If you're reading the site for the first time in a while, you've missed the news that many of the January 2021 releases have been revealed by a Dutch toy retailer. Here are links to the articles we posted on Friday:

Earlier in the week several other sets were officially unveiled, too:

As always, and unlike at other websites, you don't have to go hunting for information about next year's sets because it's all neatly organised in our database.

That's great, but I don't see that blue lizard set listed there.

By in Sweden,

Some other blogs do however post more than just one image per set.

The new City Sets look nice. It's definitely cool seeing the new Road Plates too, but I feel there's a small problem to them. Comparing to the size of the new Road Plates and the current Road Plates out, the New Ones are smaller in width than the Basics. Current Road Plates are 20 pieces wide while this one's only 16.
It's good for the basic cars but vehicles like the Tow Truck from the 2020 Tuning Workshop and others will not simply fit as they need at least 9 pieces in Width. Easy to fix on your own? Yes.
LEGO is going to have to prepare too for there will be ALOT of Plates and Tiles being ordered. Especially for City Builders like myself.

And my LEGO City's about to elevate with these raised Plates and Tiles.

Bruni looks nice. Hopefully Pascal is next?

However, while I find that it is easier to "go hunting" for upcoming sets here, I also find that it's more likely to be necessary. Other sites are more likely to post everything on the front page, so all that's required is to visit them regularly and scroll down, where a lot of this site is automated behind the scenes or requires clicking through multiple pages to get to the same content. I'm not one who wants to go digging through databases to find everything, particularly of themes that don't interest me, but I regularly find that if I'm presented with images of every set from every theme, I might spot something interesting in a few of the images.

To answer some of the comments above, if you click the link Huw provided to the database, rather than those for the news articles you will see all the currently allocated 2021 sets (not all yet have pics though) including the lizard and a speed champions set. You can also search for that info by using the browse button.

Any news about Hidden Side??? :o

I guess that this is the end :(

But it is a fun theme! Glad to have some sets!

You're not new to the site Dave, so haven't you noticed you just need to click on the big blue Browse button, then on 2021 (or whatever) and it's all there. No need to scroll through articles.

I think the 'errant European retailer' has taken the images down. We might be dealing with an illegal leak.

^ Yes, it looks like it, but nevertheless the rules are that if a LEGO company 'partner' publishes material that they shouldn't then, except in certain circumstances (e.g an external license holder makes a fuss), we are able to republish it.

By in Australia,

I do not like the new raised road plates.

Purely from a price standpoint. Lego sets are already pretty pricey. But now they're adding a giant pile of grey tiles, I mean, is that likely to make City sets cheaper? And if you are seriously building an entire city lay-out with them, I mean, that is going to be a very expensive option.

Plus, how are they going to manage corners? Or are they just going to do a lot of dead-end T-sections?

If you like spoilers, reading the set descriptions in "all neatly organised in our database." linked above tells you a lot. There are quite a few 18+ and Direct to Consumer sets coming out. I'm also really curious about the Lego/K-Pop collaboration...

At first glance I thought that Frozen II set was supposed to be a build of Stitch, and I wondered what on earth had they done to him. :P

@Huw:
No, I'm not new to the site. I even read it for quite a while before registering. However, I also read other sites. Some of those sites, which I'm still going to be reading, will push all of those images across the front page, meaning I'll see them without having to go looking for them. For most of those images, once I've seen them anywhere, there's not much reason to go looking for them a second or third time.

Every site has different strengths and weaknesses. This is one of the few sites that really sees much comment activity (most sites don't even get comments on a lot of their articles), and if I want to get a closer look at a specific set (especially on my iPod), the zoom function is fantastic. But I don't see any point in digging into the set archive for stuff I'm going to automatically see elsewhere.

@Zordboy:
They're not really "roadplates" so much as brickbuilt roads. And my LUG isn't going to want anything to do with them for public displays. We have a display up right now that, while fairly light on roads due to the inclusion of a giant Hogwarts layout at one end, and the Fisher Building of Detroit on the other end, still uses 60 straight roadplates. The curved roadplates also work nicely with curved train tracks, where the new system doesn't appear to have any way to produce radiused curves. Roadplates don't just break into component parts, where the new road system is likely to do just that, and it looks like it's likely to be more expensive than just sticking to roadplates. So, upon finding out about this new road system, my LUG bought a pile of new roadplates, so we have the ability to expand the size and quantity of our layouts.

@Bornin1980something:
Retail partners. Companies like Walmart get piles of digital material to use on their websites when creating listings for these new sets. If they accidentally post the images before they're supposed to, they're generally fair game for sites like this. The exception would be if there's a media embargo because a movie studio has signed an exclusive contract with a major media outlet that gives them first publishing rights for any news related to a particular movie. In those cases, it's out of The LEGO Company's hands, and they have to play by someone else's rules.

@MrBob:
Nope. It's Bruni, the spirit of fire from Frozen II. Ironically, it's both the best part of the movie, and largely pointless to the plot.

By in Singapore,

Oh my god, Friends sets 41444, 41448 and 41449.

And all the new DOTS sets AND GEAR. The star gems on those 1x1 round tiles look to be dual-moulded AND 3D. They also appear to be duplicated in 41934, making them non-exclusive. And what are those cupcake cups in 41926 made of? Even though the cupcakes themselves aren't edible, I can actually see them being used as templates to refer to while you decorate actual edible cupcakes, so you can make changes to the LEGO design before finalizing them on the real thing.

42117 looks like an interesting blend of System/Creator and Technic.

