The first 2021 Technic set has been revealed! Here's the press release:
42123 McLaren Senna GTR, 830 pieces
49,99€ / $49,99 / £44.99 / AU$89.99 / CA$69.99
Available from 1st January 2021
Today, an exciting new addition sped onto the track and supercar scene. Extreme to the core like its iconic real-life counterpart, the new LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR provides the ultimate thrill for sports car lovers and motorsport fans alike looking for their next building challenge.
Combining the McLaren’s unrivalled power and sophistication with the LEGO Group’s design precision, the 830-piece model of this track focused supercar icon makes no compromises when it comes to engineering or style. The model is the first McLaren supercar to be recreated in LEGO Technic form and is designed to provide the ultimate building thrill for those ages 10 and above.
The McLaren Senna GTR is a car unlike any other and this awesome replica is packed with authentic features and design details that make it equally impressive.
From the V8 engine with moving pistons, beautiful aerodynamic curves, opening dihedral doors and a one-of-a-kind blue paint job, this 32cm (12 inch) long model is sure to raise eyebrows and get hearts pumping whether being taken out for a spin or put admiringly on display once built.
The LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR will be available globally from January 1 2021 from LEGO.com, LEGO stores and other retailers globally, and McLaren’s worldwide retailer network, with a price of 49,99€/$49,99 USD/£44.99 GBP/$89.99 AUD/ 69.99 CAD.
“Recreating a car that is so extreme to the core as the McLaren Senna GTR with LEGO Technic gave us an incredibly interesting challenge” says Uwe Wabra, Senior Designer, LEGO Technic. “This track car is not like any road car I’ve worked on before. It’s got some unique details, like its silhouettes and the awesome rear spoiler, which differentiates the building experience from others. Just like the incredible engineers at McLaren do when designing their supercars, we really pushed things to the max so the resulting model perfectly honours the art form that is the McLaren Senna GTR.”
Robert Melville, Design Director McLaren Automotive, comments: “The team responsible for the design of the McLaren Senna GTR worked incredibly closely with their design counterparts at the LEGO Group to capture the extreme looks, excitement and essence of such an incredible supercar for LEGO Technic builders. Just like the real thing, the LEGO model is packed full of incredible details from the rear spoiler to the moving pistons in the V8 engine to the dihedral doors meaning that we’re as proud of the model as we are of the real car.”
The LEGO Technic McLaren Senna GTR is the latest model to be released as part of the long-standing partnership with McLaren Automotive that started in 2015, following McLaren Senna LEGO Speed Champions set launched in 2019. LEGO builders of all ages have so far been able to create such iconic supercars as the McLaren P1, the 720S in 2017 and the McLaren Senna in 2019.The two brands are united by a drive for engineering excellence, pioneering design that makes models like this so fun to build individually or as a family.

Finally we get a new color for that mudguard panel, but unfortunately, with printed patterns : ( A small surprise is that the air intake at the top seems to be a new panel part.
Refreshing to see a technic car at a much lower price point that still does a good job of representing its real world counterpart. Worth considering (coming from a non-technic buyer)
Really nice US price and color scheme, but the build isn’t very interesting. It’s a good pickup if you like what you see though.

I agree. I absolutely love technic sets, and would buy them more often if they made more like this. Usually the only ones in my price range are the dinky little, one function, ten dollar ones, that are designed more to get kids into technic; and the ones I actually want are you around two to three hundred dollars (or got canceled cuz LEGO broke their military policy). I hope to see more good technic sets in the fifty dollar range in the future.
Looked brilliant on side view, less so at other angles. Agree about lower price point being welcome though especially if this is your thing.
Is it April 1st? Must be, no way that's the UK price for that set.
Although, maybe the image makes it look larger than it is
I have a McLaren obsessed young teen who feels he is growing out of Lego...maybe this can help draw him back in...a 'maybe' for his bday list, I reckon...
By the way, when is Lego gonna bring out the McLaren/Star Wars mashup set with two 'Lando' figures? ; )
hahah, Finally a set where the Blue technic PINs don't look horrible :)
Looks like in the same size as 42093 Corvette ZR1 Not really of interest to me.
I like it! It looks cool, compares favourably with the real car, and has a good price.
Interesting that such a small set gets this big press release and so many promo photos. It’s pretty nice though, I’m not complaining!

