Friends Advent Calendar - Day 17

Posted by ,

We've seen Santa's workshop get well populated with furniture - or at least with tables. There hasn't been any chairs in this calendar, which is probably just as well as the elves don't seem to bend, so they can't sit down. Perhaps we'll start transitioning to the next theme of the calendar soon.

Today's build is the logical progression from yesterday - two wrapped presents. Having presents seems to be a staple of many advent calendars, and these are done in typical Friends colours (including purple).

Unlike City calendars, Friends presents can be opened, and in this case we can see the presents are a pair of glasses and a hair bow. Come to think of it, having those items as presents have been staples in Friends calendars, too....

I like that these presents can be opened, and rather surprised this hasn't been adopted in other calendars.

A hair bow? Thank goodness. I'll bet nobody in Heartlake City owns any of those already ....

Friends has stuff that can fit in these gift boxes and still be used by minidolls. Aside from binoculars, I can’t really think of any single item that minifigs could use that would also fit. So, I expect you’ll continue to see the same two items being eternally regifted by Friends, and everything else will keep getting brickbuilt giftwrap that can’t hold anything.

Guns, handcuffs and binoculars for everyone! Merry Xmas!

@PurpleDave : They could always use 1x1 printed tiles such as cookies.

I, for one, can't get enough of those.

For that matter, you could do like Jack and just give people boxes full of snow.

MeganL, you suggested this type of packaging (for presents) can be used in other calendars. A thermal detonator can fit, but can the smaller Star Wars blaster fit into the box, for example?

Which “smaller blaster”? There’s the Han Solo blaster, but there’s also a less Star Warsy blaster that I think ARC Troopers were equipped with before they finally made Han’s gun.

@PurpleDave: The Han Solo blaster is what I had in mind. Then there's the blaster Jango uses.

There's all sorts of possibilities for City. Maybe for HP they could do a Golden Snitch?

No, I'm talking about the DC-17 blaster, which was part of the ARC Trooper accessory pack (61190). The only minifigs that were equipped with these were a bunch of different ARC Troopers and Cad Bane. The third BF Slave I also came with a pair, but only because Boba Fett used a single piece out of that accessory pack to depict the fold-down viewfinder on his helmet. I don't know that the instructions actually put them to use, but if they did, it was probably to shove them in one of the storage boxes built into the hull of his ship.