Still curious what the Vidiyo UMG sets will look like and how they will work!

60284 might be the first time a small and cheap construction-related set doesn't jump out at me as something I want right away, but hey, printed road sign! Bricks to actually load and unload!

60285 is why I don't mind sticker decals on car sets, provided they're not as overwhelming as in Speed Champions sets. This car looks so plain without any! But the build is good, something different.

Love the radical wheelchair in 60290, and also just how many participants there are in total.

60291 is... well, it's a 5+ City set. Not a Creator set. Ho hum. But City does need more houses, and if it means simplifying the builds for a younger audience, I guess I'll accept it. But the "road plates" are clearly harming the value of these sets tremendously. 60292 is just about the only one that looks reasonably priced for what you get, road plates included. I suppose this is the price we have to pay for custom roads that don't necessarily adhere to the 32x32 grid. I'm also curious if LEGO is going to rapidly phase out the 32x32 road plates.

But holy crap that 60304... (simulated) solar-powered streetlamps that REALLY GLOW IN THE DARK?! Road crossing speedbumps (are they a thing somewhere in the world? I've never seen these before!)? Xtra-esque scenery included?

My condo complex has speedbumps located throughout, but the roads are all owned by the association rather than the city. Being privately owned means there's no traffic enforcement, so the speedbumps help cut down on that sort of thing.

Also, 60292 appears to include the first legally blind City minifig.

You can now make your streets as wide as you want.

By in Norway,

The road plates are quite interesting as they fit rather well with my current system based on 8x16 tiles, and isn't that bad a deal as these tiles currently costs around e2.50 a piece on Bricklink. The only downside is that they only has slots for connections at the top, while I connect the tiles and buildings with plates at the bottom. I wonder if the signs are prints or stickers - in this case stickers could be useful if they include a sheet with different signs.

We have speedbumps in our apartment complexes too for that reason, just not at crosswalks out in the open streets like this set suggests.

When can we expect the official unveiling of this range?

By in United States,

@MrJay520:
My LUG uses the current roadplates, which have 6-stud margins, but we add 7-stud sidewalks to those for a couple reasons. The main one is that we add trees in 3x3 planters to the sidewalks, and even with 7-stud sidewalks they sometimes end up leaning towards the roads because they're pressed right up against a skyscraper that runs right to the edges of its baseplates. The added bonus is that the sidewalks cover the outside lines, which enables us to convert T-junction into straights, or 4-way intersections into T-junction if we need to balance our mix of roadplates. So that basically leaves us with nine studs per lane (8.5 if you exclude the center line). I've got an 8-wide Routemaster bus, a couple straight trucks that have 6-wide cabs but 8-wide cargo boxes, and minifig-scale Pixar Cars cars of which Lightning McQueen and Holley Shiftwell are both 8-wide (though Holley is usually airborne on our layouts). I can't get away with putting any two of these vehicles side-by-side, but I can squeeze Lightning in next to my 6-wide Mater and it's passable enough not to draw undue attention.

@lordofdragonss:
Eh...sort of. The new road system (which will suck greatly for massive layouts on public display) still has incremental widths. Yes, you can add a few studs here or there, but then you have to accommodate that with the size of your city blocks, or the size of your tables. On a home layout that's rarely going to change, that's totally doable. On a public display, if you add two studs to the width of the road, every time you use a T-junction you have to add the same two studs to the block opposite. Radiused curves are something that's not really feasible with this new system, and they're so perfectly matched to the radius of train track that this means you'd basically have to leave a lot of dead space in the corners of a train layout.

@LegoSonicBoy:
We don't really have crosswalks marked out in our complex, but the speedbumps are generally clustered around intersections, and in the centers of some of the longer blocks, which kinda forces people to slow down at the intersections. That's a good thing, because in the area where I live, the minor intersections (including those in my condo complex) have stop signage that looks like it was designed by a drunkard. Say you have a T-junction with roads heading east-west and south. The sensible thing to do would be to plant a stop sign on the south leg (headed north) and let east-west traffic proceed normally. Here, they drop one on either the east or the west (but rarely both), and let the northbound traffic coming up the south leg proceed turn left or right without stopping, while someone driving in one of the other two directions can proceed straight or turn south, also without stopping. Standard right-of-way rules assume that when any two cars approach an intersection, certain circumstances will indicate who has right-of-way and who has to yield. Cars on a straight path with no stop signs or red lights get priority, then cars turning right, and lastly cars turning left. Two cars approaching from opposite directions can both turn right, or both turn left, at the same time without one having to yield to the other. However, a car driving north and a car driving west cannot simultaneously turn left, but when approaching an intersection where they have no stop sign or red light, both have right-of-way, and the driver's training class I took gave no indication of which would be legally forced to yield the right-of-way to the other driver. So speedbumps help by forcing both drivers to slow down enough that they'll have ample time to notice another car is about to cross their path, and they can basically wait it out until one of them gets sick of waiting for the other driver and proceeds through the intersection.

@Bornin1980something:
Any January 1st releases should be announced by mid-December at the latest, I'd think.

Somehow I'd missed commenting on the Creator 3-in-1 sets. I have no interest in any of them...

... except 31111 Cyber Drone. Nostalgic minifigure, but my personal nostalgia is overwhelmingly struck by the color scheme. Orange, sand blue, greys and black? There's no way this isn't a call back to 4508 Titan XP. And this'll be the smallest Creator set this wave, a complete contrast to what was the biggest Designer Set ever.

Definite buy, as someone who owns the Designer Set and still has their MOC of it built after 15 years.
