Support Huwbot on LEGO Ideas!

Huwbot is now on LEGO Ideas!

We published instructions for the cute and lovable droid who lives in the Brickset server a few weeks ago and in the comments to that article many of you suggested that we should put it on LEGO Ideas. Huwbot's designer Eero Okkonen has done just that and the project has now been approved.

We therefore need you to pledge your support so it has a chance of becoming an official LEGO set! It has 20 supporters already and with your help I am sure it will reach the required 10k in no time!

So, if you'd like your very own Huwbot, head on over to LEGO Ideas, sign in if needed, then click on the big blue Support button at the top right of the page. It's that easy!

Update: We didn't make it to 1000 in 24 hours, but we're almost there in under 30. Please pledge your support if you've not done so already. Thank you!

Here's the project's description:

Brickset.com is a popular LEGO fan website and database of LEGO sets at which members can record their own personal collections. Huwbot lives in the Brickset server and keeps things ticking over: performing background tasks, tidying up the database and selecting the random set of the day.

This model is the winner of the ‘Build Huwbot’ competition hosted by the site last year and is submitted to LEGO ideas with full permission of the site’s owner. He has the colours of the site’s menu bar on his sides, the site’s logo in his head, and large hands to grab the random set of the day.

The site’s readers have suggested that he has a particular liking for LEGO Clikits sets because he seems to pick a lot of them. The original design has a Clikits heart on his chest but as that’s an obsolete part we have used a 1x1 heart tile on the current version instead.

Naughty Huwbot, you can't choose a Ninjago set for random set of the day until 2021!

He features the six colours of the Brickset menu bar on his sides.

And the site's logo in his head.

I think he's had enough of this photo-shoot, it looks like he's scurrying off to find the Clikits...

Help me come to life! Support the project on LEGO Ideas!

Well that was the first fun act of the day! Here is hoping Huwbot will be available for us all officially in the near future!

I’m just hoping it comes with an optional Clikit heart as well as the heart tile! ;)

Slightly off-topic, do you have plans to do any more articles showcasing Lego Ideas projects?

Off to support this now. Gosh, I want this to happen. I would love to own a Huwbot, although it is a shame that he can't have a genuine Clikit piece in his chest, but I'm sure we could track down some on Bricklink.

By in United Kingdom,

Is this something that Lego would realistically make? I mean, it's a great model, but the mascot of a database most Lego fans will never have heard of doesn't really fall within the purview of Lego Ideas, which has stuck to pretty mainstream concepts for the most part.

I'd love it if Huwbot was made into an official set, but I fear we should prepare for disappointment on this one.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Supported - it's over 200 now.

Also love the Brickheadz Minifigure Anatomy which was in my 'recommended' section on Huwbot's page

Gravatar
By in Canada,

@Mister_Jonny even if not well known (though I hope there’s a LOT of LEGO builders who use Brickset), Huwbot can be a great Ideas or Ideas GWP set IMHO. LEGO has created small, cute robot sets before & Huwbot would be a great addition. Heck, maybe Huwbot could also have a Clikits-adjacent colour scheme using the Friends colour palette for when Huwbot visits Friends-land sets. ^_^

Oops, forgot to add supported as well.

I'm also not sure what the appeal would be for people outside Brickset. But, who cares, if half of Brickset's users buys this, that should be a reasonable market :)

Supported! Hope that in case of a release they don’t change anything. The model is perfect as it is. And clickits parts we can get from Bricklink :)

This definitely needs to become an official set. I'd buy several. One for the office, one for at home, plus several for friends.

Let's make this the fastest to reach 10K ever :-)

Since you've published instructions, isn't it the case that the project is now banned from Lego Ideas? I thought that was one of the rules?

EDIT: Sorry, I've found the relevant section, it says:
"You may share photos and building instructions free of charge on your own website and online profiles. However you may not sell building instructions, custom kits, or anything related to your product idea. We will remove product ideas without notice if we learn you are commercializing content submitted to LEGO Ideas."

So looks like you're ok!

I'm 176. I'm for any well-done build that's at a size I can realistically afford and isn't another pop culture set. Technically though, this does fall under an IP (here, Bricket), but at least it isn't an overrated 1990s sitcom that is run constantly on 3-4 different channels. 1990s

Would like to support this but as LEGO cannot integrate its Ideas and user accounts despite insisting on them being the same, I am unable to.

I wonder how many supporters will be lost for this project and others because LEGO is incapable of getting its IT together.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

In the new world of ideas where small sets dont pass you might be better off with a super large huwbot.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Without the context of Brickset, this is just a cute robot, and that's what most people will see when viewing it. LEGO has some awareness of this site, but they've got to know that making a set based on a fansite/database most casual buyers won't know about isn't viable for the market. There's a reason most Ideas sets are either popular licenses, recognizable real-world icons, or replicas of real objects. They're things most people know and enjoy seeing in LEGO. Unless, perhaps, this is a ploy to bring Ideas users to Brickset and the success of the project isn't the goal. There's something a little uncomfortable about Brickset using its users to promote an Ideas vanity project that realistically won't make it through. I like the spotlights of other people's up-and-coming projects, but this feels a little weird.

