanted list for quite some time!

As others have mentioned, the cow and (especially) the goat molds are really under-utilized! The return of the cow horns in Pirates of Barracuda Bay gives me unrealistic hope for more Holsteins... I guess I'll just have to keep waiting 'til the cows come home.

Personally, I prefer the older, slightly more angular styling of minifig-scale animals. For whatever reason, I find the new alligator particularly jarring, which I didn't have with most of the newer animals, including the cow, all of the dogs, or the new horse mold. I really like the elephant from Adventurers, for me it strikes the right balance between details and blockiness that gives Lego it's unique charm. I'll buy from Schleich if I need realism.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I can only think of one other carriage that had more than two horses, and they were dead ones. 7092: Skeletons' Prison Carriage had three skeleton horses pulling the carriage, and one live one with the knight coming to the rescue.

Love this article! Still sad I missed your favorite set... I planned to buy it but somehow it sold out before I got the money saved for it :( Those goats are great.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Huw, you missed one! The foal also comes in 6418 Paradisa Country Club. But that's it. Two sets, only in old-brown. Almost certainly the mold has been destroyed by now.

@domboy:
Wow. Even two-horse carriages aren't that common. I didn't get a precise count, but I don't think they're into double-digits yet. You can cheat the numbers, however, on "carriages with 3+ horses" if you count sets that include 3+ horses, as well as a carriage that's drawn by one or two of those horses. Fort Legoredo is one such set, with three horses total, one of which is towing a cannon.

By in Romania,

Thank you so much for this article!
It is very hard to include all animals in an article. From the ones very rare that I managed to acquire, and not mentioned in the article, is the camel.

I think it is a shame for a toy company and a lack of respect on generations of kids, not to produce often and in more numbers/set the animals that you already have molds for.
I understand every 3 years Police and Fire Brigade sets because kids play from 4-10 years old with them. I am annoyed by them but I understand every kid must have the chance to play with this kind of sets.
But it seems LEGO is not paying attention to this waves of kids every 3 years in terms of animals.

I think it is really sad for a lot of kids to not be able to play during their childhood with animals from their favorite toy.

If we speak about number of animals/set, it is also sad. No parents would buy 2 or 3 times a set for their kids to have a decent farm, and we must imagine a kid playing with only 1 or so animals during their lifetime.
I understand rare minifigures treated as collector items, but I don't understand a toy company treating animals like once in a lifetime collector precious plastic piece.

A 160 euros Elephant and 37 euros Goat at BrickLink it's a real a shame.

By in Australia,

I’m not sure if it was mentioned I the comments but I believe the old 1999/2000 Town - Arctic sets contained the first Polar bears as well as trans-coloured spiders which I don’t think have appeared in too many other sets since. Then as mentioned in the article we got the updated polar bears in the 2014 City - Arctic reboot.

Thank you @Roebuck . I thoroughly enjoyed your article!

I have quite a few of the animals mentioned above in my display collection including some rare ones such as the elephant, white dolphin, grey dappled horse, and goat.

By in United States,

I got really upset when LEGO used the Friends dolphin mold instead of the old divers one, which was the one actually in the Lego Batman Movie, with the swimming Batman collectible minifigure. The same piece also appeared in fun at the beach minfig pack. Friends animals and minidolls don't work with the classic minifig system style.
Also I only realized in hindsight but we have had no minifigure-compatible horses for FOUR YEARS. After the 2013 Castle and Lone Ranger themes yielded a few, we have only gotten white horses.
2014: One in a juniors set
2015: The Scooby Doo Headless Horseman's horse
We only got horses back last year in the Harry Potter carriage set (with detachable wings too) and thankfully they are available on B&P. I feel like the 2012 mold change was a mistake because incorporating two joints they are more expensive to produce and thus rarer, but even worse are incompatible with the old plethora of headgear and barding. :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

@Sibera_lee:
One of those old Arctic sets also contained a TNG scorpion, which at one point was nearly impossible to buy on Bricklink.

@Norikins:
I sorta think I noticed that, but even odder is that the scene in question never even appears in the movie. That minifig only appears as a 2D drawing late in the end credits (along with the beach attire versions of Robin, Batgirl, Alfred, and Joker, and all of them have plain white surfboards rather than the accessories those minifigs came with). Glam Batman never appears in the movie at all, and I believe only appeared in a single trailer that was aired at SDCC but never run on TV or in theaters.