Why do hate Lego grey and black pins so much?"
Lego doesn't hate the grey and black pins (and axles). They just place an easy build experience over the looks of the model. Apparently it's too difficult for too many people to measure the length of an axle or to seprate/ find different types of pins when they're all black.
I'm hoping this will fit 42098 Car Transporter like the 42093 Corvette does. In that case I'm definitely getting it.
I was hoping to see the set come out as one of the big technic sets such as the Bugatti and the lambo but still a nice little set
First time I actually want a technic car hmmm
This will hopefully go perfectly with the 42093 Corvette. I really like the style of this set and will definitely will be getting it eventually.
For some photos, they took the steering knob off.
I love the look of the technic cars but cant afford the big ones so this will be nice to get. I have the 42093 Corvette and i think this will look awesome next to it.
Just in time. I need a gift for a McLaren super fan. And it's a good price point for a gift.
I think it's fantastic that we can get 'real' cars at this scale. Just like the Corvette, it's nice to have something like this that isn't $200+. And I really like the look of the blue and black! I'm probably going to forgo the stickers and just keep the clean look
If it is a similar size as the 42093 Corvette, as seems to be the case, it should be an awesome companion to convert to RC and race them together. The Corvette adapts well & easily, it's a great little RC car. I personally would love to see more of this class of car set. If only LEGO would release the blue car in the 42098 Car Transporter set as a standalone model!
Glad to see LEGO is beginning to have a bit of a reality check with set size. At $50, it is something I can reasonably afford; unlike the $200 or so monsters we've been getting.
While it's not heavy machinery, for sure, it will be finding a place on my shelf.
I am not sure about the detailing around the grey bonnet and use of 3 hole beams; larger panels would have looked better while still leaving space for the air ducts. If they had used blue throughout rather than grey it would not be so noticeable. Similarly, the engine in the back seat, will take some getting used to but this will be the first part to go in the motorised mocs, which as fairly light should go quite fast.
It looks like a lot better representation of the real car than the Technic Corvette did
Price is € 54,99 in the Netherlands and available as of Dec. 26th 2020
Lots of stickers.
Almost every panel and half of the beams are covered with a sticker.
Too much for me unless it fits on the 42098 Car Transporter.
Overall a good model, but they did miss on the wheel rims.

That'll be a 2022 thing most likely as the Ultimate Supercar sets are usually reserved, by our expectations anyway, to be released every two years. The Porsche 911 GT3 RS was 2016, the Bugatti Chiron was 2018 and the Lamborghini Sian was 2020, so with this pattern in mind, 2022 is likely unless Lego decides to buck the trend....."
There is rumoured to be a Ferrari being released the same time as this set in the same scale as the Porsche 911 RSR.
Interestingly, the model has different axle colors on the rear wheels ... No differential?

It will. It's 15 studs wide.
Also on some pictures you can notice HOG steering, an on some others you can't. Does it mean you can change the place for steering? It would be a big + from me.
Oh I really wanted a 1/8 scale Senna
Lovely bunch of stickers and they even glued some ABS to it.
@Brickrandom: My thoughts exactly!
Tail lights made from bars look good here
I must love too much the real one, its smooth and sharp lines and shapes, to enjoy the Lego model. Hard to do justice to so many curves and profiles. I guess I would have more enjoyed a classic system, creator range set, just as they did for the Mustang. Hopefully we'll see an AC Cobra one day...
I do like it overall and its low price compared to others, but it’s not my thing overall.
Ooh, I'll definitely pick this one up. Not super into McLarens or supercars in general but I love the shaping and color scheme here. Not so big on the stickers, but that's a small price to pay. Speaking of price, 830 pieces for $50 is pretty great too.
Oh I would really have loved a Creator Expert version of this car instead… in orange too.
That's a darn nice looking Technic set for $50.
Tiny, tiny wheels wreck this. That side profile comparison to the real thing show how short the wheelbase is, and out of proportion they are.
Senna isn't a pretty car to start with. Hard pass from me.
I think Lego has done a good job here, anyone who doesn't clearly forgets that it IS Lego and not a scale model! Good looking set at a good price but I do reckon the lack of a B-model is a bit of a let down, I think the parts lend themselves to an F1 style racer and much like the Corvette hot rod it would be a nice little bonus!
Now there is something good in my price range.
It's good that it's a small set. Good likeness too considering the size. Corvette didn't look that good.

