City Advent Calendar - Day 5
Posted by MeganL,Yesterday we had an excellent yellow dump truck for the build. While not holiday themed, it was a great little build. Will we continue with another microscale build, or get something else today? There's only one way to find out.
We have another minifigure! Another denizen of LEGO City Adventures, Harl Hubbs, the resident handyman, joins the advent calendar fun today. I love the detailed printing on his torso. One of the straps of his dungarees hasn't been buttoned, and that allows us to get a better view of the patch pocket on his shirt and complete with the pencil and pen in the pocket. There's even an ink stain in the pocket where the pen has leaked. This level of detail is great.
That detail extends down to his legs where there is a patch and some markings of indeterminate origin on his trousers - exactly what you would expect of someone in Harl's profession. His toolbelt completes the look well.
There's a double sided head, I rather like the side that shows his tongue sticking out, as in deep concentration on the task at hand. Though since he comes with dynamite as an accessory, I'm a little worried as to what that task is.
The detailed printing continues to the back of the torso, but not on the legs, which is unfortunate. The other expression of Harl's face is a smile, though considering the dynamite, I'm wondering what he's smiling about.

What’s with the dynamite as an accessory to a mechanic in a advent calendar?
Nice minifigure tho.

Surely a stick of dynamite is the exact opposite of what a mechanic should be wielding. Are you sure he isn’t Harl the Demolitions Expert?
Very odd choice of accessory but I like the figure. I think he might get the accessory from Duke Detain earlier in the week, which didn't make a lot of sense for him.
Maybe the next figure will be the thief with some handcuffs so they can do a three way swapsies?
Don’t worry guys, that’s just his oil canister shaped like dynamite. Harl has had quite a few run-ins with Duke Detain and even got stopped through passport control on his way to Heartlake City.

Oh gosh.
Did the mayor of Heartlake City ask him to blow up all the buildings in the city that aren't purple enough?
Come on everyone knows that a dynamite stick is useful for a handyman.

I feel like this 'purple building' joke is about to turn into the 'toilet paper' plotline from the 2011 advent reviews.
A policeman with a wrench, a guy with dynamite. I feel like I have the Die Hard Edition of the City Advent Calendar. Am half expecting Santa to turn out to be Hans Gruber...
Maybe Harl works at a golf course as a groundskeeper and has been tasked with removing a gopher.....
I’m still worried about his dynamite and what he’s going to do with it.
I prefer exclusive minifigures in advent calendars, but his inclusion isn't too bad, given outside of a foil pack magazine promo, this is the cheapest set he's in.
That's not dynamite, it's Christmas candles.
;-)
They're doing Secret Santa, people! Duke Detain is giving Harl a wrench for Christmas. Harl is giving the next guy dynamite. You'll know the circle is complete when someone comes with handcuffs to give to Duke (they probably won't put a gun in a City Advent Calendar).
Or Santa's delivery got mixed up when One of our heroes accidently encountered Santa's sleigh on his way delivering toys to the citizens of Lego City.

This actually makes a lot of sense! I assume the dynamite is for Daisy Kaboom, as that’s kind of her thing.
Harl is such a nice character, and this minifig manages to showcase his adorableness. Was tempted to pick up this advent calendar just for the minifigures honestly. If I can get one on sale after the holidays I might still do that.
Have been getting City Advent Calendars every year since 2014 with my kids, and I think this will be the last one. Previous calendars were mostly festive, mini Xmas builds and scenes. This year apart from the box there’s little Christmassy about it and the kids aren’t interested. I’m sure some will be enjoying this calendar, but for me Lego have got this really wrong, sadly.
I tend to use minifigures and some of the builds from the City calendar to populate my winter village scene. I'm not sure that's going to be possible this year.
Die Hard theme since it is a Christmas movie
I definitely prefer the vehicle and building micro builds in this calendar, but this is a good looking mini figure. I don’t follow the actual LEGO City Adventures, so I will be happy to just integrate these mini figures into other sets I own like modulars or Fairground :)