Quickly scrolling through the database, it looks like the first sets to have the alligator were all but the smallest of the Islanders sets from the pirates theme in 1994. Interestingly, the classic dragon--which has an identical tail and upper jaw to the alligator--was available at least as early as 1993. I imagine that the two pieces were developed simultaneously.

The old alligator still stands as one of my favorite animals (though I may be biased, as 7410 Jungle River was my first system set that wasn't a hand-me-down from my older brothers). I'm surprised it hasn't been featured in more castle moats!

Nice article. I believe the horse from the 7189 is also unique to the set, same with the black spotted pig (wheres the one in the CMF series was brown spotted) I think another great source for some of these animals (like the skunk, Lobster, clams, cats, Rats, bats, seagull, small dogs, bulldog, and soon to include the Dachshund) in the BaM bins at LEGO stores, another reason why I really hope those (dachshund and chicken) are released this year still and can be purchased in one way or another via the bins this year.

I like the article, it's informative and fun. Really dig the little french bulldog. I'm sure the dachshund will fit right in with your two little doggies. I have a black bear from my Mining Expert Site 60188 set that i enjoy a lot. Thanks.

I hear people talking about a bison. I’ve never seen a lego bison. In what set? I wanna know, i wanna know!

"You forgot to mention Indiana jones set 7626 Jungle Cutter with 5 red ants and 1 black spider! Love those giant ants!

And great choice for an article!"

Thanks for the tip, I did not mention much of the small animals since they usually are easier to come by, however the ant only comes in 3 sets so that is not common :)

"Brickset, can you sort out the amount of ads on the site. This looks like a great article but I’m fighting the pop ups every step of the way."

If you log in they will disappear I think :)

"In terms of animal bang for buck, I also think the Indiana Jones 7621 Lost Tomb set may get a mention. For Indy who "hates snakes", you sure get a lot of snakes in that set!"

Thanks for the tip, 10 snakes in that set is a lot :)

"Nice article. I believe the horse from the 7189 is also unique to the set, same with the black spotted pig (wheres the one in the CMF series was brown spotted) I think another great source for some of these animals (like the skunk, Lobster, clams, cats, Rats, bats, seagull, small dogs, bulldog, and soon to include the Dachshund) in the BaM bins at LEGO stores, another reason why I really hope those (dachshund and chicken) are released this year still and can be purchased in one way or another via the bins this year."

Almost right the pig also came in a Lego movie set ;)
The BAM is a great source for animals, so I hope they can open them up again soon. I am really looking forward to the black dachshund since that is the same colour as my new puppy :)

Unfortunately that was a mould made for the Western sets (I assume the native Americans ones) that never made it into a actual set. I saw it last year on the Lego inside tour so it definitely exsists ;)

Surely you have noticed that when you're logged in (which you need to be to post a comment) they disappear?

:-( too bad! If they decide to go on with Hidden Side, i would like to see a stampede of bisons and ghost-bisons or something like that :-)

Edit: went searching for them online. And now i’m even sadder that they never were used in real sets

Most of them are stored in zip-lock bags and I do not have a "photo-studio" set up so it would probably be a lot of work to document them all. Maybe more interesting to a broader audience if I use that time on writhing another animal article ;)

The bitter irony is that, on a real computer, you can just _stay_ logged in, but you have a giant screen that's more than capable of giving up some space to ads without impinging on your view of the content. It's when you're on a small device, like a smart phone or an iPod Touch, and you have to log in anew every time you visit the site, that the ads become insanely annoying. They can fill as much as 1/3 of the screen at times, and it shouldn't be necessary to jump through the hoops required to log in just to be able to quickly check the site for new content.

I have a few Crocs from various places, and then there's the various leopards and panthers from the Jungle Explorer sets a couple of years back.

Great article. Very interesting to hear about the rarer animals. Is there a way to show all sets that include an animal or a list of available animals? ( Is there a way to query this?)

My iPhone stays logged in every time. So does my laptop and iPad Pro. Don’t know what’s different for me.

How about the dinosaurs in the Jurassic World sets? Indominus Rex vs Ankylosaurus comes with two LARGE animals.
