A set that's likely to be a gift with purchase with Harry Potter sets worldwide in the near future has been revealed by a Chinese LEGOLAND Discovery Centre store, as reported by Brickfinder.

30628 Monster Book of Monsters comes with a Draco Malfoy minifigure and features an opening and closing mechanism that's operated by wheels underneath. You can see it in action at the link above.

What's bothering me about it most is the set number. 30xxx sets have, until now, all been polybags. This should have been numbered in the 40xxx series, along with other boxed promotional sets destined to be available primarily at LEGO outlets.

By in Australia,

I’d probably put Neville in as the figure, but this is great!

By in Ireland,

Anyone have any idea what European GWP purchase thresholds the Chinese ones match with?

The numbering issue reminds me of the way LEGO Art sets are using the 31xxx scheme that usually represents Creator 3-in-1 sets.

£100

By in Poland,

Curious thing about that sets number. Maybe its 30xxx but in paper box instead of a polubag because lego is pushing recyclable materials for as much as they can in their production?

glad i haven't bought any HP sets yet this year! hope it isn't the HP equivalent of Yoda's lightsaber, and would need to buy Diagon Alley to get it :(

Agreed, with this and the dickens tale set inbound I’m happy to have some “should get that” sets in my wishlist.

Turns out new mindstorms with double vip and small gwp is still more expensive that day one local online price...

By in Serbia,

That poster thingy has a very poorly executed"paint-level" correction of the set number 30628...

By in United Kingdom,

Nice freebie - I think if this was not promotional the stickers would bother me and I’d prefer a more creative solution for the eyes. As it is it’s pretty nice.

Neat.

Dividing the prices by ten should get you a rough approximation. Promo thresholds are generally higher in China (and Asia) than Europe and the US, hence dividing by ten and not eight.

Well, the mosaics are 3-in-1...

By in Netherlands,

I will wait and see what will happen here.

By in United Kingdom,

Maybe it was intended to be a polybag, then the designer made larger model that they all liked but the set number was already assigned. Just a thought.

So cool! Very creative.

I wonder if you can make it like, eat a minifigure

It looks as bad as the Hedwig!

The rule with set numbers is there is no rule ;-)

By in United States,

Is this what my copy of Pop-up Book is gonna look like in a thousand years?

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

Maybe it's a really big polybag, we don't know.

I had no idea China allowed Harry Potter

@TheWackyWookiee:
That's what I thought! I said as much on another site, and was told that no, Draco makes more sense because of the Buckbeak scene. All we ever see Draco do with the book is stroke the spine (but never open it) and then carry his closed copy past Neville when he's getting his clothes shredded by his own copy. But on reconsideration, this is rigged to be pushed around on the floor, which most closely matches the scene where Harry gets trapped on his bed while his copy hides underneath.

@TheRightP_art
No, the Beatles and Marylin are both 4-in-1, and the other two are either 4-in-1 or 6-in-1, depending on whether you define the triptych as a single build using three sets, or three component builds that each use one set.

@Astrobricks:
There actually are some rules. As they shifted from 4-digit to 5-digit set numbers, they openly stated what some of those rules are, like any 10xxx set will be a LEGO Brand Retail exclusive of the D2C variety (as compared to the yellow-box stuff that doesn't get standard set numbers). Different themes were assigned to different ranges, with the unstated promise that if you looked at just a set number, you could tell what theme it was part of. The tricky part is that some of those themes have gone away, others have been added, and some sets just fit into multiple categories (SW Droid Commander is SW, D2C, and Technic, all three of which were assigned different ranges of numbers at the time).

It's not. Huw's doesn't cut off at the top--you can see all of Harry's hair and the blue line above the LEGO logo.

By in United States,

It doesn’t look as great as it could. But this picture looks better than the leak I saw earlier.

I still have a few sets to get, so maybe I’ll pick one up when this is available. But I’m also okay if I miss out on it, if that says anything.

The set picture shows it's a box

By in United Kingdom,

Something original and looks like a fun build, wish I had thought of it! Pity it cannot be purchased directly (as well as promo gift) as that leaves those who already have all this years Harry Potter at the mercy of the secondary market.

Gravatar
By in United States,

It reminds me of a D&D mimic

Gravatar
By in United States,

Kinda makes me wish I still bought Harry Potter sets.

Gravatar
By in United States,

Does anyone know how to get this in the U.S.?

Gravatar
By in Australia,

How do these work once the GWP window ends? Will they end up available in Lego stores?

By in United States,

@Albus:
There are a handful of polybags that have been released as GWPs by LEGO Brand Retail, while being sold as retail sets elsewhere (recently there was a cat polybag, which is currently available through at least one chain in the US). Generally speaking, though, GWPs are only ever available as GWPs. If they don't burn through available stock, they may hold onto them to sub in when they do run out of something else. When I was in line to get the second UCS MF on VIP launch day, the late store manager would periodically bring out any GWP polybags they had sitting around and give one to everyone in line (even those who weren't early enough to nab one of the twelve sets they had in stock). I wouldn't be surprised if they burn through the entire stock for something like this, so either plan to qualify for it normally, or be prepared to buy it on the secondary market.

By in Netherlands,

I just walked out of the Lego Discovery Center in Shanghai and this set is unfortunately not available anymore. In the shopkeepers words: ‘LEGO has already cancelled this promotion’. All the Book of Monsters were sold out and there are hardly any HP sets left in the store! It looks like this was a successful promotion and the shopkeeper said it might return in the future. No word on worldwide availability yet. So just a heads up if you’re in the Shanghai area: don’t waste your time going to the store if your sole purpose is to get your hands on the Book of Monsters!
