New parts in new sets
Posted by Huw,The inventories of the Marvel sets, 10277 Crocodile Locomotive, and 43179 Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse, have just been published and have exposed a number of new parts.
In the list of the new elements in Mickey and Minnie there are a lot of recolours and prints, but also some new general-purpose designs that look particularly interesting...
6308883 (Brick 1X2X1 2/3, W/ 8 Knobs, design: 67329, colour: Black)
This looks to be a particularly useful SNOT brick that wlll revolutionise the construction of cubes. Put two back to back and you immediately have a 2x2x2 cube with studs on 5 faces.
6305216 (Design Element,Deg.135,W/ Crosshole,No.1, design: 65473, colour: Black)
This 2x2 round pipe element is used in Mickey and Minnie's legs and provides a 135 degree connection, and when used in conjunction with 2x2 round bricks will enable the construction of elaborate pipework.
6316450 (Brick W/ Bow 2X2X1 1/3, design: 67810, colour: Brown)
You could say that this element is long overdue! It's a matching corner for 32807 Brick 1X1X1 1/3, W/ Arch that was introduced in the early 1990s.
6295088 (Glass For Frame 1X2X2, design: 35315, colour: Transparent Brown Opal)
This is not a new element but is a new colour. It's called Transparent Brown Opal but it looks more like blue in the official images and those in our review.
Now is a good time to mention a fun new feature I've added to set inventories: Knolled view.
It's often hard to get a feel for how many elements are in a set when all you see is a picture of each one and a number beside it. So, I have added a new view to them which will show an image for every part in the set, as if you'd laid them out neatly on the table.
Of course, it's not exactly the same because the parts images are all the same size and parts are not, but it gives a new appreciation of a set's contents.
So, take a look at this page as an example, click on 'Knolled' near the top, then sort by colour name for best effect!

Great additions, particularly 6308883 and 6316450!
The knolled view is amazing Huw! Thank you so much!
This "knolled" view is so cool.
@Huw: Thanks for constantly making Brickset even better than it already is.
If you put two 6308883s back-to-back, but flip one 180 degrees, do the top/bottom line up if the side studs are linked with a 2x2 plate? Then you get a cube with studs on all 6 faces!

Not quite! I've just tried with the version without studs on the sides. There is a fraction of a mm difference but it is probably not noticeable in most uses.
Thanks for taking the time to add the knolled feature. It looks great!
Knolled view is brilliant! Thanks Huw!
Thumbs up for the knolled view! Great work.
The most interesting piece is the new redesigned classic space helmet in black color, which are used for the noses.

Great additions and I will actively seek those first two parts.
6316450 is going to be soooooo useful!!!
Knolled view is a good visualization tool. I love how this site continues to innovate.
Knolled view is awesome! Thanks, Huw!
Knolled view is fantastic! Saves me the trouble of actually knolling
These are all great additions, especially the corner arch brick.
Love knolled view :-)
Knolled view is interesting, but how can you switch back to the old "images" view?
^ That's not available in inventories (for some reason!) but it's still there on other parts listings.
Knolled view, a function I never knew I needed until it presented itself! Brickset continues to amaze me!
Btw, went straight to the Ninjago City: https://brickset.com/parts/in-70620-1 :)
The Mickey & Minnie arms come in teal and pink in a new Trolls: World Tour set !
I really love that knolled effect feature!!!!!!!
Knolled view...
@Huw, have you been watching Adam Savage videos during lockdown by any chance?
That new Bow Corner brick certainly will help a lot.
It's a much better scale for something like Creator 3-in-1 or City buildings compared to the much larger 3x3x2 Arch Brick.
Also could be used for something like a classic car with curved shapes in a smaller space.
Love that knoll view
Knolled is so cool! Also, love the new way quoted comments are displayed.
I love the Knolled view! I’m sure I’m going to print out Knolled views for some sets in the future!
Are the 10x5x1 half dishes that have Mickey's and Minnie's eyes not new?
630883 looks great. I could see some use for that. The others look good as well.
I really appreciate Brickset doing these periodic new parts update. Thank you! Is there a way to search for this topic easily if looking to reference it at a later date? I’ve had mixed success in the past.
Wow that snot brick is one of the neatest things I’ve seen in a while.
The Knolled feature is really good! Great implementation Huw

I don't always write an article about them but you can see the new parts added on a given day from links at the bottom of this page:

They are, but of limited usefulness in their currently printed form.
@Huw Two things about the knolling view.
It really needs a better grouping of parts. If you can sort them by Bricklink name that would help enormously, because Bricklink names start with the main group, so all tiles go together, all plates etc. Sorting by category doesn't work because nearly everything is 'System'.
Small bug: if there isn't an image for a part, then a spot in the grid is taken but remains empty, but the row count doesn't increase so you get too many images on that row.
Have a look at the Shrimp Shack for example: https://brickset.com/parts/in-70422-1
P.S. It's nice that the knolling page shows the number of unique parts in a set, I don't think that was available before.
@Huw:
There _shouldn't_ be a difference, since the Brickheadz brick is precisely five plates tall and two bricks wide. Those dimensions are one of the first SNOT tricks people usually learn. Then again, conventional wisdom also suggests that a stack of 300 plates should be the same height as a stack of 100 bricks, but practical experience will quickly dispel that assumption.
