Build your own Huwbot

Having built the competition winning Huwbot designed by Eero Okkonen myself a couple of days ago, I wanted you to be able to, too.

I asked if anyone could help make instructions for him, and I was inundated with offers. Thank you to everyone that did so.

In the end, I took up the offer from a good friend (who wants to remain anonymous), and less than 24 hours later they were finished!

Read on for the instructions and parts list, and to find out which set Huwbot grabs for random set of the day...

To upload the parts list to BrickLink:

  • Open the XML file in Notepad or similar, then copy the contents to the clipboard.
  • Go to BrickLink.com and sign in
  • Hover over Want | Wanted list at the top of the page, which takes you to https://www.bricklink.com/v2/wanted/upload.page
  • Click on the 'Upload BrickLink XML format' link near the top
  • Optional: Select 'Create new wanted list' from the Add to drop-down
  • Paste the clipboard into the box
  • Click the 'Proceed to verify items' button, then wait for it to be processed
  • Scroll down and click 'Add to wanted list', then 'View {wanted list name}'

To buy the parts:

Here's an example of the high quality they've been produced to:

Notes, for if you're gathering the parts from your spares. You can ignore if you're using the XML file.

  • There are two types of the 2x2 round cone that are used here on the arms: you need the newer one with the cross-axle connector in the centre hole underneath.
  • The wheels need to be the ones with axle holes rather than the more common variety that have pin holes.
  • The part number for the long axles is incorrect in the instructions. It should be 3707, the 8l version, not 7l

Also...

  • The Clikits heart is not available in the CAD program, so we've used one of the new 1x1 heart tiles on his chest instead. If you want the Clikits one, as indeed you should, there are plenty on BrickLink.
  • I usually rotate his body 180 degrees to that shown in the instructions but you can position it as you wish!

Have fun building him and when you've done so post photos on social media tagged #huwbot so we can all see.

Naughty Huwbot, you can't choose a Ninjago set for random set of the day until 2021!

Huwbot's favourite minifigure.

He features the six colours of the Brickset menu bar on his sides.

And the site's logo in his head.

I think he's had enough of this photo-shoot, it looks like he's scurrying off to find the Clikits...

Many thanks to my anonymous friend for creating the instructions so that everyone has the opportunity can build him.

Aww cute wee huwbot ?? Xx I’ll get ordering my parts right away ?? xx Thanks to anonymous, great job ????????????

Gravatar
By in Netherlands,

Once I have enough room to build my own models again I'll definitely get some extra pieces so I can make this one.

By in Canada,

Fantastic, I am going to try putting Huwbot together with parts on hand until I make an order, so it will be a colourful little fella for now and perhaps a little scrappy looking. Thank you!

Create a new wanted list, open the XML file, copy the text to the import/upload tab in the wanted list page and select the WL you want.

Thank you! that was my first time trying that and it went very smoothly per your directions. Also, thank you to your friend for taking the time to make the parts list and provide the instructions, which are very well done.

I absolutely LOVE everything about this news article, every single bit of it :).

By in Puerto Rico,

Bravo, well done my friends.

By in France,

Awesome! I will also become a fan of Clikits!

Just a remark, in the part list: It contains three Black Technic, Axle 7, which have been produced in only one set: 8653 Enzo Ferrari in 2005. Does Huwbot love so Ferrari ? Then, this part looks a bit overpriced on BrickLink. But it can easily be replaced by a Light Bluish Gray one.

Thank you. This will be my Sunday.

By in United Kingdom,

Beware the 'Easy buy' option, it may be easy but it's rarely the cheapest way of doing it.

By in United States,

You should put Huwbot on Rebrickable.

Huw bot is very cute, but can't help but think of the daleks from Dr. Who...

But instead he would say "Build! BUILD!!" XD

Thank you for spotting that. I hadn't. They should 8l length. I've corrected the XML file.

I guess a LOT of people have been buying them since this morning, there’s only one pink one left in the UK !

