Site changes

Posted by ,

I've just deployed the last changes I intend to make to the site this year, because we are now in the busiest time of the year and I don't want to cause any unnecessary disruption.

The changes are in response to ideas added to our suggestion box:

  • Random minifig browser. While I was at it I thought I might as well do a random parts browser as well.
  • Minifig listings can now be sorted by date added to the database.
  • Minifig listings now show additional link(s) 'Appears in themes'. This solves the problem of wanting to see just minifigs that appear in Marvel Super Heroes sets, which is not currently possible because BrickLink puts all Super Heroes figures in the same category. I'll explain more after the break.
  • Additional filter added to set listings to show sets that are released, sets that have or do not have images, and which are, or were, available at LEGO.com.

To see all minifigs in Marvel sets, view the Super Heroes minifigure category, find a Marvel one, then click on the link next to Appears in themes, Marvel Super Heroes.

The listing should show every minifigure in every Marvel set (that's been inventoried at BrickLink) including this fellow.

Do please keep supporting and submitting new ideas to the suggestion box so I have plenty to keep me busy in the new year.

By in Poland,

It would be outstanding to have an opportunity to filter out minifigs by 'type of possession'. Some of my minifigures come from sealed/complete sets, but some are loose. They appear mixed, while I would love to see only loose ones in some cases. To be considered :)

@Huw I'd love to see an article about how Brickset gets all of its data from and how. I know that a lot of info comes from Bricklink, but how does Bricklink get its info? How is the minifig numbering system done? Do people at BrickLink just assign minifig numbers (e.g. sw0901) in order and therefore that's how the rest of the world identifies the minifigs? I know that The Lego Group has systems for assigned set numbers, element numbers, and design numbers.

As a data nerd, I'd love more info on how all of this data is gathered and created.

Can Brickset just show me the minifigs my daughter took apart and their inventories so I can put them back together? I have like... 200... to go through.

@JasterMereel42 , I published one a while ago, https://brickset.com/article/10557/where-does-brickset-s-data-come-from (gosh, 6 years ago!) but it looks like it needs updating. A job for the new year!

@Mr_ShinyAndNew , don't worry about it. Let her love and play with them!"

I was still in my Dark Ages 6 years ago. I'll check out that article. Thanks! And a refresher would be welcomed for sure.

@Huw, the "Super Heroes minifigure category"-link seems to be broken, at least for me it is. I've tried it a few times, but I'm either redirected to an obscure and unprotected website or my browser gives me an error message stating the site can't be reached.

Set Filter - Has Image, very handy - I've been creating a quick Query to do just that recently.

If you have the sets marked as owned, try browsing minifigures and select "owned in sets" on the "My collection" drop-down. "LIST" view has a "Parts View at Bricklink" link. From there I select one of the parts and display the minifigures that use that part and rummage around to find parts to match up. This works particularly well if you have multiples of the same part.

I've gone through nearly 1000 minifigures over the last couple of months (just on the weekends), still have several hundred more to get sorted out. Thank you again @Huw for the "Parts View at Bricklink" link, it really has sped up the process.

313 out of 340 minifigures from the Marvel Super Heroes theme, guess you could say I like that theme!

Gravatar
By in Belgium,

Is this also possible for other themes? Like Castle, Ninjago or Jurassic World minifigures from the Juniors theme to show up with minifigures from their respective themes?

That "fellow" happens to be my favorite marvel character ;D

Yes

By in Serbia,

Why does the background behind the like button appear darker grey on some comments since recently?

By in Serbia,

Not sure why it is necessary, but okay. Thanks for the explanation.

I guess what confused me at first was that seeing a grey UI element becoming even greyer makes it feel like a disabled or an already clicked button. Maybe give it some colour?

Is there a way to do the following search in the site, without having to export the background data:

In the parts search area, I would like to pick a theme, and the see all the parts used in the theme in then use different filters to explore. The Mai. One is I Want to see the most used parts for a theme.

Oh, this reminds me of a question about searching I had a few weeks ago; is it possible to search for multiple tags at once? I tried altering the URL to look for multiple tags in minifigures (like historic and female figs, since both categories are quite big and I just wanted to see the cross-section between the two) but the end result would be limited to just one tag. It's possible that I was using the wrong syntax, but I browsed around the help topics and didn't find anything about it.

Anyway, cool to see that more functionality continues to be added to the site!

@xccj Too bad you can use a query only when you search sets.

The way Bricklink lumps all of the DC and Marvel minifigs under a generic Superheroes heading (excluding CMFs, TRU box sets, etc.) has long been a gripe of mine. I tried to get them to split the category several years ago, and they refused because the sets both had similar logos incorporating the word "Superheroes", even though they were listed separately on LEGO.com. Now they're just DC and Marvel, and they're still lumped together under "Superheroes" and still no way to separate out one brand from the other.

@JasterMereel42:
Bricklink uses user-submitted data. Users compile set inventories, determine when a minifig needs a new listing, and so on. Catalog numbers for sets are based on the set number. For minifigs, each theme has an alpha code prefix based on the name of the theme, and minifigs are assigned a numeric suffix based on the order in which they're submitted. If you look up the Cantina minifigs, the repeated minifigs range from SW0532 (Chewbacca) to SW1085 (R2-D2), and the minifigs that were exclusive to the Cantina are sequential from SW1124 to SW1132 with no gaps. SW1133 and SW1134 are snowmen from older SW Advent Calendars that apparently weren't cataloged as minifigs at the time. Numbers higher than SW1134 haven't been assigned yet. There have been times when someone has assigned a number out of sequence for whatever reason, but I'm not sure they allow that for minifigs (otherwise I would have expected SW1138 to be claimed a long time ago). As for how Brickset gets its data, Huw writes a lot of code, and pulls it from other sites. I once reported that a set inventory included the wrong part, and I was told that if it's wrong on the LEGO site, he can't change it on this site.

@Huw:
Ah, I'd wondered what happened to the darkened backgrounds on the comments. I think there were some complaints about it making them hard to read. That's not a problem anymore, but the Like box doesn't really stand out if it's just a different shade of grey. Not unless you're actively looking for it, at least. Can you shift it to another color, like red? Not primary red, of course, but the shade of red used to indicate your own posts when you're logged in might work.

By in United States,

@purpledave and @huw. I like the shading on the likes as it is. The most liked ones really stand out when scrolling down!

By in United States,

Tried out the Random minifig browser and it's a great feature. But it seems that minifigs found in books aren't showing the books they're from. For example, sw0889 is found in 2 "sets," but only 75199 is displayed; the book isn't listed. Same for sw0760, which is only found in books (4 of them!); BrickSet says it's in 4 "sets" but after clicking that link, the next page says "no sets found."

Gravatar
By in United Kingdom,

sw0760 appears in 4 books that we do not have listed:

82300367700716-1, b16sw08-1, b16sw08pl-1, b16sw12-1

because they are kids comic/story books. It should therefore say in 0 sets so I'll get that corrected.