In all honesty I'm ready for disappointment on this one. If things like Zelda, Bionicle, and Futurama are seen as to niche to make sets out of this doesn't have a shot in the dark, but we can always hope! I bookmarked the instructions article a while pack to eventually part it out on Bricklink, but maybe I can avoid that if this gets through.

If it does get through there's two changes I'd make to the model. First I'd replace the little set boxes with new prints of new sets (maybe Clikits!) to add some extra collection incentive. Second I'd like to see a little minifig-scale version of the guy, I love tiny robots!

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Supported(531). As others have mentioned, biggest risks are the (recently) numerous changes Lego makes to submitted models. This would have to be really close to the original - lots of freedom can be had on the choice of 1x2 random Lego sets of the day! (but one of them must be clickits)

Gravatar
By in Canada,

The best part - if this becomes a set Huwbot can pick itself as the random set of the day

Edit - and maybe more bricks printed as sets

Might I suggest a permanent banner on the homepage linking to the Ideas page? That way in a few days when this is off the front page, visitors to the site can still easily find the link to go support. Maybe even a link in Huwbot's random set of the day articles.

By in Czechia,

EVEN if that gets 10.000 + supporters there are tons of reasons why I think it will NEVER get produced as IDEAS set (may some free bonus on LEGo calender?)

a) Totally biased in the first place - AKA .. Bricket 20+ yrs getting FREE sets from LEGO to review them - and now getting its own "mascot" approved as IDEAS set? .. haha

b) "political" reasons - partly described above.. how do you think that LEGo would be deliberately supporting its "partners" in business (aka Bricket getting for free all of the sets, giving plausible evaulation somewhere around 90 prct.. how would ANYONE feel about Brickset getting its Ideas trophy. ? - totally UNLIKELY

THE RESULT: you should take down your submission as not to question others the stuff above and should rather discuss with TLG the prospects of Huwbot as some GWP polybag which I guess would in be place

but IDEAS set.. ? YOU ARE B-I-A-S-E-D up to the roof!"

Gravatar
By in Germany,

To all those naysayers: this is a much better fit for LEGO Ideas than all those sitcom sets or other IP based stuff. True, Ideas also yielded superb non IP sets like the Tree House, Old Fishing Store, Maze, etc. (and now the Typewriter), but I think if Huwbot got approved it would not mark the end of Ideas as some appear to make it out to be, just because it is linked to a fan site that is also supported by TLG. It's not as if Brickset was the only website that got review sets for free. Even truly obnoxious guys like this MandR or whatever he calls himself get free review sets (God knows why). So just let this fun project roll ahead full steam and if you yourself don't want to support it, so be it, don't, no one is forcing you to.

Gravatar

It seems entirely possible that this could hit 10,000 supporters. I think there's ZERO chance that it will ever be an approved set, but I would get such a kick out of seeing it listed as a finalist for consideration!

Gravatar
By in United States,

How, it would probably help if this article were either pinned or got a daily bump to the top of the feed on the brickset main page.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Why so bitter mate? If you could do better, then why don't you? If they didnt get "all the free sets" you wouldn't have this awesome site to have a big cry on.

Gravatar
By in Australia,

The idea of a toy company producing an official product of the user-made mascot of a fansite for their products is seriously bizarre.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

I support the idea of a set of Huwbot. But I am unsure if LEGO ideas sees it the same. It's a bit of a niche product.

If I'm not mistaken, this model was not designed by Huw/Brickset. It is a fan design who won a Brickset competition. He is benefitting from exposure on this site, and rightfully so since it would appear that the majority actually like the idea. If you follow Lego Ideas, you will have seen that all the winners will have done enormous amounts of marketing/promo to get to 10,000. This is not unique nor biased.

At the end it simplny makes no difference who makes the submission entry - and if you do not belive that - look at the the totally PANIC LEGo reaction a month ago informing and requesting their partners to cut short and immediately cut and stop ALL adverts regarding City Police, Fire, Hospital etc..

NOW.. that was just a month AGO.. LEGO marketing already realized that was a totally bad idea how to approach the situation with the COVID.. and now - you are suggesting that some affilated partner site (aka Brickset) - even through the aka " individuals" submit entry which is really not that hard to fake - would get some substantial reward in exercsing business with the fake identities?

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

I'll pledge my support, but I'm wondering, if this does become a set, if there'll be any sort of conflict of interest or legal repercussion with selling a product representing, and containing the logo of, a RLFM, even if the model designer per se doesn't represent Brickset.

e: I see @LukasM already raised a similar point, but of course I glossed over it because of the large number of comments, and their tone is unsurprising. I understand the commenting guidelines are there for us to avoid making the same point repeatedly and cluttering up the comments, but I tend to ignore it because I feel like I express my views very differently from... the rest. Might be my burnout from other areas of life speaking but I'm not really in the mood for shouting matches and insults.
