City Advent Calendar - Day 3

Posted by ,

We had a fun minifig with enormous eyebrows yesterday, when we met Duke Detain in his cute teddy bear sweater. Maybe those eyebrows are why he wears sunglasses?

Let's see if Day 3 shows us what Duke will be up to in that holiday sweater...

It appears Duke may be building a model of his workplace, as we have another microscale building here. The printed tile (new to this set) indicates that it's a police station. Assuming that these builds are micro versions of recent City sets, I believe this one to be a representation of the police station in 60270. It's possible that it's 60246, but based on the shape of the building and the two levels of clear pieces I believe 60270 is a better fit.

Again, it's not particularly festive, but I am liking these microbuilds. At 25 pieces total, it's a nice build, and if we continue with microbuilds I think there's going to be a great collection of spare pieces (including that printed tile) by the end of the calendar. Since I'm not that familiar with City, it's fun to go through the database and see some of the sets I missed out on this year.

Echo that its a nice little build and having two printed police badge tiles is cool. Prefer the City set to be more festive/play themed but this seems to be echoing the SW calendar approach with the micro buildings.

That looks absolutely awful and requires familiarity with the subject matter to be appreciated. Compare that to, say, Day 2 of the 2019 Harry Potter calendar. That had a mini Hogwarts express, but even without knowing HP you can still enjoy it as being a cute train. Even quite a few of the Star Wars minis can be identified as fantasy vehicles.

This, meanwhile, is just poor - and not even that good a miniature rendition of the full scale set. This might have sounded good in concept but should have been left in that stage.. The diagonal slant on the grey bricks is also doing my head in.

I've decided to use these posts to build my models each day. My eyesight won't adjust to those tiny little pictures on the calendar. Thanks for such great pictures.

I'd like to see the return of the larger model builds like in calendar 7553. Makes for a more substantial display.

If I can get more models like this I could have a toy village display inside my winter/friends seasonal village.

If you remove the badge and the brick holding it, what remains is both the right shape and color pattern for 60270, with the JiffyPop plate representing the satellite dish array. Or you could use it to give them an upgrade, and get one of the yellow round tiles from 71017-6.

@Golem25:
If you saw it loose, with nothing that associates it with the name Harry Potter, you could probably tell the fans from those who've never read or watched any of the stories. If you know it's part of the HPAC, you'd basically have to have been living on a deserted island for the last few decades to not have at least a passing familiarity with the train.

MeganL - I would have thought that with those eyebrows Duke wouldn't have to wear sunglasses at all lol.

If it wasn't for the police badge it would be impossible to guess what it is. As such I judge this as a failure.