Gravatar
By in France,

Great. Any chance of putting on Rebrickable so we can see what parts we have/need?
Cheers

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

^ Yes, I'll hopefully do that ASAP.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am so buying all of the parts and a display case.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Hopefully Huw will eventually have an article where people can submit photos of Huwbot ‘at the beach’ or ‘climbing a mountain’ from various parts of the world.

Gravatar
By in United States,

In the first picture he's scratching his head because he can't figure out which set is Clikits.

@Minifig_Jez:
Nope. Neither shade of pink has any sales data for June. There just aren't that many sellers who have them listed. Clikits is one of those themes that, like Technic and Bionicle, doesn't sell well in a store that mostly deals in System bricks. To really draw in customers, you basically need to specialize in that theme and have a robust inventory. Clikits never sold well, so that makes it a bit difficult. Those few people I know of who actually collect it will usually wait until they have a reason to buy other parts from a store and then just wipe out their entire Clikits inventory in one go. That still seems to be what's going on, as you can see that both shades of pink had one sale each in May. Trans-Dark Pink sold a lot of 63, while Trans-Pink's one sale was 130.

By in Finland,

Eero here, great to see the instructions online. There are some minor changes in Huwbot's innards to make building him easier (or possible) with linear instructions. Designing him, like any MOC process, is going back and forth and back and forth, not just clicking in a brick after brick. And thus the final design rarely ends up being the most logical or economical. And, naturally, I had no idea that my design would win, and be eventually made into public instructions.

I'm very happy it did, of course, and I'd like to see your Huwbots. Thanks to Huw, and the anonymous mystery person, for making the instructions and tidying up the confusing bits.

Couple of tips: It might be easier to connect the hub caps (boat studs) to the TECHNIC bushing first and then connecting them to the 8l axles. Also, by rotating the torso 180 degrees from the instructions, as Huw did, makes the colour blocks on the flanks line up as on the category bar on the top of this site. Probably should be that way originally.

Except for the Clickits heart the pieces are relatively common. I would think that one could get them for less than 20 euro on Bricklink (without postages).

Gravatar
By in Norway,

@pig thanks for the assembly tip for the hubcaps! Definitely feels more secure now.
I built the little fella right away (though with flat silver eye sockets and dark metal corner tubes - as that was what I had available) and I absolutely adore him! Love the articulation possibilities! Well done! :-)

By in Germany,

Great instructions. Thank you.
Only improvement would be if the parts list could somehow be checked versus one's Brickset part inventory. How could this be achieved?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does Brickset have a tag for MOCs like this? I don’t remember seeing any other MOC articles like this with instructions and part lists before...

I guess this is due to the subject matter.

You'll be able to do it at Rebrickable once the MOC has been approved there.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Can this please be submitted to Lego Ideas? I know they'll NEVER approve or produce it, but I'd love to have a good laugh at all the people saying, "WTF is a Huwbot?" when it hits 10,000.

OMG yes. This must happen. Someone please do this. I'll vote!

"Now at Rebrickable:

Thank you. Unfortunately I can't use Rebrickable any longer. Ever since they updated their website I get this error message when trying to log in (with the correct login parameters of course:

"403 Permission Denied

A security check has failed. This typically happens if you have logged out/in and then tried to use an old browser tab. Try closing this tab and trying again. "

I tried every trick imaginable, no luck. I can still log in at the PC of a friend of mine, but due to the current situation it is not easy to get there. Plus, I'd rather use Rebrickable here. But alas...

@Huw: yes, I tried several Browsers, including Opera, but the message remains.
Appears to be something that is linked to my particular PC rather than the browser.
Very strange.

Thanks for sharing that, it's interesting to hear how it was changed from your original version.

By in Netherlands,

I'm building mine. Apart from (again!!!) a missing part from a bricklink seller, there is a fault in the XML file. After uploading in bricklink it says you need 9 of the light-b-grey technic bush. However, 12 of them are used in the instructions for the axles. Fortunately they are a common spare part from technix sets so i had lots of them around, but the xml file should be edited.
