Review: 40357 BYGGLEK

In addition to the storage boxes we reviewed on Monday, a box of LEGO bricks is also going to be sold in IKEA stores from 1st October.

40357 BYGGLEK contains around 200 pieces and is designed to encourage creative play with the boxes.

Like regular Classic sets, this one does not build anything in particular so the box gives an indication of the parts inside and inspirational pictures showing that can be done with them.

Parts, including a brick separator, are packed in four bags and a leaflet showing further building ideas is included.

The reverse shows how they can be used in conjunction with the storage boxes.

Minifigures

The box contains two minifigures which both have classic smiley heads and torsos devoid of printing, which is something of a rarity nowadays.

A selection of headgear is provided which can be added to the androgynous figures as you please.

A LEGO set sold in IKEA would not be complete without a hot dog, right?

The most interesting piece in the set is this combined hair/cap piece, which I think is this one.

An inventory is not yet available so here's what's in the box. A good random selection!

Verdict

It would not be right for the storage boxes to be sold in IKEA without an accompanying set of bricks to put in them and use them with, so this fulfils that need.

There's nothing in it that makes it a required purchase for most AFOLs so its appeal is going to be its uniqueness and collectability. I suspect that buying one and keeping it MISB will suffice for most.

However, for kids, it's a different story. If these are their first bricks there's enough here to kick-start story-telling and creative play, particularly when used in conjunction with the boxes, whose lids provide an easy way to get started with building.

The set will be available in IKEA stores from 1st October, priced at £15 / $15.

If you want to see what can be done with the boxes in expert hands, check out this by Jonas Kramm:

LEGO x IKEA refrigerator The two big Scandinavian companies are actually doing a corporation, which didn't get officially announced yet, but accidentally already got sold in a German IKEA. Lukas from @stonewarsde already got his hands on the white storage boxes with studs on the lid and challenged me to come up with a creative use. Colour and shape were to perfect to not use it as a fridge, so we spend an evening trying out different ways to build the interior and filling it with some tasty food. Really looking forward to see what other creative minds will make with these containers. Thanks to LEGO for providing the set for review. All opinions expressed are my own.

By in Sweden,

Even though there's no special parts included, I still want this set for the nostalgia it's providing
Also get 50 yr anniversary Classic vibes from it

By in Turkey,

I'm not overly fond of two-wide doors but I like the window selections. Also, plain figures are fine by me.

That fridge MOC is amazing. Thanks for adding it to your review. Now I have to buy the set and boxes.

It's a nice, if remarkably unremarkable set of bricks.

I hoped it might include something unique to IKEA, such as a dual-moulded, yellow-blue brick separator...

By in Singapore,

This makes me so happy. PPP could be better (again, Classic sets have inexplicably been getting higher PPPs each year), but I'm definitely getting at least one of these to start, and I might consider getting more to part out!

Something really timeless about this little set (and it’s not often you find the classic smiley nowadays).

That refrigerator is incredible. People are too cleaver.

By in Latvia,

This is a good parts pack for me, especially those windows and doors

Great review. For me it evokes memories of my sister and me, sitting down with our tub of LEGO circa 1980 building our small town.. would've loved these boxes then.

By in Russian Federation,

At this point I'm willing to pay extra just to not have brick separators included in sets.

I just love the look of those - no waistlines, no beard, no lipstick, no moustache, no eyelashes - just classic minifigs that can represent anyone, now that's pure Lego.

By in Australia,

I love that there’s a brick separator in there! I’ve got about 30 identical Allen keys from buying IKEA shelves recently, so it seems natural to expand it to brick separators.

Where are the swedish meatballs?

By in Netherlands,

This would've been a great opportunity to include a brick separator in Ikea Yellow or Ikea Blue (whichever is most like a Lego color).

By in Australia,

As a huge fan of both LEGO and of IKEA I intend to snag this set assuming it makes it to Australia. Not because its got any parts in it I dont already have (it doesn't) but because of how cool it is.

I like the idea of creating a room in the box (which you still need to buy separately) but shame all the furniture will move around when you lift it up? A pity none of the boxes could include say 50-100 bricks with them depending on the size. To reduce costs wouldn't it be easier for Lego just to redesign the junior creator boxes to have lids which could be used as bases? I remember them doing this for duplo once with 5931, 10561.

What does MISB mean, please?

Mint in sealed box; that is, with the box intact and never opened. Similar terms include NISB (new in sealed box) and BNIB (brand new in box).

Thank you. It's easy to forget that not everyone knows all the acronyms we band about!

On a whim I punched "bygglek" into google translate and got "construction game"
huh

By in United States,

He tagged the instagram post with " clonetrooper" but it's a stormtrooper in the image. Surprised no one else pointed this out yet.

Also, if a seller is trying to trick someone into buying used MISB could also stand for "Missing InStructions and Box"

Will this and the boxes be also available at LEGO stores/lego.com?

Gravatar
By in United States,

I don't think there's an IKEA nearby but if there was I'd get this set and prolly one of the mefium boxes...

By in United Kingdom,

A nice little set.
As Huw says I’ll get one to keep MISB just for the sake of it!
Would have been great if there had been at least one unique piece to IKEA.
An IKEA employee torso would have been fantastic!
