Friends Advent Calendar - Day 4

Posted by ,

With a positively City advent calendar sized build yesterday of a hearth, my hopes are up that we'll have some more substantial builds as we continue the Friends advent calendar and I can stop whining about the smaller builds compared to the City calendar.

There was some question about the age of the Friends. I've always assumed that they were in high school, not only do they get to drive cars around, there was a high school set a few years ago.

Now, on to door number 4...

Sigh. We're back to classic Friends entries, with a total of four pieces. There's a bed for the hamster, and a pretzel. I included Emma in this picture so she could hold the pretzel so it could be visible.

I'm confused on a couple of levels. First, assuming that we're still in Emma's bedroom - and I can't imagine a hamster being in Santa's workshop or outside - Chico the cat is Emma's pet, not a hamster. This is the first time Emma's been in a set with hamster. Also, why a pretzel? Do hamsters eat pretzels? Maybe it's a snack for Emma? So many questions.

But we do have a purple piece, so all is right with the world. The purple streak continues.

Hey, I'll take a painted and nicely sculpted element like the hamster and a rather useful pretzel over the seemingly random pile of bricks that we saw from City yesterday.

Opened this and was a bit disappointed but I do appreciate the hamster and epic pretzel pieces, wish there was two of each.

Is there an instruction on the back of the box for this complicated build?

No, there's a separate instruction booklet of 250 pages, including the history of pretzels and hamsters and their century-long association, as well as extensive interviews with the designers about the process of creating this UCS hamster bed and pretzel combo. Faszinating read.

This is a pretty terrible calendar.

Did you add pretzels to the mix? I heard this helps.

I fail to see the question here, as it is clear as day that the pretzel is for Emma and the hamster is for Chico.

And regarding the ages, I always assumed the Friends are 8-10 years old and play make-believe when they are depicted driving, working, or going to the jungle to save pandas.

This is starting to sound like one of those wolf/sheep/cabbage situations...

So are you suggesting the hamster has eaten the cat?

It depends on the point of view.
I guess the cat saw it as a good idea.
And the hamster didn't...

Depends on the cat. I got a half-feral juvenile cat when I was young, and she never really settled into normal housecat life. During our time with her, we found countless mice and moles, two baby rabbits, some robins, a cardinal, a headless snake, and a hummingbird. And according to my dad, she had a fox so scared it wouldn't come into the yard.

On the other hand, her firstborn was a wimp. I once saw him playing around with a dead mouse that his mom had given him. He was just weakly batting it around with one paw, claws retracted, like he was being forced to play with it. I'm pretty sure a live hamster would have freaked him out.

I like how the logic problem assumes the sheep won’t wander off, and (more importantly) the wolf won’t jump out of the boat and swim back for the sheep. You can’t just say, “Oh, you can tie them to a tree,” because if that was possible you could just make the wolf swim behind the boat with the cabbage tied to its back, you could tie the wolf and sheep up so they can’t reach the sheep and cabbage, or you could just break the whole problem by pointing out that cabbage tastes nasty and there’s not much of a market for wolves. Not live ones, anyways...

Kind of some extreme highs and lows so far with this calendar. A nice substantial hearth build yesterday and now this disappointing 4 piece entry. I guess the bright side is the pretzel and hamster are nice pieces for other MOCs.

So incredibly disappointed with this calendar. Each member of my family has a different version, so I’m getting to see what I’m missing in real time. Bah, humbug!