I used to be able to build Technic sets as a kid back at the time when all axles and pins were black and grey, and I had zero problems with it. The only thing I disliked back then was the insane amount of friction that the black 1x2 pins had, meaning disassemble was a literal pain.
Even my kids can build those old sets without problems, and they have no problem figuring out the correct length of all black axles either, especially as old instructions included measuring scales that clearly showed how long those axles had to be. If people are not even able to do that anymore, I don't think unicorn vomit colour codes will do the trick either.
That's why I hate all current Technic sets and have completely stopped buying sets from my once favorite theme.
Those current colour coded axles and pins are totally unnecessary, just like those oversimplified instruction manuals that I also hate with a vengeance. Take a look at the manual for set 8880 for comparison. No phone book size, and even included a printed manual for the (then still existant) proper and great B-model.
No, Technic has gone down the drain by my book. App controlled features with no included remote or backwards compatibility is just the icing on the cake.
Plus, why another licence for a set that looks just like any generic supercar of the current era? TLG really love to overcharge their customers in order to make licence holders happy, don't they?

Accessibility, my friend.
Not every child or grown-up is fully mentally, visually, or physically able to build every Lego set, so Lego accommodates them by colour-coding the pieces to help make the building process easier.
It helps the designers to allow more people to enjoy the hobby we love so much. I'd hate for disabled kids to be restricted from enjoying Lego as much as the rest of us do.
This colour coding also helps explain why some sets have inexplicable brightly coloured pieces hidden inside them; they will be helping kids to distinguish between front and back of a truck, for example, until more recognisable structures like the cab are being built.

So the majority of buyers has to contend with such sets because TLG think that a minority needs dumbed down everything?
No, absolutely not. The accessibility argument is pure BS.
When I was a kid I had several friends with disabilities, visual, mental as well as coordinative.
Guess what, they had LEGO sets too. And sometimes, how's that for a novel idea, we built sets together. Building together and helping one another can be part of the fun you know.
The problem nowadays is that everything is centered on the lowest common denominator, as if no challenge should remain for anyone anywhere ever. How is that supposed to be a good thing?
Oh and as for the "necessity" for those stupidly coloured pieces inside of every set nowadays, how come they are all hidden away in the end?
So LEGO is saying "here, poor visually impaired person, have a little help while building the innards of your set. But don't forget, once you get to the exterior, you better up your game because no way in hell are we going to help you there, as that would compromise the final look".
In essence, visually impaired people are only allowed to build the inside of the structures. As soon as the exterior shell is to be built, they either have to hand the set to someone else to finish it or suddenly experience miracle healing and lose their impairment.
Just think of Steamboat Willie as a perfect example.
Riiiight.
Disclaimer: by now we of course know the real reason for those silly coloured pieces, as stated by the LEGO designers themselves. Dissatisfying as it may be.
I prefer the Speed Champions version
First car set larger than Speed Champions in a very long time that's going on my "Buy Immediately!" list. Much more handsome than the 'Vette IMO and the fact it fits on the Car Transporter is pure icing on the cake!
Always nice to see these mid sized well designed Technic sets. I will be looking forward to own it :)

Actually - I'm pretty sure this is larger. Not my much (an inch or two longer), but it's been done to a slightly less "squashed" scale, since Lego knows that the Corvette was received pretty poorly.
Not buying it but nice ppp.
