Friends Advent Calendar - Day 3

Posted by ,

I'm not sure what it says about yesterday's calendar build that most of the interest was in the pen piece, which may not be well known outside of Friends sets, since it's been exclusively found there. I misidentified it as a lipstick, which is a piece that I'm used to seeing in Friends sets and it's been used in a variety of colours.

Anyway, back to the matter at hand, which is Day 3 of the calendar. Maybe we'll have something more in the holiday spirit!

Well, colour me pleasantly surprised! At 21 pieces (including spares) this is something I expect from the City calendar, and I'm happy to see it here. This is a lovely little hearth. There are several festive touches, from the greenery with holly berry on top of the hearth, to the stocking hung with care, to the cozy fire using the new(ish) flame piece. All in all, a nice advent calendar build.

There's even a purple piece for no discernible reason, other than I think we're still building out details from Emma's bedroom, and purple is her colour.

I still think there's a county by-law in Heartlake City that demands all buildings and other structures have to be at least 50% purple.

"But Mr Mayor, sir, we spent fifty million dollars on this new hospital! We can't just knock it down! What about a new coat of paint?"
"No! It'll still be yellow underneath! Demolish it and start again!"

Emma huddles under an archway of the Colosseum, using fire for warmth and to dry out her wet socks.

It's right after the by-law that all buildings must use the 1x1 flower plate.

Are the Friends kids? I've never quite been sure; they seem like it? But then they also drive cars and other vehicles in various sets. Which leaves me very confused how old they're supposed to be xD

You know, that's always bothered me as well.

Just how old are the girls?

They go to school and do kids-esque things, yet they're also driving cars unsupervised and piloting helicopters in tropical rainforests around erupting volcanos.

Poor parenting, maybe?

I think that they are late teens.

That's what I think as well, given that they have all come with vehicles at some point and have jobs of their own.

By in Hungary,

I didn't know what a hearth is. It turned out it is a fireplace. :)

@worriz107:
Maybe if they didn't all have their ankles tied together, there would be so many face-plant injuries. Plastic surgeons must make a fortune in that town...

@BionicleJedi:
Teens. Anorexic teens. I believe they've all had a "Someone's House" set that includes parents, but the funny thing is, all the boyfriend material in town seem to have afterschool jobs but still ride scooters. Evidently these five girls come from the silver spoons crowd.

@Yooha:
Historically, it's a bit more complicated than that. Some homes were large enough to require more than one source of heat, but only one of them would really be considered a "hearth". In medieval times, it was just a low firepit in the center of the room, with a hole in the ceiling above it to let the smoke out. Later on, chimneys were added to handle that, and they moved to the side of the building in most cases (the Old Faithful Lodge in Yellowstone has a gigantic four-sided fireplace in the center of the lobby). But what really differentiated a hearth from a fireplace was that you cooked food at the hearth, where a fireplace was just for additional heating.

These days, the line is a little blurry because nobody really uses them to cook food, unless they're trying for that rustic feel, but a fireplace in the main living space is more likely to be referred to as a hearth, and Christmas stockings would be hung there to keep them all together.
