Police Brick Box

Our last user-contributed pick of $25-50 sets comes courtesy of FoolECK who's chosen a set that I am sure many of us have overlooked:

Today I want highlight probably one of the most overlooked sets of 2020 – the littlest police station we’ve seen in quite a while: 60270 Police Brick Box.

LEGO doesn’t hide the fact that sets based on emergency services are extremely popular among kids. In an alternate schedule, every 2-3 years we get a completely new line-up of either police or fire services. At any given year, there’s plenty to choose from both of these two divisions.

Year 2020 brought us yet another completely new wave of police sets. Suffice to say I find the design of them a bit lacking. I’m fully aware I’m not a person of interest here and maybe kids love them – that’s all right! But this little set shows its big brothers how to look good with a modest number of parts.

The approach is simple – it’s a small police station with two police vehicles (a car and a bike) chasing an ATM robber getting away in “his own” tow truck. It’s not about the size, it’s about the execution. Both cars are great – they have this old-time look to them, with round headlights. Bike is just a bike, but the station has everything it needs – a reception at the entrance, a watchtower on top and a jail cell for the bad guy.

Here comes the fun part. When I compare this set to its big brother (60246 Police Station) I see almost the same things (albeit smaller) for 2,5x lower price. Both of them have 3 vehicles: 2 cars and 1 bike. Both stations share similar layout and functionality. Sure, the big station has more figures, a drone and a light brick. But between those two – I’d still choose the smaller set which to me just looks better overall providing similar play value.

It’s important to fulfil your kids’ wishes. However, if you’re on a tight budget and your child desperately wants a police station – this is the way.

Ah... that makes sense. For some crazy reason, I was told to go the other way!

By in Hungary,

I agree, this set has everything, and you could build the separate sections simoultanously with your child/siblings.

By in Australia,

Bought this a while back (I collect police stations) and love it. Its got a decent mix of parts and I really like the design of the police car.

Plus the box is very useful for sorting (e.g. you can flip the lid upside-down and use the inside of the 6 studs to hold 6 different categories of parts)

I want more of these boxes please (a red one with fire station bits would be great :)

By in United States,

Would it be too obnoxious of me to say that this is better than this year's full-scale police station? The build feels more uniform, there are almost as many vehicles, and there's at least one alternate build. I don't know, get the one you prefer.

By in Singapore,

This is a great police station for its size, but the 2-in-1-ness and the blue bucket do drive up the price more than the part count would otherwise warrant IMO. Get it on discount if you can — being a City set, it shouldn't be too hard to find for 20% or even 30% off; see @Isabella_and_Lego_Liker's comment for example.

Hadn't even considered this set until I read this... now picked one up in Asda for £20 in the UK!
