Brickset bouts: Quarter final day one results

Posted by ,

Two quarter-final bouts were fought yesterday and I can now reveal the results.

The two contests were, in bold:

  1. 10193 Medieval Market Village vs 10243 Parisian Restaurant
  2. 70620 NINJAGO City vs 79003 An Unexpected Gathering
  3. 21310 Old Fishing Store vs 71043 Hogwarts Castle
  4. 75192 Millennium Falcon vs 21309 NASA Apollo Saturn

Find out which sets have earned a place in the semi-finals after the break...

1:

  • 10193 Medieval Market Village (1981 votes)
  • 10243 Parisian Restaurant (2579 votes)

3:

  • 21310 Old Fishing Store (2556 votes)
  • 71043 Hogwarts Castle (1962 votes)

Both bouts received a similar number of votes, around 4500, and the percentage split of votes was roughly the same, too.

The second pair of bouts will be staged later so make sure you come back and vote!

By in Singapore,

Well I own none of the qualifying sets so, for me, this is really a competition of the best box art and argument.

How many fish died for this result?

By in Australia,

Very happy with both of these results! Surprisingly, not as close as I expected...

By in Hungary,

I still regret l didnt buy the old fishing store, l had too many sets already everwhere. Now the cheapest is 2x price and it will only increase. Fascinating set, one of the best representation of the mission of Ideas.

By in Australia,

Very happy to see the magnificent Parisian Restaurant in the final four.

Hoping that the final is either;

UCS MF/Saturn V v Parisian Restaurant

By in United Kingdom,

As ever, I'm out of step
The old fishing store is a decent enough set but I don't understand the seemingly overwhelming appeal of it

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Disappointed the MMV lost, I mean there are quite a few modulars, but the MMV is something more unique and special, oh well, it'll still be the best set of the millennium to me.

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Ah poor MMV but it was a very difficult bout with the Parisian Restaurant. Happy to see that Old Fishing Store won :)

Gravatar
By in Ireland,

Hogwarts castle rubbish. Good riddance.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

None of the sets I voted won :(

By in United Kingdom,

Wow, 0/2 for me this time around! I'm really surprised by both of these, especially the Parisian Restaurant beating the MMV. The Restaurant is a lovely set, don't get me wrong, but I wouldn't even put it in the top 3 best modulars. I wonder what I'm not seeing that other people are in it. Anyway, this is still fascinating! Can't wait to see what wins.

By in Australia,

It's a long shot but I'm rooting for the Saturn V to win here!

It's up against the UCS Falcon. How could it possibly win? It'll be a tense battle.

I totaly agree, I doubted to long and now it is to expensive for me.

By in United Kingdom,

Not shocked by either of these results; although I voted for Hogwarts, I can see why it doesn't feel as worthy as a minifigure scaled, potentially more fun build

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Hey! 2 out of 2 so far in the quarter finals!

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

The Parisian Restaurant was no surprised and tbh I do expect it to be the overall winner, but I honestly thought Hogwarts Castle would have won over the Old Fishing Store so I'm quite surprised that the Fishing Store won that bout.

Gravatar
By in Singapore,

You can tell most of the users of this board are AFOL in a particular age bracket. The two modulars winning???

I like all 4 of these sets and own them all (and have every modular on display in my house) but I realise most lego fans don’t think this way. If you asked most lego fans what one set from the last 20 years they wanted I doubt it would be either of these modulars.

Wow, the Hogwarts Castle was soundly trounced by the Old Fishing Store. I’m surprised.

Gravatar
By in Puerto Rico,

I am glad that the OFS managed to pull a win agaisnt a much bigger set but I am saddened that the Market Village lost to the Restaurant, should I buy the Restaurant?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I kind of knew the Parisian Restaurant would win given how popular and awesome it is. So happy to see the Old Fishing Store won though, didn't know if it would!

Gravatar
By in Australia,

Awesome to see the best sets won. I can see the ideas sets showing the popularity of the theme. Who will win saturn v or fishing store? Since the treehouse lost I would expect it to be one of these to win.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Both of my votes were for the winners. Let's see if I can keep it up today.

Gravatar
By in Portugal,

Olive green versus sand green...

Gravatar
By in Canada,

Finals will most likely be OFS vs PR. I mean, all the sets have immense detail. But the color schemes of OFS and PR are a little more interesting than that of Sat V or UCS MF.

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Quarter finals are so much easier than the first round. Quite a few times in the first round it was either a really tough choice between two sets I love, or a choice between two sets that were both a bit "meh".

Every bout in this round is a very easy choice for me.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I'm not surprised the Old Fishing Store won, as both of those are fantastic sets and it could have gone either way imo. I AM surprised by just how much it won BY. The margin of victory there was much larger than I thought possible in that round.

Gravatar
By in Canada,

I am also surprised by how much the old fishing store won by. In my eyes, the Old Fishing Store’s creativity and how it is the first Lego set to incorporate MOC aspects made me vote for it. I still remember seeing the final Lego product for the Idea set and being very surprised Lego didn’t simplify it (eg. How they made it play-friendly and kid-friendly for the Treehouse Idea shet)

By in Viet Nam,

The real surprise is in the Medieval Market Village vs Parisian Restaurant matchup, considering how they performed in the previous round.

The facade masqueraded as a castle would have lost to any full building here.

Performance in the previous round is largely irrelevant. They are binary choices, and the performance depends on how closely matched the two sets in that bout are. A different pairing will yield very different results.

Old Fishing Store - Had fun storming the Castle!

But sorry, Roller Coaster still better.

Gravatar
By in France,

Wow Hogwarts got the least votes. While I like old fishing store slightly more than parisian restaurant, I think Hogwarts is even better, but it's mostly because I prefer castles in general, all 3 were worthy of winning. MMV, well back then we already had modulars which were already more impressive? Granted, there are now a dozen modulars, while MMV is unique.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Two unambiguous decisions here. It seems as we advance in the tournament the choices are becoming easier, presumably because people have a better idea of what they think the overall winner should be.

There are several really difficult choices still ahead; even though my personal favorite (Hogwarts Castle) is now out of the running I'll be very interested in how the remaining contests go!

Thanks to all the advocates for their persuasive and entertaining "campaign pitches!"

By in United States,

Medieval Market Village is still tops in my collection.
Would've included the 10223 Kingdoms Joust as a contender in this contest as well.

Gravatar
By in Germany,

Seeing the first two results I can quote Marty from MMM again:
I am happy with that.
I have both of the winners and can attest that they are better by a mile (and more) than the two sets they kicked out of the contest.
Now I only need NC and Saturn V to make it to the semi-finals and I couldn't be happier. Well I could if the Saturn V managed to score the overall victory, but to be honest, among those four anyone would be a worthy winner.

@twentythree: you're right, I completely forgot about 10223. That is an even better Castle set than MMV I think. But kind of forgotten in spite of how awesome it is.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I am downright shocked! Parisian restaurant is a fantastic set, but that fishing store is one of the ugliest sets I’ve ever seen.

But obviously I am in the minority.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Rest in peace Medieval Market Village, your animals where sublime

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Old Fishing Store winning is ridiculous.

Gravatar
By in Serbia,

Soooo...we won't be seeing a castle line anytime soon...if this public opinion battle is of any significance...

I see Howart castle closer to a Harry Potter licensed line than a castle line. I voted for Fishing shop but my biggest hope for Lego is for the castle line to come back.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Again, Huw, I'm REALLY disappointed at the short polling times on these...and ON THE WEEKEND when many people (like myself) might not have been checking regularly. :(

Gravatar
By in United States,

Really didn't expect the result of MMV. Not only didn't expect it lost, but the margin is quite wide as well. Oh well guess people here really like modulars. I like them too but just that PR is not my favorite. Had it be CC or GG made it into top 8 it could have won all the way. On the other hand, glad OFS beats HC. HC shouldn't even have beaten RC in round of 16. Seeing the results, OFS shouldn't be a match for PR. PR would probably end up winning the whole thing.

Gravatar
By in United States,

I voted for the winners of all 8 bouts in round 1 but am 0-2 so far in the quarter finals. I'm not surprised as I figured my favorites would lose.

We're going to end up with 3 32x32 buildings in the final four, aren't we?

Gravatar
By in United States,

Darn, I missed yesterday's votes! :( I would have voted for Medieval Market Village and Hogwarts Castle. You should have let these polls run for more than a day, especially since you're doing it on the weekend when a lot of people have stuff going on.

Gravatar
By in United States,

These were the two I voted for, but wasn’t actually expecting them to win.
Now I hope the Millennium Falcon and Ninjago City make it to the finals.

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

I don’t get the hate that Hogwarts Castle is receiving here... it’s a magnificent set with tons of little details, great building techniques, wonderful parts and it looks stunning on display! I own the fishing store, but I currently don’t have it on display, cause I think it doesn’t really fit in with a lineup like the modulars and I think it’s not beautiful enough as a display piece by itself. (Don’t get me wrong, I really like the set, but I feel like it’s overhyped)

Voting for the other set doesn't mean one hates Hogwarts Castle.

This is a competition for the best set since 2000, and that means one has to use objective criteria. HC is a bigger set, it is also a very good set, but it is by no means better than the OFS. No matter how much HP fanboys might want to make you believe. It's just the same as with AUG or MMV. Both good sets, but far from standout when one is trying to be objective. It has to be the "entire package".

By in United Kingdom,

I've been building for 30 years and the Fishing Store is my favourite lego set, not just since 2000, but of all the sets I've owned.
